Loved your comments. I was 15 when this song came out, I'm 55 now. This song is as great now as it was now. It's great that you recognize the difference from today's music. You said it perfectly, the effort that is put into the performances, the better vocals, lyrics, and because these just are real musicians. Keep up the great work!

It's the 80s Reverb and use of Synthesizer that was seen as futuristic.... in some ways it does still. 80s rock was a time of great innovation and creativity. New technologies, musicians were able to experiment with new sounds and create some of the most iconic tracks of all time. Tears for Fears - were New Wave. The 80s were a time when genres started merging and mutating. There were many different genres in the Rock era: New wave, post-punk, synthpop, indie rock, college rock, glam punk, alternative rock, power pop.... and of course the girl bands, big hair, hair metal to thrash metal. Rock ballads as each big group did a ballad or two that were hits. Some of it course started in the 70s and took off in the 80s. Styles like the 60s and 70s before had new trends for the 80s.

The 80's is a great example of creativity being the leader. Yes, it sometimes got suffocated by the pressures of the record companies but still. Quality stands the test of time very much like the stiff hairdo of Orzabal so iconic of the era and of youthful experimentation.

The song is "Shout" by Tears for Fears, released in 1985. The lyrics touch upon themes of frustration, societal pressures, and the desire for personal freedom. The song's chorus, "Shout, Shout, let it all out," acts as a call for expressing one's emotions and letting go of internal struggles.
    Verse 1:
    "In violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul
    In black and white
They really, really ought to know
    Those one track minds
That took you for a working boy
    Kiss them goodbye
You shouldn't have to jump for joy"
These lines discuss the challenging and turbulent times the world is going through. The phrase "violent times" might refer to both physical and emotional violence or turmoil. The song suggests that people should not compromise their values or integrity ("You shouldn't have to sell your soul") to fit into a narrow and rigid perspective of life ("Those one track minds"). It encourages individuals to break free from societal expectations and not be forced to pretend to be happy ("You shouldn't have to jump for joy") when they are not.
    Verse 2:
    "They gave you life
And in return, you gave them hell
    As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale"
In these lines, the song explores the dynamics between generations, specifically between parents (or authority figures) and their children. The phrase "They gave you life, and in return, you gave them hell" might refer to the struggles and conflicts that arise between different generations. It suggests that young people often rebel or challenge the norms set by their elders. "As cold as ice, I hope we live to tell the tale" hints at the cold and distant relationship between the generations, and it expresses a hope for a resolution to the conflicts.
    Chorus:
"Shout, Shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you
    Come on"
The chorus serves as the central message of the song, urging people to express themselves ("Shout, Shout, let it all out") and let go of things that are burdening them ("These are the things I can do without"). It's a call for open communication and honesty, encouraging listeners to speak up and share their thoughts and feelings ("Come on, I'm talking to you").
    Bridge:
"And when you've taken down your guard
If I could change your mind
I'd really love to break your heart"
The bridge suggests vulnerability and openness ("when you've taken down your guard") and indicates a desire to bring about change ("If I could change your mind"). The line "I'd really love to break your heart" might not necessarily mean causing harm but rather touching someone emotionally or making them feel deeply. It can be interpreted as a wish to connect with someone on a profound level.
Overall, "Shout" by Tears for Fears conveys a powerful message about the importance of self-expression, breaking free from societal pressures, and fostering honest communication to bridge the gaps between individuals and generations.

This is such a classic. Brings back great memories. I feel so fortunate to have been a teen in the UK in the 1980s with so much fantastic music, and it's great to see it being appreciated decades later by the following generations! You're completely right about how unique the 80s sound was (but maybe I'm biased!)
Tears For Fears are definitely work checking out more if you like this sound. "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" was their other big hit, but there are also "Head Over Heels", "Woman in Chains", "Break It Down Again", "Sowing the Seeds of Love", "Pale Shelter" and "Raoul and the Kings of Spain", and those are just my personal favourites.

Back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, music was much different. The 60s and 80s are similar due to the incredible level of fresh sounds and unprecedented creativity. During each decade, the music was eclectic and no one sounded like anyone else. Each artist was unique creating their own sound and style of delivery. The punk movement which began around the mid 70s in England had a huge impact on the industry. Out of punk, came New Wave and the "Romantic Movement", of the era. It was during the 80s where you witnessed the second wave of what would be deemed as the "second British invasion", with groups like "Tears for Fears", "The Police", "Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry)", "Psychodelic Furs", "Gary Numan" and so many others, burning up the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Both members of TFF were treated, lets just say not great as kids, and these songs are a reflection on their unhappy childhood, hence the emotion he puts in to it. Really need to listen to the first album called 'The Hurting' which explains a lot about it. However, 'Shout' is actually on their second album.

I know their next 2 albums were heavily influenced by the Beatles, but "The Hurting" and "Songs from the Big Chair" are both in a class of their own.

Summed up perfectly. I was a youth at this time in England and it was epic. Anyone around then will miss those days so much. And i agree with what you say about modern music and i think a lot of the blame goes on these 'talent' shows were music has been reduced to a pretty boy/girl contest and not an art form and every modern show is basically just about shifting as much merch as possible and cashing in before the fad dies off and i really doubt that in 40 years time people will be looking back on today's music and find it relatable. I dont listen to any modern music and not just became I'm old and nostalgic for the 80s it's because it just doesn't do anything for me. They are more models and actors than genuine musicians and that's a real pity. Id love to be able to hear some really good modern fresh music but it all sounds so fake and forced to my ears and auto tune etc has dehumanised it and they all seem to sound the same. And something i often hear said is 'this could be released today and would still stand up' etc. and they say that as a compliment when really it's an insult. But the smarter youth of today are starting to see all this themselves now, like my 18 year old daughter who loves 80s music and i hope theres a backlash coming against all this over hyped mediocre at best modern music and those young ppl who see this will start to take music forwards by taking it back again and out of the hands of these tasteless talent show judges who have killed creativity and just want puppets and have the worst taste of all. And i think eventually it is bound to happen. Everything you said was 100% and you are wise beyond your years. So there is hope left.
