I always thought the Doug Coughlin character was very interesting in this film. He liked and respected Flanagan because he was an honest, straight forward type guy and he didn't know many people like that. But he was older than him and a veteran bartender so he had to play the mentor role to Flanagan even though he probably should have taken Flanagan's advice more than his own on some things. I think he was jaded after years of bartending and living that lifestyle in Manhattan and sleeping around with many different women over the years. He wanted to go to Jamaica and open up a bar with him but was too proud to admit it because it wasn't his idea he as the mentor and he wanted to just strike it rich overnight somehow. He was too proud and wanted to play the mentor role to Brian. He was also jealous that he taught Flanagan all of his bartending tricks but Flanagan was becoming the star bartender and getting more attention from women than him being the young, good looking hotshot. He stabbed him in the back with Coral. If Coral was a bad person Flanagan would have found out himself soon enough. Doug acted like he was teaching him a lesson and looking out for him when he really did it out of jealousy. I think Doug had been disappointed and stabbed in the back himself many times over the years and had a low opinion of other people.
It was a classic and you think about it. He did the phenomenal top gun then he did the Paul Newman movie shooting pool and then he sorta did like comedy with this movie, but it was a great movie when you walked out of that theater. You were very happy.
don't take advice from a man who cheated on his wife and lost all his money due to thinking he is too cool to put in some effort... that is not an ideal to live up to by any means
As a person behind the bar, this banter is very real when you have your mentor as a guest. You guys banter to create that connection while teaching you a lesson but ultimately, he or she will hype you up with the people drinking! The 50 bucks is a tip!
As someone who despises smokers, I’m so glad that Era is over that was so Completely unfair if you were a non-smoker to smell that nasty shit I don’t take my drink and spill it on your lap. I don’t wanna smell your smoke.
this 3 min scene would be twice as long if people were complaining about straws & drinks being watered down. It is assumed Brian was taking care of them when dialogue pertaining to the bet was not taking place.
This film is LEGENDARY!! Brian Brown was so good at seamless dialogue, and Tom Cruise bounced straight off him . Elizabeth Shue was an absolute BABE. They don’t make films like that anymore !!
I agree I was so lucky to grow up in the 80s. I was 22 years old and I used to go to bars like this on vacation. It was just a legendary and look at the movies they have now Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which is garbage the Joker part two was beyond garbage and this stupid horror movie my goodness gracious we are so lucky to drop up in the 80s
Michael Kane would not have worked. He was 54 years old in 1988 you needed a guy that went overshadow time because Tom was very young here but you needed a character around 38 because Tom’s characters on 24 Michael Caine was mid 50s old how is he gonna talk about chics 😂😂
This is NOT the best film of the 1980s. But the dialogue in it blow most of today's movies right out of the water. How many you can think of a good scene about a couple of guys sit around bullshiting each other?
doug knew he was going win 50 bucks beacause he knew the women was going to string brian along and he not only proved his point but taught brian a leason and made 50 bucks
Funny thing is, in the trailer, there is a scene on the boat where Bryan is confronting Doug for making a move on Jordan, so there may have been scenes where Doug and Jordan actually got used together
He twists the match to strike the lighting surface of the match book, closes the cover on the match book. As he throws the whole match book he strikes the match. The match flares up as it being thrown
As a bartender i left the bar with 5 chicks in San Francisco California once anyone would like to take the challenge im moving to NEW YORK and i need a job!!!!

Dam a lot of rich women in today's bar and rich bars, they are out of my league. Even If I tried to make my move on a rich or poor woman including average looking I still would get turn down because one look AT ME they would turn around and walk out the door. The reason why is because I am below average looking in my own eyes due to having disability and no muscles showing on my body.
Don't think like that. You know what the difference is to a woman between having confidence and pretending to have it? They can't tell. Go get 'em tiger.

Doug Coughlin played by Byran Brown, Great Underrated Aussie actor, it's a shame get more credit like for example another Aussie actor Mel Gibson.
That’s an interesting analysis. Who is Coral, again?

Pretty much how I saw it also. Bryan Brown was good in this.
I love that silent ‘cheers’ as they’re going about taking the piss out of each other, it was authentic, great acting..
