  • I really enjoy watching the birds that come by to visit our bird feeder cameras. It's nice to see the bird regulars that visit daily. I enjoy watching how the birds interact with other bird species; some are fine with different bird species, and then there are some, like the grackles and the brown-headed cowbirds, that can be very territorial.
Not all birds of the same species get along, just like people. Take, for example, the house finches. They're usually the first ones at the feeder in the morning and typically come in groups of five or more. Some within that group will block other house finches from feeding. They hang out at the back of the feeder, on the perch, and wait until they can swoop in and snatch some seeds.
This footage was taken July 7, 2024; all the video footage is from the afternoon.

I also like them, and I love their eyes. Sometimes, I'll talk to them since the camera has a speaker. Initially, when they were getting too bossy, I'd try to get them to stop; however, now I just let them sort it out. They have their own pecking order, which I'm clueless about. The finches appear to respond favorably to my voice. Perhaps they recognize my voice when I'm outdoors saying hello to them. I usually follow that with feeder refills. :)
