Ed Siefker I guess I understand your point, in bad rain I’ve had issue with a poncho as a ground cloth plus it can’t be both. These are nice I think. I plan on using it as part of a bed roll to help with keeping dry while hiking and makes more sense than a single use of a dry bag. Too each their own. I figured the vulcanized canvas would weigh a lot more
Yeah, using it as a drop cloth under your hammock/cot so your feet stay dry in the morning is a simple creature comfort that most people never consider. Always hated crawling out of my sack in the morning on maneuvers and getting wet feet, until I started laying my groundsheet down to keep'em dry. Dan, I laugh every time I watch one of your videos. Keep it up.
Found this material at a Jo-Anns fabric store years ago, made a set of saddlebags for my mountain bike and got enough to make a ground clothe and a tarp, didn't know that it was going to be so useful, glad I decided a long time ago to try it out an use it.
Hi John, what was the fabric / cloth called when you boight it off the bolt? Is it rubberized on one side or is it like oil cloth? I am going to look for it.
I use a piece of tyvek like they use under the siding in home construction. Waterproof and super light. A little noisy until it breaks in and softens up a little. But I've been really happy with it.
Gum blankets have kept me considerably more comfortable than if I had not had them. I re-enact with the 46th VA and spend those weekends sleeping next to the fire with two gum blankets, one to sleep on and one to cover me if it rains keeping my wool blankets dry as I sleep. My haversacks are treated with the traditional tar type coating also. I can also attest to no matter how dry it is when I pull that gum blanket up after the weekend it is wet underneath every time
i dont know how often you check this out, but i just got a gum blanket from you. had some rough spots, with bleed through, which leaked....im wondering if i can use flex seal to repair it?
I can say my rubber gum blanket was my first and is still in way better condition than my tarred one. It has a few holes where my bed roll caught on fire but the holes never got bigger or anything. I can’t say I’d recommend dragging anything with it but if you had to I’m sure it would hold up for a good long wile
The one you show yourself using, seems to be squarish.... the dimensions on your web site (if accurate), appears to be a 1/2 gum blanket, am I missing something?
Ya'll can go to Townsend's RUclips channel and see him waterproof cloth the way that the Pioneers used to do. Once we get moved into the family ranch, I plan to craft one.
Think you'll ever sell the size gum blanket you have? Just wondering, cuz 72" by 34" is kinda too small for me. It would be great to get one that's double that... 72" by 68 to 72"... That would be cool!
I would like to purchase but discrepancy on how big it is ..... 72” x 46” per this video or 72” x 34” per your website? If 72 x 46 ... I would like to purchase. Please advise ...
I received mine in the mail today. I have sent an email to Coalcracker and am hoping to be able to report that Dan has wonderful customer service and will make things right. There are Many spots where the rubber does not cover the canvas at all. Definitely not something I would have knowingly spent $50 plus shipping on. Hopefully a fluke...
If you plan to buy - the one I just received has Many small spots where the rubber does not cover the canvas. Following is my response from Dan. I personally would not have paid $50 for this (grommets are cheap also - "time period"?) Your opinions may differ: Unfortunately, that is just how the blankets are produced. The company in which we source the blankets from primarily makes them for re-enactors and is not concerned with imperfections as the original blankets were similar. Due to this we have description on the website indicating that the blankets may have imperfections/blemishes/etc. Although there are these imperfections on the blankets it would not at all affect stopping moisture going to you while sleeping on it or sitting on it. Dan
The gum blanket got moldy. Does anyone here know how to clean it without damaging it? Can I wash it in the bathtub with a little bleach in the water? Thank you!
Not sure I get the love affair. A modern poncho is much lighter, has grommets and allows you to protect things from rain. Plus it's bigger. The thing he sells is tiny. BTW . . . . a large garbage bag makes a great ground cloth. Sorry. I don't comprendo this unless some people just have more money than brains. But . . . . if you're 100% determined to buy one of these then know that the Civil War reenactor community doesn't like the cheap "painted blankets" coming from overseas. They prefer real rubber. I don't know what the heck this is . . . . but do some homework before opening the wallet.
I have often debated about a gum blanket for a ground cloth. Didn’t realize they weighed so little! Thanks dan
30oz is lightweight?
Ed Siefker yea I mean less than two pounds for its versatility. Heck weighs less than my canvas pants.
Seems a little too versatile. A poncho and woobie would come out roughly the same, and then you have insulation under your lean-to.

I've had my Civil War-style (poncho) gum blanket for 30 years. Still in great shape and ALWAYS between my blankets and the ground!

Do you lay it down as you rise in the morning, or is it down overnight. Curious if it collects moisture at dewpoint, as I expect.
I change socks in the hammock, and my feet go right in my shoes as I stand up. Not a problem.

I like it. Looks like a really solid piece of gear.
Boy this beats five minutes to better bushcraft by 62 seconds. Great job.
used one for 20 years doing historical civil war reenactments. Can't beat a good ground cloth,

is tyvek stranded material, like a tarp?
Throw tyvek in the dryer tumble no heat takes some of the noise out
great idea.

Been there done that! Anything is better than no shelter and being caught out in an awful storm
Thanks for including the weight!
Nice!!! Awesome that you found a source for these! Definitely gonna grab one when I can. Thanks Dan!
Awesome! I have looked for one many times with no good luck. I will be glad to finally get a hold of one.
dang I was hoping you were going to show me how to get that gum out of my couch that my kids stuck to it !
Thanks for the tip! This was new to me, have not seen this before. Love these simpel and rugged traditional gear
Good product, you can use whatever you want, I'll use my gum blanket. May grab another, two is one.
Wow, great history on those, that goes back to the Civil War days. Thanks for sharing. BTW, the price at your shop is very reasonable.
NICE! I’ve been carrying a long gum slicker , this is far smaller to pack and more versatile.
Oil cloth works good with the gum blanket.
Nice great price too I remember these my grandad had one hung in the barn ! Be good brother
Nice bit of kit! Would love one someday. Can probably easily patch the vulcanized rubber. Take care.
Awesome product Dan
They really sound great.
i dont know how often you check this out, but i just got a gum blanket from you. had some rough spots, with bleed through, which leaked....im wondering if i can use flex seal to repair it?
awesome tip again thanks Dan
Very good. Thank you very much
Great video, I'm actually in the process of making my own.
@Wisconsin Woodsman I know, I finally got some liquid rubber the other day from home hardware.
@Wisconsin Woodsman haha
WELSBY ROOTS oh man are you gonna make a vid on that, I love your tutorials they are to the point without leaving out important details.
@@GODSOFTHEGUITARS Thanks, I really appreciate you saying so. Yes I plan on doing a video on it with a little bit of a twist!
WELSBY ROOTS you’re welcome Brother credit is due where credit is earned. I can’t wait to see the vid.
Thanks for sharing !
So do people use gum blankets like a tarp for shelters? Or do you only use it for a drop cloth?
how well does that rubber coating hold up? any issues dragging that rubber side down vs cloth down?

Hey Dan, when's the tutorial on how to make your wool blanket out of the cheap Harbor Freight blankets? It would be awesome to have before fall 👍
How do you clean it?
Would a section of pool liner work the same?
Yeah number 1,000! I finally won a tshirt!
I want to make one using flexseal!
What weight of canvas would you suggest me to use?
The one you show yourself using, seems to be squarish.... the dimensions on your web site (if accurate), appears to be a 1/2 gum blanket, am I missing something?
Nice! I want one!!!!
When will gum blanket be back in stock? Love your vids🖒🖒
Can you treat this with permethrin (o know...I can't speel)?
You can’t be filming this in PA! Half our state is under water! That gum blanket better double as a raft!
I wish I could get this up in Canada and not pay more than the gum blanket itself for shipping!! 😩
Ya'll can go to Townsend's RUclips channel and see him waterproof cloth the way that the Pioneers used to do.

Do these have a strong smell?
Bought one!
No longer in stock, will it be returning or did production fall through?
Vulcanized rubber. Damn, interstellar commerce.
I would like to purchase but discrepancy on how big it is ..... 72” x 46” per this video or 72” x 34” per your website? If 72 x 46 ... I would like to purchase. Please advise ...

Super!!!😃👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Does this blanket have an odor?
What do you think of plash-palatkas? :D
Dan, the search engine on your website is giving me a notification that "no results are found" bo matter which category I choose, even "all shop "
How much do they cost
I made one with flex seal. Works well but has a chemical smell.
Is it 4x6?
His website says roughly 72" x 34"
where did you get yours?
The question is : do you ship to Europe ?
The gum blanket got moldy. Does anyone here know how to clean it without damaging it? Can I wash it in the bathtub with a little bleach in the water? Thank you!

Quit ripping people off. Why don’t you tell us how much u paid, maybe 10 bucks. You had to mark em up that much?
