Because of videos like yours, I've decided to start restoring a 1992 XV1100 that was neglected. No idea what I'm doing, but your videos are encouraging.
You just saved me $80 man, I was about to buy those crappy gauges against my better judgement and I’m glad I saw this first. Didn’t wanna do it the old school way but it is what it is lol
Loved it! Learnt a lot from this build. Thank u for doing this! (I like how u don’t edit out your mistakes like with the plastic bottles, helps us from not making the same, thx)
Very good info! Enjoyed your craftsmanship AND the fact that you are one of the decent YT guys with no curse / swearing words! My CX500 Cafe Racer project is 80% done! Please include a video of the Colortune!!
Just got sent over from classic octane. Glad he recommended love the videos. Also love watching an Australian channel and bot having to google every product reference 😃
Love that bike man. I am fairly sure if you block off half the air filters your manifold vacuum pressure will rise. My brother built one like that too.
Had this same experience making one of these, tried using plastic bottles and they caved in right away. I ended up using 2 wine bottles which worked great since you can put a pretty good amount of water in them. glad you think they are accurate as I don t have the actual kit to compare to and was considering buying one just to see.
Top tip Dan! I have nearly finished my project and I need to sync the carbs after their rebuild. I was dreading having to buy gauges or worse, taking it for someone else to do. Now I will be making my own balancing kit 😊😊😊 Thanks for another great video. I used to have a colour tune years ago that I used on my old Triumph cars in the 70’s (yes, I am getting on) it was a great tool, glad that they are still around.
Some one has already posted this but, you can also take off the air filters and use a tub to listen to the air entering theough the mouth of the crabs. Not the best but is quick and will get you close!
Dan. I have followed this bike from the beginning with you and I can say you have done an absolutely great job with it. Here in Ohio we are just coming out of Winter. So the bikes will need to be dusted off and tuned up. Thanks for the videos. Looking forward to your next budget build.
I'll be making the bottle gauge to tune my cb360. I appreciate you showing your mistakes! It almost helps us more than all of your successes. Keep up the great work 👍
I got a CB360 as well have collected about 6 spare engines and a half bike. I'm in nz. Do you know Commen Motor Collective? They have good parts and videos.
Why do you use these bottles? I am doing it only with a long transparent hose, mounted on a bord. Precondition is, that the carbs ar not far away from a passably snchronisation. On my old R100GS it works better than any flow meters. First in running idle, than with a little pulled throttle. Hope my english fits...
so how did you actually fix the problem with the revs not decreasing as fast, i didn't see a follow up on your chanel and i'm having the same problem... Thanks a lot for this trick by the way i was looking for a way to save some money and it works great!!!
Thanks for the video. Every single one provides so much inspiration. I am working on my first ever project (a CX500 cafe racer). I love everything you do and the detail you provide. I just wish I had the space and budget for my own welding kit! Keep up the great work and stay safe.
I set them up on a RD with a lollipop stick under the slides.as the slides lifted the sticks dropped. Worked for me. Then exactly 1-1/4 turns out for the air screw. Plug chops were identical. Long long time back and I didn't own any workshop equipment so had to improvise. An old bloke showed me how to do it. When he said go find 2 lolly sticks at the roadside I thought he was pulling my leg. turned out he rode bikes from the 30s to the 60s and owned all the British twins. BSA. norton. triumph. RE. villiars. AJS. Matchless. He had them all but wife's and children meant a car was needed so the bikes had to go. he didn't like the Japanese bikes and kept telling me to buy a BSA gold star. I wish I had taken his advice now but I was young and knew everything. ha.
If there isn't one already, put a little collar with a screw around the tube you use with the gauges (like the ones found in electrical connectors strips) and tighten it so that you restrict airflow enough to stabilize the needle. I built myself both the bottles and the thing with the gauges and that's how I made the needle stop vibrating erratically.
Hi Dan. Great job and bike looks lovely. I'm starting with my second CX500. I bought it in boxes and engine is running now. You are right , the plan is to do all I can myself like the other one. Apart of seat cover and rims sandblasting was all home made..lol and it's great to see it hen is finished. Thanks a lot for all the ideas. Time to enjoy your bike when we get our freedom back after all these that is going on > Gus
You could try add a smaller ID piece of tubing into the lines near the carbs to act as a dampener to help with fluctuations. But I would have thought this would be included in your kit. Looking forward to see your colortune video!
Excellent video man, newly subscribed. I'm in QLD too ~ been working on balancing the throttle bodies on my Ducati 1098, your vid helps a lot as I had similar 'low' vacuum at idle, I thought it was way off but seems it's typical. A note on the vacuum gauge set - I have exactly the same one. I found that a great fix is to drill through those brass valve bodies, cut off the o-ring portion of the valve adjustment plugs and loctite them in. Then fit in-line plastic aquarium flow valves and use them to steady the gauge fluctuations. Works absolutely perfectly. I can send pics if you like, hard to explain! Cheers again! Paul
Dumb question....How do you connect the other end of the tubing to the engine/carbs? You didn't show either? Obviously I am not a mechanic or a gear head but I find your videos fascinating and to me another form of art.
Wicked vid man, I'll def put this to use. Just curious on your opinion on something, I've got an oldschool Triumph 1200 (cardbed) and I changed the exhaust from the stock restrictive cans, to some straight through mufflers, and I'm a bit worried it's running lean now. Would you say I should be adjusting the clips, or would the fuel/air mixture screw work fine to increase fuel?
Hi, Dan! Amazing videos! What do you think about empty space in the frame under the seat? It would be nice to make some luggage space with scrambler-style covers.
👍love the channel, I appreciate it very much that you take the time to make these videos and go into so much detail, you have helped me and gave me a lot of ideas for my Kz650 scrambler build, will be going back to these videos for advice when my dad and I start the next build which we are probably going to do a cx500, thanks again from the states and stay safe.😷🇵🇹🇺🇸
Mike432 Rodrigues that’s awesome brother I’m really glad my videos are going to good use the CX bikes are definitely fun to work on and I’m sure you gonna have a good time working with your dad
Great ideas,,,couple questions, does the glass bottle method work on sync only on idle or when you give it throttle as well? Also the 2 clear tube from each glass bottle are going to where on the carburators? TY
I had that same issue with the carbs staying high then coming back after a bit, The idle was set too lean, that caused the problem. Try to enrich the idle a little and that should fix that part of it.
Awesome channel, man! I just started your scrambler build videos last night and I cannot stop watching. Hope you do more restorations and other builds in the future! BTW, how did you learn metalworking and mechanics?
If you've done a THOROUGH cleaning job on the carbs & you know the bench sync is perfect & you're doing the running sync & your needle still reads low (in the red zone), it would probably be wise to check your valve clearances (cam to shim)-My experience is, before even trying to sync a carb rack, make sure all your valves are in spec before you do........it will save you some $$$ on Tylenol......
I've an idea for the guy making these videos. How about a don't do it like this and this is a common mistake people often make video. Not being cheeky your vids are very good but a ”don't do it like this” section kind of makes sense. Most people try to do home mechanics so a guide of mistakes people often make would help a lot.
In theory you could, with 4 connected bottles. The goal is to stop the movement of the water levels. this means that all carbs "suck" evenly. But because it will slowly start sucking water when out of balance on 4 carbs now, it will be a difficult process to balance all 4 of them without the engine drinking a bit of fish-fuel. But if you're patient and careful enough, it is definitely possible!! Maybe use a bigger bottle?
Thanks for the video, clever method, but you still need the probes from the purchased kit. So if you have to buy a full dial kit anyway, it's not really budget, is it?
Hi! Dan I send you a message asking if you could guide me to get one of this hand Eastwood belt sander I just want to get one as now I will go back to work on my bike sorry for taking your time ps last video on carbs very useful thank you Robert
I don't recall you mention anything that lets you know when the carbs are balanced. When the carbs ARE balanced the fluid levels will NOT change. You stopped turning the screws when each bottle had the same amount of fluid and that would have NOTHING to do with synchronizing vacuum.
www.jetsrus.com have every jet you need. My experience with podfilters is not that positive, I must say. A pipe between carb and filter to create a distance sometimes helps out. Just 3-5 cm will do the trick.

I was sceptical about the DIY carb tuner, but seeing it in action proved me wrong. So much easier to read than those bouncing needles.

Got here the same way..
That milkbottle setup is brilliant! I can see myself making one of my own someday, if I ever need to sync some carbs. Thanks and stay safe!
Love that bike man.
I am fairly sure if you block off half the air filters your manifold vacuum pressure will rise. My brother built one like that too.
I was just looking up how to do this today. Your channel is awesome!
Brian Lanham glad it worked out good timing for you :)
Had this same experience making one of these, tried using plastic bottles and they caved in right away. Zach Miller yes Wine bottles would work well too :)

Can't beat water levels for accuracy ask a brickie. Great job m8, you should be proud 👍
Mate! This is a brilliant video! Can't believe how well your bottle gauge worked. Love the chanel, great advice. Stay safe!
Stephen Pickup thank you mate, I’m glad you liked it :)
Hey Dan thanks for all your videos. I never built a scrambler even have a motorcycle driving licence but i love your bike. Greetings from germany mo

Great video Dan That CX turned out great for the challenge and budget you were given! Looking forward to the next videos.

Great video 😁 I’m going to clean my carbs soon and now I know how to sync them on a budget. Thanks mate 👍🏼👍🏼
Stephan van Nunen look out for the tuning video coming soon :)
Cafe Racer Garage I look out to all of your video’s 😊🤘🏼
Loved watching you build the bike. Sound great. Keep up the good work.
If you could do this glass bottle method on your cb 750 that would really help. Trying to sync 4 carbs is a bit of a nightmare.
not that bad, just sync it 3 times instead of 1
U do the same thing... Just with 4 bottles. :)
my first bike was a cx like yours.
Loved that bike!
I'll be making the bottle gauge to tune my cb360. I appreciate you showing your mistakes! It almost helps us more than all of your successes. Keep up the great work 👍

Lovely job of that bike. I've always thought those bikes were wasted potential. Quality motor.
Excellent videos you make BTW.
Robert Osullivan thank you Robert, I’m glad you are enjoying the videos. Plenty more to come :)
Hi Dan- I learned something new- cheers, Mate! You look well- stay that way pls!

Paul Rose wow that’s a great idea Paul, thanx for sharing:)
My gauges are the same as in the vid, but came with the plastic flow valves, as you say works just fine..

Perfect timing! Thanks for uploading!
Awesome, I reckon I can do exactly this with my GL.
DenwayClassicCustoms I definitely think it is worth doing 😁. Glad the video helped
@@CafeRacerGarage definitely mate. Thanks!
Onya mate. Just discovered your channel.
Another great video...what kind of fitting did you use to connect your hose to the screw hole in the boot?
I’m not entirely sure it’s just the fittings that come with the kit
Great job. I’m going to use your idea on my bike that I’m restoring on my channel. Lol I’m far from that point yet though haha. Great video
great channel, your work helped my to handle the seat frame and battery box on my seven fifty. thank you. have a look if you have a sec
Also those screws you remove to attach the vacuum lines tend to leak after they get touched. (Hanging rev)
That's interesting, Thanks for the tip :)
Thanks you for the video. My bike is fuel injected can I use the bottle method to sync my throttle bodies?
Looks cool and fun to ride
Nice Video Dan!
I have been looking to buy one of those, now I wont, I make one instead..

Depends the bike. I didn't need the probes.
Hi! Dan I send you a message asking if you could guide me to get one of this hand Eastwood belt sander I just want to get one as now I will go back to work on my bike sorry for taking your time ps last video on carbs very useful thank you Robert
👌 great video cheers
If your rpms do come come down s.oothly ..
Isn't that due to a rich mixture ..jets too lage ..??
Good job 👍👍👍👌
Did you find out the cause of that idle problem? (Holy comment section resurrection Batman!!). 🙂
