Well Derek, I've been watching you since accidentally stumbling across your Splatterhouse video as the HVGN. And you're consistently fun, funny, upbeat and a pleasure to follow and view. Thanks for all of both yours and your wife's hard work! One of the best channels on the platform.
I would love a video on the Master System version. That is the one i grew up with, but no one ever talks about it. I don't think it has ever been re-released and there are almost no videos about it on RUclips. Please talk a little about that one as well. It's also pretty strange to have a developer make a demake of it's own game for an older system.
The Master System versions of Sonic 1, 2, & Chaos were all re-released on the Wii Virtual Console, but I get what you're saying, because the 8-bit games are generally good. It wasn't really strange to see, though, since Sonic 1 8-bit was originally made specifically for the Game Gear to help advertise that handheld, but since the MS used the same overall hardware (& was still selling extremely well in Europe), Sega also asked for a console version. In fact, Sonic 1 8-bit was the entire reason why Yuzo Koshiro even formed Ancient Corp with his family! He offered programming services, but Sega didn't make those kinds of deals with individuals, so Koshiro had to form a studio in order to start development.
@@TheLandofObscusion That's all very interesting to know! I also grew up with the SMS version of Sonic 1 and for the longest time I thought that was what Sonic for me, would be years before I played the Mega Drive version.
not as strange as you thought. the sega game gear got that port as well, and we all know it's tecnicly a master system with a beafed up color pallet. that and the sms was still doing well in the Uk where it was seen as the poor man's genesis in the best possible way. speaking of the sms port, I'd like to see you cover the Palm OS port that was released in 2005. nobody talks about that, but that's probably because nobody talks about palm OS gaming in general.
Game Gear version is actually heavily different - many hitbox, collision and overall issues were fixed, a lot of things in the level design and spritework were changed to play better on the Game Gear and the bosses were changed entierly. Some (like me) might argue the Game Gear version is superior due to those changes alone - some of the level design is much worse in the MS version.
They're interesting games in their own right, for sure. I believe the Master System version of Sonic 1 was the last ever game to come out in North America on the system, too. Which, let's be real, is one of the best last games on a console ever considering they're usually shovelware or yearly sports titles.
For me, perhaps, the most unusual Sonic port is the one made for iPods, and officially sold by Apple back when they had iPod Games in iTunes Store. I expect it was done by 2 interns in 2 weeks and they were probably crunching really hard just to manage that. Sega was obsessed with rushing games and not giving them big enough teams at the time (a theme they started with Sonic 2) and it wasn’t until both this and 06 nearly killed the franchise that they started giving games more than 6 months to be developed again, but they did the same thing with forces, it got rushed and had only 2 level designers with no experience to design everything.

the truth is that the gba hardware doesn't have blast processing so it couldn't handle sonic the hedgehog, and that was the reason why it flopped so bad.
Great video! This reminded me: there was a Java version of Sonic 1 I had on my ancient flip phone, way back in the day. It ran like a slideshow and I played it like a strategy game from how slowly it performed on my phone. I haven’t seen it since then, but watching the GBA version of Sonic 1 did give me some flashbacks to it. Maybe the same team that developed the pre-smartphone java port developed the GBA version? Might be worth checking out if you wanna try every Sonic 1 port anyway. Thanks and have a good one!
Okay, I need to clarify about that Virtual Boy comment. VB only sold 770,000 units worldwide. the Saturn sol 9.26 million. The Saturn flopped outside of glorious Nippon but it outpaced the Virtual Boy at least. Good lord failing to outsell the VB is like failing to outpace a 3 legged donkey.
Yes, one was on store shelves for longer. But in the initial months of ‘95, Virtual Boy outsold the Sega Saturn. They both sold poorly, but, as we said in the video “Nintendo didn’t bet the farm on the Virtual Boy and could cut it free when it failed”. Sega on the other hand, was stuck with the Saturn,
Maybe it’s just the fact that I have an ear infection right now or something, but the Sega logo in Sonic Genesis doesn’t sound that bad, it reminds me of how it used to sound in the old iOS emulated version over the tinny speaker of the iPod I grew up with.
I bought Sonic 2006, and it's strategy guide, when it released. It was the last Sonic game I bought for the longest time. I'm still haunted by the load times. The strategy guide was also equally a mess, it was divided between the three characters in a very weird way that was hard to follow. Also, my friend bought the game boy advance port of Sonic 1 as their first introduction to Sonic the hedgehog and they were thoroughly disappointed. I really liked seeing all these ports and I'm definitely up for more Sonic port expiration!
There is a homebrew port of Sonic 1 for GBA that actually work well. There is no excuse for how bad the official port is. It was definitely a very rushed thing probably duct taped together in 2 weeks by a 1 man team in the basement of Sega.
Congratulations, Derek, you convinced me to spend real money on Sonic Genesis. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. Even though you told me not to. My stupidity can't be stopped
4:26 Eh, in my experience, the Wii gave the Virtual Boy a run for its money; the motion controls _never_ worked correctly, with it always reading incorrect tilt, and the pointer always spazzing about and flickering, no matter which Wiimote I was using (normal or MotionPlus), the sensor bar's location, my location in proximity to it, or how many times I "recalibrated" the motion controls. This made it practically impossible to play the vast majority of Wii games. Indeed, the only Wii games I find enjoyable are those that minimise motion and/or pointer usage, or scrap it altogether. Twilight Princess, for example, allows the player to turn the pointer off, and any motion is a sword slash - no issues here. Super Paper Mario does use motion and the pointer, but incredibly rarely and only for a couple seconds each time; it's mainly played with a horizontal Wiimote, which is alright. Super Smash Bros. Brawl doesn't use motion or the pointer at all, making it the undisputed king of Wii games. The Wii really should have made the Classic Controller a universal backup, in case the motion controls become unusable...
As a child I had a lot of trouble with the motion controls, the pointer never worked properly and I always had trouble getting into games, but once I got into the game it almost always worked perfectly, but the tilt was never that reliable I admit, it would often work fine for some degrees and then glitch out. In recent years though, I got myself another Wii, and it works way better. The trick is to hold the Wiimote level and further back, that helped a lot for me, and it’s just a much more stable experience than I remembered. I agree, all games should have controller support, but I personally don’t hate the motion controls. There are some games that are still really unreliable but a lot of Nintendo games work great, especially the ones that use MotionPlus, Wii Sports Resort is the best Wii game in my opinion since the motion control (aside from some tilt issues and it not always recognising a forward thrust.) is basically perfect, it feels so good to play especially the plane minigame.
in all seriousness, the "sonic movie" it predicted is actually the 1999 OVA (which did get an english dub), which is known for being one of the best game to film adaptations.
Drove home from Toys R Us in the UK with Sonic Jam in shrink wrap. I remember telling my mum the old classic 'I'LL NEVER ASK FOR ANYTHING ELSE AGAIN!'. How right I was!
Derek: Sonic 1 wasn't designed to go that fast, though, my dumba** still managed to get in trouble though. Sonic: I'm so so sorry... Derek: I'm not good at these games. Sonic: No, what I meant to say was "I'm so sorry that you have nothing more important to do in life." That was great lol! 😂😂😂
I hope that SSFF delves into other Sonic topics as well - there are a lot of interesting concepts to dive into on the handheld end that feel SSFF-friendly: - All of the handheld-exclusive platformers that were fairly well-liked and promptly never seen again (Sonic Advance 1/2/3, Sonic Rush + Sonic Rush Adventures) - Some of the wildly experimental stuff on handhelds (turn-based RPG Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, arena fighter Sonic Battle, 2d racers Sonic Rivals 1+2, so many more) - SO many racing games. *so* many. And that's without even getting into the more well-trodden territory of the Wii titles, '06, and the funkiness of modern-era 3D Sonic.
The first sonic game I ever played was the GBA port, and I never actually played the original version until about a decade later. When I first heard how infamous the GBA port is, I was shocked because that’s just how I thought the game was supposed to be

I am a huge Sonic the Hedgehog fan and I just want to express how thankful I am that you guys were able to talk about good and bad aspects of certain ports without falling to the cliche of bashing the series. This was a fantastic video and I'd love to see you cover Sonic again in the future.
To quote Tom Servo about that GBA port: "Folks! They just did not care!"
Now it’s hard to get to, as iTunes is discontinued, iPod Games even more so, and only those who bought this game for their iPods back when it was live, can play this game nowadays.
that was a thing?!
@@lunarbeing4982 Yep, the original Sonic the Hedgehog playable on iPod 5gen, iPod Classic, and iPod Nano 3rd gen (playabale on 4 and 5 i think) under the short-lived iTunes iPod Games category.
"...actually had a pretty good run."
I see what you did there.
Great video. That mobile phone port looks pretty dang good. Also, I see you have a Super Wide Gear on your shelf. A gentleman's accessory.
I remember years ago I bought sonic anniversary for my GBA from Zellers when they were still around. I found it in a bargain bin for $4.99 and oooh boy it was brutal. I played it for a day and never touched it again. I don't know where I left it but it disappeared from my collection.
Virtual boy sales 770.000 vs Saturn sales 9,5 millions.
I still find it incredibly sad that Sega couldn't even port Sonic 1 to the GBA.
They used the advance engine that's why.
There is a homebrew version of Sonic 1 for GBA that actually work well.
@@chamoo232 As the port is shown in this video; it's merely a proof of concept made by Stealth (who later aided on the development of Sonic Mania alongside other well known talents in the community) which shows that it's completely possible to make a good port of the game into the GBA.
As for the music, it is said to be sourced from a Java port of thd game before the GBA release, the soundtrack is on RUclips, search for it, they said they sounded better the GBA's soundtrack.
Fun fact, there was actually a Sonic movie out by the time Sonic Jam was created- the Sonic OVA! Though it’s technically two episodes of a scrapped TV pilot smushed together...
"I've never covered Sonic before on this channel"
Am I getting Mandela'd here? I could swear I've heard him say this before.
I remember getting Sonic Gba back when I was a kid and they still had gba games at walmart, I've never beat the game, always had laggy portions and ahhh I dont regret playing it, it's an experience
"Why have I never covered Sonic?"
The fandom?
(There's probably already Derek The Hedgehog DeviantArt.)
There is, apparently, A LOT of Derek the Hedgehog art. Though there's at least some "Your name here" the Hedgehog art.

I remember when you talked about how some kids were mario kids, some sonic kids, and you were a megaman kid. I was always a sonic kid. It's nice to see you covering sonic all these years later
I was more into other stuff like, warioware, earthbound, and rhythm heaven
Who is this? Jerek? Darren? UGH! I wish he introduced himself or something.
8:07 I sometimes see "Let's Listen" videos pop up whenever I search up video game music. I never clicked on any of them, but I assume that this is what they're all like?
Oh I think I know those, I believe they're by a guy whose name is some variation of Proto Man or has a Proto Man avatar?
They're just straight uploads of the music aside for being extended, but IIRC they're included in his Let's Play playlists for some reason, which I assume is where the "Let's Listen" label came from.
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis GBA was one of my first sonic games. I thought it was good...until I got Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube and realized how bad it was....I never had the patience to get past Marble Zone.
What was so broken about marble zone?
@@MaxOakland nothing was broken in particular. It’s just that the slowdown in the GBA game made the parts where you have to push blocks too tedious for young me to stand
I just love the title screen announcement of Sonic Jam on the Saturn as it sounds so emphatically fast paced and serious: "Sonic JAM!"
*Sonic the hedgehog 1 on gba*
DO NOT TOUCH THAT CURSED THING!!
Would love to see more Sonic videos. Love Punching Weight man. Makes me happy to see others who collect the weird, useless, and unneeded. Keep up the great work!
10:48 How the west was worse
Loved this episode, Derek. I'll be patiently waiting for te next Sonic ports video. Your enthusiasm is contagious!
uh oh. this is gonna be a train wreck
Bless Derek and Producer Grace for their endless passion and enthusiasm, these videos are a delight.
I never realized how many different ports of Sonic the Hedgehog I have until you pointed it out to me. Thanks
this is cool mylord i like it alot!
the historical pieces are also cool. i like that sega just picked up his pitch and then years later sonic mania happened
That was a super interesting episode Derek, who would have thought such a disaster of a game was the start of something much better in the end.
MORE SONIC PLEASE!
I loved this episode, it's clear you really enjoyed it, too!
*"Welcome To Our Very First Sonic The Hedgehog Video!"*
It's almost hard to believe that this is the first Sonic the Hedgehog video... CONGRATS!!! 🎉😄😁👍
the truth is that the gba hardware doesn't have blast processing so it couldn't handle sonic the hedgehog, and that was the reason why it flopped so bad.
Seriously, sonic game history and mystery is one rabbit hole that is fun as hell to dive down.
Ohhh... we definitely need you to dive deeper. We want some Doom levels of deep diving here.
That “idk” at the top of the video really lightened my mood for a moment.
More Sonic please!! This was so insightful! Your Sonic collection is so impressive
Always excited for a Stop Skeletons vid 😋
EDIT: huge props for the Attitude Era mention
"It inspired me with it's awfulness."
As an editor, this spoke to me.
Of COURSE i want more, man! Sonic's a fascination topic, be it the up, downs, or all-arounds!
"It didn't release"
The game was so amazing it was sentient and could even release itself.
"It's sonic it's cool! Movie cool!"
A don't dead open inside moment on that Jam cinema sign
I hope the iPod video port is in the next episode of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 ports.
Enjoyed this video. Looking forward to more videos about Sonic or ports!
Congratulations, Derek, you convinced me to spend real money on Sonic Genesis.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. Even though you told me not to. My stupidity can't be stopped
The parallax clouds exist on the Genesis version as well. You just need the later revision of the cart.
It’s cool that they updated that
4:26 Eh, in my experience, the Wii gave the Virtual Boy a run for its money; the motion controls _never_ worked correctly, with it always reading incorrect tilt, and the pointer always spazzing about and flickering, no matter which Wiimote I was using (normal or MotionPlus), the sensor bar's location, my location in proximity to it, or how many times I "recalibrated" the motion controls.
Ah , Studiopolis 2 music from Sonic Mania during the Taxman and Stealth Port, a lovely prelude and foreshadow to the Mania bit
in all seriousness, the "sonic movie" it predicted is actually the 1999 OVA (which did get an english dub), which is known for being one of the best game to film adaptations.
Sonic: No, what I meant to say was "I'm so sorry that you have nothing more important to do in life."
That was great lol! 😂😂😂
0:12 - Genesis 6-Pak? Which six games are included, and where can I get a copy (either a hardware copy for the console or an image for emulation)?
I always just stare a Derek's GBA collection, especially that Zero Mission box...mad jelly of it.
Great video! I want more of that stuff !
"November 14th should be celebrated as a national day of remembrance:. Me:.. Thats my Birthday ,lmao
I hope that SSFF delves into other Sonic topics as well - there are a lot of interesting concepts to dive into on the handheld end that feel SSFF-friendly:
- All of the handheld-exclusive platformers that were fairly well-liked and promptly never seen again (Sonic Advance 1/2/3, Sonic Rush + Sonic Rush Adventures)
- Some of the wildly experimental stuff on handhelds (turn-based RPG Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, arena fighter Sonic Battle, 2d racers Sonic Rivals 1+2, so many more)
- SO many racing games. *so* many.
And that's without even getting into the more well-trodden territory of the Wii titles, '06, and the funkiness of modern-era 3D Sonic.
Such a great video!! Pumped for part 2!
The first sonic game I ever played was the GBA port, and I never actually played the original version until about a decade later. When I first heard how infamous the GBA port is, I was shocked because that’s just how I thought the game was supposed to be
I still don’t understand why the remasters of Sonic 1 and 2 continue to be mobile only. They’re the best possible versions!
Sonic 1 on GBA was the first game I ever owned. I didn't realise how bad it was until years later. Can't believe it started me on my video game journey alongside Sonic X and the Pokemon anime.
I always enjoy anything Sonic or Mario related, keep it coming
Mania proves that at least the Classic Sonic fans mostly know what they want as a Sonic game and can agree with each other
Derek singing "I'm Proud to be an American" put this video over the top for me. A+

God help you.
As long as you don't act like a classicist, I will still love you.
This channel deserves more subs.
