I had my first hip replacement January 16th and did a LOT of prep, from buying a commode to doing exercises. The hospital gave me virtually no instructions on hip precautions and I learned 90% of my routine from RUclips. I'm healed well and am going for the second hip on April 11th. This time I will be sure to use some sort of leg lift because those first few times out of bed were SCARY. Thanks to these great docs for their sound advice.

I'm looking at having 2 total knee replacements, not at the same time, and a possible hip replacement in the next 8, or so, months. I start my Prehab soon for the first knee to be done possibly in December. I've gained SO MUCH information from watching your videos! And I see them more than once. I plan to be prepared! Thanks for all of your help!
I think this is a great video but I have just one question. After a total hip replacement, why cant you use the non operated leg under the operated leg, keep it straight and help it to the side of the bed like you did for the knee?...Thanks :)
Thanks for the video. I'm about to have hip replacement surgery and was told they would show me in the hospital how to get in and out of bed. They have asked me to show them when I come in where my bed comes to on the side of my body and I have been doing pre-op exercises for awhile because I had to wait for the hospitals to re-open after covid and I lost 20 pounds. Your video was extremely helpful especially the part about using the cane. I do something like this now because my bad hip/leg makes it necessary to give it a little help, but this video shows me something concrete that really works. They should be showing you this in PT if you are going prior to the operation. Good job and thanks.

This is a really good video. I've had a lot of knee problems and the pain can get so bad I can even move my leg in bed, not even to roll over in bed from one side to the other. It's good to be prepared and have a strategy for getting yourself around like the docs are showing here.
I really great I should to see of your videos and I am sure that I will avoided a lot of trouble. My surgeries, two in different hospital they do not show me how to move from the bed. How to eat but none come to show me what I saw in your video. I am home and can’t wait back to my normal routine. I will keep what next with outside physical therapy.
I really appreciate these videos as I will soon be seeing my surgeon and scheduling my TKR. This and the pre-surgery physical exercises have been helpful.
It not only hurts to get your leg on and off the bed, the thigh muscles where they attach around the knee are too weak to lift your leg. It takes a week or two to get enough strength back to lift your leg. The leg lifter/cane work very well, a lot better than using your opposite leg, especially at first when you're very sore.
great hint for getting out of bed after total knee replacement. Plan to practice before surgery. Started pre-op exercises. Question: how long before surgery do you recommend doing the pre-op exercises?
Thank you Docs! I have to get both hips and both knees done! Scared to death! We have no pre op instructions in our hospital and you are sent home as quickly as possible. My bedroom is upstairs and a flight of stairs to get into my house.
Hi Gloria. You are very welcome. If you have no help preop you better watch all of our videos! Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching, subscribing and for sharing if you did.

I came across your site today. Thank you for the great information. Earlier this year I had bilateral partial knee replacements, right knee in March and left in June. So far, neither has healed well, still have high levels of pain, reduced range of motion and both unstable. I am a disabled veteran and was working as an EMS helicopter pilot prior to surgery. In September, I was referred to a different surgical group and after exams, X-rays and CT, it has been determined that both need total replacements due to misalignments and extensive arthritic damage through the rest of the joint. I wish I would have found your site prior to the first as I may have recovered better. The right knee is scheduled for January and the left after they are satisfied with recovery. Thank you again for the great information that your provide.
Hi Thomas. Thank you for your service. Sorry to hear you are having a difficult time. Best of luck with your revisions. Glad we could help in any small way. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
For the first few days after partial knee replacement, I needed someone to hold my leg up till I got close enough to the edge that it could be kept straight while being slowly lowered. Also applied to getting in and out of a van.
I had knee exercises to do o pre-surgery, but no one told me about these methods to get in & out off bed until I was in the hospital, right after surgery. Would have ben helpful...
What about if you have had 5 back surgery and you already have to roll to get up or down how do you get out of bed. Most of the time I sleep on the same side as the knee replacement.
I fell and broke my femur completely in half , had the replacement op the next day . Discharged on day 5 , only told not to bend stretch or twist . Physio brought me 1 sheet of exercises 2 weeks later . Then I found your videos they was a big help thank you so much . 4 months later I walk with a stick with a slight limp , walk without one the limp is awful , won’t let anyone see me walk without my walking stick , still darnt kneel down either when I try a pain shoots through my hip , doc says I’m expecting too much too soon , can take a year or more to heal completely inside . Any advise would be very grateful for . I’m a 75 year old widow .
Hi Beverley. Sounds like you are working hard and will likely continue to improve. We would agree that you can improve out to one year. Best to work with your therapist and not worry about using a cane - you are allowed to use it forever if you need to. All the best. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
How do you get out of bed if you are right handed and usually get out on the right side of the bed…BUT…You are having the left knee done. Right knee already had a successful surgery about 11 months ago?
I’m scheduled to have my left knee replacement in a few weeks. Regarding this exercise, is it recommended to have the operated knee to the outside of the bed, or doesn’t it matter? Thanks
Doc, One important detail that needs to be mentioned is I will be entering my bed on the side of the surgical knee. Which I think is harder. Could you comment on how to approach that side? Switching sides on my bed is not an option for me! Alicia, Miami , Florida
Hi Alicia. Probably best to use the good leg to lift the surgical leg onto the bed. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Hi Lois. It is certainly a lot of surgery and a lot of pain but it allows you to avoid a second surgery. Many patients undergo bilateral total knee surgery. Best of luck to you if you take it on! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
All the videos I've seen for this function deal with a higher bed. I have a lower bed to get in and out of. I'm sure you're going to say it's the same technique, however, it's extremely difficult and I find I'm close to 90 degrees to get enough push to stand-up. Are there any keys to avoid bending past 90 in this situation?
Hmm hard to say. Potentially using an overhead assist of some sort. Or a pillow to sit on to raise you up higher. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Does it matter which side of the bed I get out of? I am having my right hip ( and later right knee) replaced, but can I move my left leg off the left side of the bed first?
Hi guys had surgery 7th Feb ,new knee , slowly getting around , Pt is extremely painful , but doing it , I've gotten many conflicts from my trainer, to PA. 's to doc on how many timed A day to do my exercise . Any suggestions ? Some day 2 others 5 , I'm confused...
@@TalkingWithDocs Always watching!! Recovery at this stage ( OP was 5.4.21) not too impressive. Surgeon had complications this time and added 4 extra screws...I SAID "4" SCREWS,DOC!! And this resident rehab MD here wonders why I'm needing 500 mg oxycontin!!!!!
Can you explain why (without crossing) carrying your replacement hip leg with the normal leg is not ok? In video you say no crossing legs but in demonstration you show you can carry the operated leg with the normal one without crossing it??
@@TalkingWithDocs Your videos and replies are saving lives. Free healthcare for all by government funding sucks. My arm was externally fixated for 2 months (for broken elbow) and came out rock hard bent 90 degrees with no help... I live in such a country. Doctors are overwhelmed, underpaid, undereducated and do not give a s.t about their patients. You teach what is proper and enable us to seek what is right. It may cost a lot but I am convinced to replace that elbow along with the destroyed hip in a proper place, not government hack houses. Thank you.
Great videos. I did practice pre op with my cane and a long towel which was good but wow much more tricky immediately after my knee surgery, it was severe pain because my quad muscle kept trying to engage. So I lifted it very high up and straight up. The his worked for me . Just find your angle and having a strong core certainly helps. 😃 5 days post op. Ohh also I lifted weights while seated. Upper body strength makes getting my n and out of bed and using walked much easier.
Subscriber here...again! Do I need any of those items for anterior replacement? My bed is kind of high. I usually climb in putting my left knee on the bed and pulling up. My hip surgery is April and your videos are helping.
Hi kay. Thanks for subscribing! Often for the anterior approach some of the restrictions differ. Best to discuss with your surgeon their specific protocols. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.
And ask your dog to bring for you too, lol. My little guy will probably sit on my bed and wait for me to hook him to it afterwards 16lb Papillon....Going to be challenging. I'm glad he's a senior doggo ...
When I had my hip replacement they never showed me use of CANE or LOOP to get out of bed they showed me to use one leg for support and it was OK. I had to change sides of bed when I got other hip done and no sheets just light blanket or nothing if warm in house. Also I was told to sleep on the operated side?
They gave me no restrictions when they release me from my hip replacement 3 days ago. No mention whatsoever of the 90 degree. The thought of dislocation is scary.
Hi Catherine. The risk is thankfully very low and the risky activities change with which approach you had. A little odd you didn’t get some info though. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I just had anterior and used my yoga strap to grt leg up and in. I lived the garbage bage slide method. Im using that in bed and queen anne chair. Also took your advice in practicing the exercises ahead of time.
Fell and had to have hip replacement due to fracture and osteoporosis in September 2021. Now into early 2021. Still can't walk properly outside have to use a rollator to get about. Worse problem is early morning when I wake up. Have real problems getting out of bed as I have had 2 hip replacement. I struggle to lift myself off bed grabbing sheets to help pull me up. Any suggestions ? I am 74 and have fibromyalgia as well. i have knee replacements 2 hip replacements and a reversal shoulder replace ment in December 2021. Only got one limb with no metal in that's my left arm. All this caused by arthritis and 2 very bad falls 2019 and 2021 Getting out of bed is my biggest problem
Hi Dorothy. Sorry to hear that. Best advice would be to see a therapist who can help increase your upper body strength as well as your core. Slow and steady. Thanks for watching and subscribing
This 90 degree rule how many days its lifelong or ?. How many days i want to take my legs likes this in to bed. Onemore thing how can i go to in to bed. You tell exactly pls. This is out from bed. How can go in to bed tell exact.
Hi Shaik. So it is usually recommended for 6-12 weeks but it is controversial. Patients that have hip replacements need to be sensible for the rest of their lives but thankfully hip dislocation is actually quite uncommon. Getting in and out of bed carefully is the answer. It will get better with time. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.
I love “Use your good leg to help move your operative leg”, when many of us have two wrecked knees/ hips ! (That’s when we use our handy-dandy leg-lifter or a cane.) 😄
I will have a total left knee replacement in 2 weeks. I was cognizant about the importance of pre-hab from your videos and made sure I got a doctor order to do it when I went to the pre-op appointment. I called P.T. (U.S.), and they informed me there were no openings until the day AFTER my surgery. Per the surgeons instructions, I made an appointment for 2 days post-op and wanted to make future 3x/week appointments but was not allowed to. The receptionist said, "Once you have the initial evaluation, you can schedule future appointments." By then they'll be filled up a month ahead, and I won't get any pre - or post-op P.T.! I AM SO FRUSTRATED! thank goodness for your videos; I guess I am on my own.

Thank I need to save this video because I'm get a hip replacement march thank you 😷😷😷dr's ❤️
You got this! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
How do you feel about having both knees replaced at the same time
Hi Lois. It is certainly a lot of surgery and a lot of pain but it allows you to avoid a second surgery. Many patients undergo bilateral total knee surgery. Best of luck to you if you take it on! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Can’t find the video of total knee replacement- is it still up?
Hi Paul T. Yes it is. We see that you found it. Best of luck and thanks for watching.
Awesome tips!

I had my hip replaced 7 days ago and I’m finding your commentary very helpful. Thank you.
So...after hip replacement (super 👣 lateral) how long do you have to maintain no 90 degree bend, forever? ???
Hi Ann. Usually 6-12 weeks. But no extreme range forever
You guys are so funny and informative. I have a question for fun; how do you mend a broken heart?
Hi Kathy. Thanks so much. We suspect this is a joke. Probably not suture. Thanks for watching and subscribing
She didn’t have the doc demonstrate the leg lifter which I just purchased
Sorry about that Lorena. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thanks for the info. I’m getting a total knee replacement in a week and a half.
Well good luck to you Edward. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Does it matter which side of the bed I get out of? I am having my right hip ( and later right knee) replaced, but can I move my left leg off the left side of the bed first?
Yes just carefully as you don’t want the right hip cranked too far to the outside. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hi Todd. We would say as a many times as you can really within the limits of your pain. Unless you fall you can’t really overdo it. Plus lots of icing
Laying in this rehab bed watching this video trying to get out of this rehab bed!!!!!
HI Darth. Congrats! Best of luck with your recovery. Thanks for watching.
Where is she from?
Ontario
Can you explain why (without crossing) carrying your replacement hip leg with the normal leg is not ok? In video you say no crossing legs but in demonstration you show you can carry the operated leg with the normal one without crossing it??
You can as long as that hip hasn’t been replaced before should be ok. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thank you.
Im gettimg both kness done at same time any advice for getting in and out of bed
Just go slowly and carefully and protect the one that hurts the most
Interesting!
Thanks for watching Chryseas S.
Hi FAB ULOUS. Sounds like you are well on the way. Rehab is hard but worth it. Good luck and keep us posted. Thanks for watching.
For TKR, you can also use a Dog leash, or if you have a terrycloth or heavy velour bathrobe, you can use the BELT! :)
Hi photogram1. Very good suggestions. Thanks for watching.
And ask your dog to bring for you too, lol. My little guy will probably sit on my bed and wait for me to hook him to it afterwards 16lb Papillon....Going to be challenging. I'm glad he's a senior doggo ...
Thank yo
My stitches are right on the knee, they have me wearing a device with metal bars on all sides except the knee cap. Any none bend ideas?
Hi Odin. That may be to protect the ligaments which can be stretched during the procedure. Thanks for watching and subscribing
What if get both knees done at the same time
my nurse has me take my repaired hip last the exact opposite of what you say, help
Not sure what to tell you Whinney. Maybe consider getting another nurse if you lack confidence. Thanks for watching and subscribing
How do I get out of bed after having both knees replaced ?
Very slowly and carefully Bryan. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
When I had my hip replacement they never showed me use of CANE or LOOP to get out of bed they showed me to use one leg for support and it was OK. I had to change sides of bed when I got other hip done and no sheets just light blanket or nothing if warm in house. Also I was told to sleep on the operated side?
That isn’t uncommon. To avoid the incision at first. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Very nice M. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Bilateral knee replacement?!!! How !!
OK……after getting your self out of bed……how do you get to standing and then on to the bathroom
Slowly and with a walker
2 knee replacements?
It can be a bit tricky as both are freshly operated on. Then let pain be your guide. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hi
This is great video
Glad you liked it Neil. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
How to do my knee skin I don't know .
Not sure the exact question
I love “Use your good leg to help move your operative leg”, when many of us have two wrecked knees/ hips ! (That’s when we use our handy-dandy leg-lifter or a cane.) 😄
True enough
Using a cane as a leg lifter was worth the price of admission to this video - thanks!
Glad you liked it Liz. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Like the "raisin cane" method.
Ha. Very nice James. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
