Tease the fans in the weeks leading up but do it in a plausible deniability type way and then reveal the mystery partner early on and people calm back down. THEN hit them with this, right at the end of the show, when even the more optimistic fans have long given up hope.

As soon as I thought it was over. I wasnt too bummed because I prepared myself to be not too hyped about his return just in case it wasnt true. More and more people kept saying no hes not gonna.
