I think my favorite thing about these reviews is that the reviewer is kind of one of us; not an xc racer, not some big name Enduro racer, or a downhill park guy. He's a trail guy that is well informed and pretty honest.

@@bikersedge to be honest with you I’m struggling to decide whether I’m going to buy the Ranger for the transition spur. I know that you own the spur. I also think the spur is special but I like the geometry on the range are better.
The question I have is I noticed that I’m very sensitive to weight on a bike. I know the Ranger is a little bit heavier than the spur by 1lb. My question is do you feel the extra weight on the bike? Also wanted to know if the spur feels like it has more in the back as the numbers would suggest. I know you’re busy, but I hope to get your reply, because I value your opinion very much.

@@ParkflyersRC You may have just asked the worst guy about the weight issue. I think weight is a very overemphasized issue with bikes. Geo and suspension design make a much bigger impact on how a bike rides to me than weight. A 30lb bike with good geo and a good suspension platform will climb much better than a 22lb bike with bad geo and inefficient suspension.
As far as suspension feel on the Spur - it feels like it has 120. Doesn't feel deeper than the numbers.

I have both the Ranger and Rascal. For me.....the Ranger is much better on trails in Corner Canyon or most trails in Park City (Round Valley). The Rascal seems much better on trails in St George where there's a lot of chunk up and down. Thought I was going to get rid of the Ranger when I got the Rascal but like it way too much.

I have the 22' Element and just sold my Ripley AF. AF was set up with 2.6 tires, and felt more confident on the downhill, chunk. The Element has more traction but isn't as efficient as the AF. But the Element is a better climber in just about every situation, maybe due it's traction and its weight? (almost 5 pounds) It is also more agile and flowy than the AF on the downhills. But the longer wheelbase of the Element can feel odd, when on super steeps climbs. But that longer wheelbase keeps the nose on the ground better than the AF.

I was torn between the Ranger and the Spur. Your Spur review and many like it convinced me that was the way to go. Couldn't be happier with my choice and this review kind of proved to me that the Ranger would have been a little too oldskool in the geometry for the riding I enjoy. Lovely looking bike though, especially in that green colourway.

Purchased a Ranger frame.Tried the Sid setup, it was lacking support (shock) and during multiple, continuous bumps at speed the fork wouldn't keep up. Switched to Pike 130 and the Push coil. Bike climbs great, downhills great (within reason but way more stable), better support for heavier riders. For the trails we ride it was a great combo and keeps true to it's ride intent. Sid XC, Pike/Push trail. It's a great platform just need to pick the right suspension for your trails

What...does....it....weigh? I may have missed it, and it's easy to look up, but first thing I want to know in a review like this, when we're talking about 'making climbing fun again' is what the complete bike weighs, and what the wheels and tires that are on it weigh. Climbing feel and performance are going to be affected tremendously by overall weight and wheel/tire weight. ESpecially if you're a rider who pedals to the top, spending an hour or more climbing before descending.

Yes, there's room in my head for anyone who doesn't care about what their bike weighs, that's fine, but I think it really does matter. You don't have to be a competitive racer to reap huge benefits from light wheels and light-er than box stock components. Picture this, favorite loop of ours here in EUG, OR area is a 26mi loop with 6k' of climbing. A 35lb stock trail bike with alloy wheels and 1200g tires is going to be a very different experience than the 26lb Ranger with carbon wheels that you're reviewing here. It matters. I like your reviews, but I would respectfully suggest that if you're really trying to review a bike and provide as much helpful info as possible, weight is one the first things I want to know, respectfully--Digging in on this because with "Making climbing fun again"as the title of your review, weight does make a difference for anyone.

I ride a yeti sb130 which is nearly the equivalent to the current Stumpjumper and it is a bit of a pig on big 30-40-50 miles days when you don't really need what it is. To me this makes it not the "1 bike" unless all you do is climb for the descents, then it's perfect. The Ripley or a slacker bike than the Ranger or sb115 like an Epic EVO with 66.5 head angle and 110/120 are both more appropriate "single bike" choices. The eVo for people who don't get into quite as many black tech trails or the Ripley if skill is low or truly pushing into black and double blacks with skills.
I've been testing my new Specialized Epic Evo on trails most people suit up for and ride for Enduro races here in the PNW. Of course my sb130/150 does them with more ease but I am amazed at how far the Evo can get into it with focus. The Ripley is what's intriguing me to slot right between these two bikes and possibly become the "road trip" bike if set up with a 130 Pike.

Hi, how would you compare the Ranger to the Yeti SB115?

Pretty similar. I think the Ranger is a bit more XC while the SB115 is a bit more trail.

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  Год назад

That’s a tough one. I would have to say the Trance feels a bit quicker on the pedals although it lacks some traction when compared to the Ranger. Downhill I’d say they’re fairly similar. The Ranger might have a bit softer feeling suspension but the Trance felt a bit more confident to me.

I haven’t ridden the alloy Trance 29 but frame material is such a tiny difference in how a bike rides. The Trance is more XC and the Ripley is more trail.

This is almost the same geo as my 2013 Stumpjumper Elite 29, but I have 130/130 travel. All of a sudden this Geo is "fun" again? Must be a new shift coming in the industry.
Next year, HTAs will be 70 degrees and STAs will be back to 70 degrees. Lol. The industry has to push FOMO and gotta have. Who would have guessed LLS bikes aren't best for most trails in the USA?

@@bikersedge I live in OH. That's the difference. I would feel different, if I lived in paradise, like you. Lots of climbs for short techy descents where I live.
I ride mostly ungroomed natural hiking trails, so you need a lot more trials skills than confidence at high speeds. The trails just don't demand it. I definitely understood what you meant when saying it feels like a dirt jumper after being on big rigs. My trails demand a light bike that is nimble. The shorter wheelbase is noticeable in tighter slow speed riding, as you noted.

Not trying to be a bogart but skill is everything. The bike is merely a tool. I have demo'd newer geos and they just aren't better for what I do. I also ride a 2x10 carbon drivetrain. It gives me a better rage of gears for steep uphill tech, since I don't have a high engagement hub.

I demoed one of these last fall and I just didn't love it and the build spec my local shop was offering on it was kinda atrocious. Ended up with the 22' Spark and I've been getting along with it pretty well its definitely more of a rocketship in the climbs and descends about on par with the ranger even though spur has slacker head angle.
