  • @arimurdul
    @arimurdul 2 года назад +15

    I'll be frank, I would never use such a tower workstation in my work environment unless they are giving free earplugs to prevent ear loss. This workstation will be LOUD as a took off airplane. Prefer liquid cooled tower workstation solutions for a healthier work environment. You should add a B-roll to show how loud is the tower while under load for possible users. Not many are aware of this situation and regrets buying such a system after they hear how loud they work. Mentioning its loudness mostly doesn't resolve unless they hear it ( know it by experience ).
    This system makes sense if it can be converted to be a rack mounted system by adding rack rails on the bottom and top of the case and put it in a server room if user wants to get rid of the noise.
    The PSU inside the workstation is Consumer product from FSP. Its model is 2000 Watt "CANON PRO". It has 80 PLUS 230V EU GOLD Certificate ( Doesn't have an efficiency certificate for 100-115 V usage. ) There is also a "CANON" model which doesn't have any 80 PLUS certificate, so be careful if you want to buy it for a DYI workstation.

      It can be converted to a 4u rack. The supermicro equivalent actually comes in a sq (super quiet) variant, less than 27Db

    To get all the functionality of this tower would require a five u case. In light of that, it makes a lot of sense to use this form factor, especially if it is the only server in the closet.

    • @_TbT_
      @_TbT_ 2 года назад

      This is not meant for the rack, but for standalone. SM has 4,5 HE rack servers for 10 GPUs.

    • @edwardallenthree
      @edwardallenthree 2 года назад

      @@_TbT_ uh huh. I used to set up tower servers all the time when building networks for small businesses, but that was a decade ago, and almost all of these businesses would be better served by cloud infrastructure today (or colocation). I can see, however, where this would be useful. Specifically for design firms of all types, and any firm that needs high bandwidth access to GPUs (e.g. architects). They may have just a telecom rack, but need a high speed storage and rendering solution, and this form factor makes sense.

    • @_TbT_
      @_TbT_ 2 года назад

      @@edwardallenthree This server in particular is NOT at all useful for those clients, as it is loud as hell and with the fans mounted at the PCIe outlets, you cannot even connect monitors to this thing. This is a Machine Learning number cruncher. As such it however should be put in a server room, because it is loud and hot as hell. This could maybe be for very SOHOs, who maybe have an own room, but no server rack.
      Imho, this form factor makes little sense, because people will think they can put it somewhere in the office, while in reality this thing is way too loud for that.

    I think the fact that you can bridge ALL FOUR of the GPU's together is a HUGE PLUS! I wasn't even aware of the bridging capability of those cards and now that I am it makes me wonder about the advantages of bridging all 4 together as one versus bridging 2 and 2

    Modular cables for PSUs was one of the best things they've come up with imho. Cable management is a bi*ch enough as it is. There's nothing worse than having to deal with a ton of cables you're not even using. Seasonic was the 1st company I knew to have done it going back to 2007.

    It looks like you can put 2 triple slot GPUs in slots 1 and 4 and have a one slot gap between them. which is nice if you are saving money and using rtx 3090s. I wonder how airflow would be for those cause it’s designed to blow through them while rtx cards try to suck air in and blow over the card. I feel like it would be fine.

I'm currently using a 500GB 980 PRO Gen4 nvme for my boot drive, a 1TB WD Gen3 nvme for games and apps, and 3 different brands of 3TB 7200rpm 3.5" rust rotators for storage of movies, game iso's, tv shows, music, etc (nothing critical) that were only $30 on amazon/newegg but I have SQUEEZED them into what little space was left in my case - and I can't fit anything else...
    I was PLANNING of just splurging on a huge 10+ TB drive to end this madness of so many drives but there is nowhere to put in my case lol, so I need a better case...

      Because exclusive access / free rental is a perk, and there is a potential for conflict of interest "if I review it poorly, I stop getting free hands on time with insanely expensive hardware"
      One of the most important resources any reviewer has is their audience's trust. It's just worth it to make disclosures proactively, even if they're not strictly necessary.

    • @Adrian-jj4xk
