Absolutely loved the video. Its so weird that such an amazing piece of art directly connected to a series with such a rabid fanbase is somehow always a foot note, a fun fact and thats it. I never played Mother 1, but i have listened to this album over and over since i discovered like 15 years ago. It feels like what Mother could have been if it wasnt restricted by the technology of its time, its like the true expression of what was in the teams's head when they were developing the game.
Mother 1 is the best out of the 3 games. I disagree with what you said about Ninten and Ana though. It's true that if you're just looking at the lines of dialogue then it seems like these characters are barely acquainted, but this is a role playing game. The intent is that their relationship grew across all of their adventure you've been roleplaying. Every close call, every time they saved each other with a crucial heal or came to each other's rescue with a critical attack. The game is expecting the challenge of it's gameplay to give you the opportunity to roleplay that these characters have grown inseparably close. Sort of like how you said collecting the melodies creates the feeling that your characters are growing stronger and wiser. I personally don't like the mindset that video games are divided between cutscenes where story happens, and then gameplay is just a fun intermission between them that doesn't have any real bearing on the story. There's a similar issue where I see other people commonly misunderstand Giegue as just a "big bad who randomly shows up at the very end" when the game is set up intentionally so that this is meant to be an "aha!" moment where all of these strangely unrelated mysteries come together to make a grand picture. Examples are the password to "Who has lost his tail?", The forgotten man in magicant being a parallel to the school janitor, hinting that this represents George, the XX symbol representing Maria's chromosomes and showing that Giegue's forces on the mountain are expressly there because of the grave, showing that he genuinely is looking for his "family" despite his primary goal, and also Maria specifically saying that the song stopped his tail from wagging, grimly implying that his visceral reaction is his trauma from accidentally killing the only person who loved him, and gave him emotions he has zero context to understand. Ana's confession is also very important to the ending because it's the reason Ninten rejects Giegue's wish to adopt him because it would mean betraying those grown to love over the course of the journey. My point is that games like this can say a lot by saying a little, and actually hide a deeper tale in-between the lines of a seemingly short script, but when the game is old as heck and archaic to dedicate a focused playthrough to, it's easy to just take everything at face value and rush through it. (especially when a lot of people are just interested in getting to the more popular sequel they're looking forward to.) All of those things can make it so instead of asking "why is this?" like the game wants, players will just say "I guess that's just a thing there for some reason." which I don't think is the intended experience. That's what I think at least lol.
As someone who loves mother 3 and knows almost nothing about mother 1 this video was an absolute treat. Keep up the great content Gourune :) and thank you Donovan for the great editing
Awesome Video! With excellent editing btw~ I love this series, and most of the songs on this album really touch me every listen. So glad to know there are many physical releases I could get my hands on!
time to watch someone talk about some niche thing I have zero interest in normally you'd have to interact with people in real life to get this experience shame I dont have dinner or lunch to eat with this video on

Actually, I think that voice might be Suzuki singing part of the song.
