@@debbieframpton3857 Children either follow in their parents footsteps because that's all they know, or specifically choose to do the exact opposite because they found they disliked that lifestyle. It's more common to follow in the footsteps of parents though, which is actually why poor households with broken families often remain that way over generations. When you don't know how to create healthy relationships, or handle money properly, or even control desires, you just tend to end up in a bad place in life. It generally takes a lot of effort to get out of that rut once you're in it. It's more than just a few short talks to really change ones ideas and lifestyle. So you're right in a way that it is an excuse, but most choose to follow their parents teachings before making their own decisions a lot of the time because we naturally see our parents as good even if we cognitively know they have made a lot of bad choices.
The fact that some end up becoming against religion while being raised in a religious household, or against alcohol when raised by alcoholics, are literal examples of the 2nd common outcome where the child strives to become different from their parents though. And this has both positive and negative applications, because successful people can have kids who decide to be the opposite of their parents and become druggie losers that end up in jail. They want to be different from their parents but don't understand the real cause/effect of everything, nor the struggles their parents went through to get to where they are.

He's an adult and should have fixed this for himself already, sure, but the building blocks for a healthy adulthood are all laid in the first few years of life. Diet and exercise play a massive part in depression and adults who grew up in a household where nutrition and healthy activity wasn't a main focus are so much more likely to be apathetic and background depressed from long-term nutrient deficiency and physical weakness. His plan is to work more but his idea is to do something that involves a lot of sitting. It won't help as much as you'd like. Regular exercise and nutrition, even just a 30 min brisk walk near some trees and a multivitamin, would help this dude so much more than an extra 10 hours of sitting on his ass in a car. He needs an attitude adjustment otherwise the extra money will just disappear in a cloud of smoke like the rest of it.

I found what I want to do by accident. It wasn't what I studied, I just applied for the job based on having some similar, but not exact experience in the field. That was on $33,000 of gross income.
Self-employment tax is 30% of your profit on paper after the mileage deduction, and any bills that you can split across business and personal.
That comes out to just over 5% tax. Depending on how fuel efficient his car is, I would probably put aside 10%.
This year’s mileage deduction is 65.5 cents per mile and you drive a lot of miles for Uber.

I wouldn't say delusions, I don't think it necessarily reaches that level, but anyone with an addiction knows it doesn't just go away. Caleb - watching video after video of yours! Just found you last week. LOVE what you’re doing and how you’re doing it!
You are an incredible force of good! I salute you and really appreciate all you’re doing to help educate so many! I’m so old, that I learned long ago, that if we want anything, we need to sacrifice; take responsibility; be honest; be patient; be committed and realize that all aspects of my finances are 100% mine.
As a result, I now live in my retirement years - happy, grateful and of course, debt free. Additionally I’m deeply grateful to have a sweet wife of 33 years who has always and continues to share these same values. Our life is quite simple (by our choice) in many ways, while also being equally rich and abundant. Being retired and not working is amazing! We each started getting jobs at 12 (part time) and then worked ever since then …at jobs, then in our careers, etc. Retirement is quite remarkable, to say the least.
To all the young people who might read this - I implore you to pay attention to what Caleb says. I hope you will value your integrity and don’t put your self worth (and money) into what you think others want you to buy, have, etc. If you feel drawn to “more, more, more” …. Look deep and ask yourself what you’re trying to prove, to whom, and why.
YOU and YOUR life are worth deep thoughts, patience, energy and healthy decisions - obviously including financial ones. All the best to you!
And thanks again Caleb, for what you’re doing!

Im really grateful for this show and for Joseph. I recently graduated college in june, and went from making 15.50 an hour (min wage in CA) and only part time, to 40hr workweeks, 35.00$ an hour at a new job starting late june. Having only one other time in my life made this much money (and last time it was only for a 2ish months during a one time pandemic thing), I kind of was going wild with my spending, even though I had some debt. It's not "credit one" level bad, and I think within 2-3 paychecks I should have all of my high interest debt paid off (had about 5000$~ all together, down to about 3800ish?). I honestly could have made a much bigger dent, but much like Joseph I really didn't want to sacrifice much. I also have an assortment of mental issues but thanks to relentless throwing hands with my issues + therapy and meds ~they're manageable~.
I wanted to go buy more shiny stuff, like upgrades for my PC and have some eating out fun, but this series in particular has kind of changed my mind(and maybe my life) for the moment. I'm taking a closer look at all my finances and trying to budget 50%needs+anything extra goes to debt / 30% Goes to payoff debt no matter what / 20%(maybe should make it even less idk) fun/PC upgrades/bs that I probably won't need but is hard to resist. Really, this episode made me go and look at how much I was actually losing to interest and I practically shit myself.
I also have some student loans, but they're not horrific, and a car that's only 1.5k away from paid off but with low prepandemic interest.
So thanks Joseph, you've already changed my life. It's really hard to make any changes sometimes, but sometimes it's just what needs to be done.

People who lack financial discipline and end up in tons of debt with excuse after excuse for why they can't get out or better their situations. They'll complain about how hard life is but never take a step forward. They struggle with a myriad of mental illnesses, and so do I. I completely understand and empathize with ending up in situations and not knowing a clear way out. Or knowing the answer but being completely paralyzed by mental illness to do anything. I've got friends who are so convinced that their situation can't improve that trying is a futile response.
I really really hope Joseph finds that wake up call sooner than later. I hope he's able to find friends who can keep him accountable and a mentor figure in his regular life. It hurt to hear that he doesn't have any sort of goals or dreams for his future. I hope he can sit down with a career coach or get some exposure to how many different jobs are out there. I don't understand how being likeable excuses this blatant disregard for personal responsibility. I have seen this character trait allow poor performance to run rampant. I truly feel he's throwing Caleb's care and hard work right back in his face. I have fallen for people like this in the past, and in my experience they are only able to excel in disappointing those who help them. Sorry to be a negative Nelly but it's true. Even the mental health issue which is probably a contributor here...it's still his responsibility to seek help. I know so many who refuse mental help because then they can't use it for an excuse anymore...I'm not sure if that's the case here but it's really tough watching Caleb's concern falling on deaf ears....

My stepson is in a very similar situation. He is 20 years old with an excellent first “real” job making $45-50k/year…and he’s dead broke within a week of payday every time. He refuses to take advice from anyway, period. Most of the money goes to fast food 3-4x a week and his weight has ballooned. We’re terrified for him but he’s an adult and basically tells us to eff off.

Hi Caleb, I love the content! It's wicked motivational for me to continue working on my own personal finances, and financial planning for retirement etc! That being said, one huge suggestion is to either link to previous videos when you have return guests, or use the card that can appear on the video itself to assist in finding the videos! Since many of the videos are similarly titled without much detail it is hard to find the previous interviews (unless this is a tactic to get people to search through your channel, in which case carry on >:) )

    Honestly he's come on alot.
Remember the insane interest on that laptop?!
Yeah, honestly I feel him working less on his main income job, and doing the gig work progressively more is going to be better for this guy, he's obviously got the option to work less days, as he has been doing that.
And he says he aspires to work flexible when he feels the need or has the motivation.
Definitely needs to work on his mental health.
    I wish him the best.

I still like this precious young man. I am married to a recovering addict: he's literally and addict of anything and everything. Listen to Mama Cherie: you've GOT to go to meetings! A therapist is one step, yes, because your mental health is definitely a factor of your addictive behavior, but it's the addiction that will end up killing you in the end. It doesn't matter that it's "just" a sex addiction. Active addiction only ends in 1 of 3 places: rehab, jail, or death. And not addressing your addictions with the people and programs that have literally helped millions and millions of men AND women is the same thing as finding out you have diabetes, knowing there's treatment, and not using it. Addiction is a disease, in and of itself, almost always born out of mental health issues and/or trauma. It's a coping mechanism that turns into its own disease, and there's no healthy coping mechanism to deal with--or distract you from--your addictions.
You are a lovely young man with a bright future. You obviously have a very sweet heart, and you definitely love your mother (which is always the best quality a young man can have, in my opinion). You deserve to be happy and healthy, and you know exactly what its going to take to get there. I know there is a lot of shame involved with sex/porn addiction, and is still the most difficult thing for my husband to talk about openly. But, I promise you, you're NOT alone, and admitting you have a problem and NEED help with it doesn't make you a bad person. It's okay, my dear. You are still so loveable, I think we all just wish you would love yourself enough to take the help you need.
Okay, I'll get off my soapbox. I hope I hear wonderful updates about you! I'm going through Caleb's Follow-up playlist chronologically, so I suppose I'll find out!
PS...tell your mom I said hello, and that I think she was/is a great mom. She raised a very sweet and thoughtful boy! ❤

I doubt Joseph is going to read this, but you should get checked out for ADHD. I've watched all 3 videos and have empathised with all the issues you have. My finances would probably be in identically dire straits if not for my husband who deals with all of our money and budgets for us. The executive disfunction, the communication style, masturbation/porn addiction, overindulgence in food, no follow through, the all-or-nothing thinking, poor impulse control, lack of attention to detail, untidiness, losing or forgetting stuff - these are all things I've struggled with my entire life. The only things that are (seemingly) missing from your description are tardiness and an alcohol/drug addiction.
I got diagnosed last year at 29. Been on ritalin for the last 5months, never looked back. It's not magic, still takes self control but life is easier with it. There is hope for you yet, stay strong xx

    • @wmluna381
      @wmluna381 6 месяцев назад

I got diagnosed in my early 40's (inattentive type). I was one of those that actually thought ADHD was pure eye-rolly laziness/fakery/excuses. I trudged along in life, but once I got to the point when I had 2 young children (had them at a late age) in elementary and preschool, my life hella imploded. There was a perfect storm of way too many dishes to spin and I was self-medicating/alleviating the high stress levels with alcohol. I used to only drink recreationally, but my recycle bin started becoming ridiculous after awhile. 😬
You are right, medication is not a cure all, but it definitely helps. Several months into my meds I barely ever drank (Vyvanse, kinda slow release Adderall). However, to me, comprehensive treatment has to be in combination with talk therapy, some CBT, and implementing some core systems, with or without meds. Those who are newly diagnosed should realize it could also take some time for all of those modalities to sync up productively.
I'm at the ~5 year point since diagnosis and have had 2 long periods without medication within that time. I am in the middle of one of those periods right now. Having that off and on experience has forced me to put hard attention on certain personal defecits and stressors and not default to consuming alcohol. However, I still have the problem of switching off and dropping a thing like a screaming hot potato even after much initial effort has been put into said thing.
Over that period of time though I have figured out and made some life big changes that are just better for me. A big one was not working a 1st shift job if at all possible. Mornings have NEVER been my friend. I also have trouble sleeping as it is with this condition. I switched up to a combo of 2nd and 3rd shift work since last summer and that has worked out WAY, WAY better for me (an extra bonus are the shift differentials). Man, I have never been more on time in my life! It's like a miracle. 😄
Another realized adjustment is knowing my limits and not doing/committing to too much. Essentially being more selfish, meeting my needs 1st, and saying NO (thanks for asking though or that doesn't really work for me/my schedule/my budget *big smile* followed with a palpable stare, silence a/or walking away). It's liberating.
I am itching to get back on meds as there are a couple of very important looming deadlines and goals on the horizon that I feel require the "focus and consistency assist". This is for a higher level pay job change that 2 people who do that job said I'd be good at and a tied-in personal finance ramp up.
All that to say, to give yourself time to sort things out after the initial diagnosis (grief) and medication start period.

It's EXTREMELY rare to just "not be an addict anymore," you're forever an addict in 99.9% of cases. Just because you stop using doesn't make you not an addict anymore. You're still an addict because you can't use safely. That means you ought to secure help, treatment, a support system to maintain being clean. You never have to use again, but it doesn't happen by magic and you probably need to put in the work.
