But imagine that you are staying in that hotel and your room key card doesn't work, and you can't get into the room to sleep, shower, change clothes, get to medication. Or you've arrived; after a long, tiring trip; and can't be checked in.

In the mid 2000s I got aware of how bad the internet was to keep you secure from hackers. If you had windows computers without an antivirus you’d get hacked literally minutes after searching on the web … I dumped Windows and got me an Apple laptop …never had a virus but I have a friend who also got hacked on a MacBook. Ever since the 2010s I don’t share anything personal no name ,address ,social media and everything I can get away with. The internet is a joke …it started great (I remember people back then didn’t have a password on their Wi-Fi …you could literally use your neighbors internet if it wasn’t locked and no issues …that didn’t last long tho because of hackers) …today it’s a total joke , Google has become all business and nothing else 🤷🤮🤮😅
I agree, I have said this for close to 30 years but, I don't get why we can't use computer control on the power systems without having it hooked up to the internet. You can have internet on Admin computers which are separate and not connected to the network which operates the equipment. Has no one thought of this?

The BAD news is that all of these stories were first shown two years ago. The risk is much higher today and little has been accomplished to stop it. Our power system is not hardened and anything including solar flares from the sun can take it down.

This seems timely, given the CrowdStrike incident yesterday. If even the security companies are causing major outages and impacts we need stricter controls, frankly.

One way to make ransomware into a non problem is by taking all critical systems off line. Air gapped systems are exponentially harder to hack than on line systems. Really critical systems can be designed with ROM based hardware that cannot be hacked because they are not capable or receiving new information or changing their software, because it is literally "burned in." Critical infrastructure can be connected over high tension lines instead of the internet. Anyone attempting to hack such systems would need a thorough knowledge of high voltage lines to tap in remotely, and they would need to exchange ROM or PROM chips instead of remotely hacking via the web. While every system has its vulnerabilities, air gapped, ROM or PROM backed, and non internet connected systems are far superior from a security standpoint then standard internet based systems.
Why aren’t there redundancy protective backup systems or manual override systems for critical infrastructure? And, I don’t want to hear that it costs too much, either!

This is a great piece. The one thing i’ll say is this however. It’s funny to me how five eyes has been spying and stealing intellectually data for decades, and they’ve been the best at it. But as soon as someone else comes along and is better at it than they are, all of a sudden it’s morally wrong. All of a sudden it’s time to start “acting like a leading country” and not doing the shenanigans. It’s just funny to me they hypocrisy. Look this is just a game. The game of life. This has been an idea for decades, since the infancy of the internet. It's not a novel idea and you're not clever. They have recruited felons and people who have been caught for misdemeanors in these types of crimes for decades. It's not done at large scale and it's a complicated matter as well. Current administration is not blocking anything, the agencies have had the ability to do it the whole time. The agencies are run by civil servants and not political appointees with a few exceptions at the very top in a few of these agencies. It boils down to recruitment culture and not executive action. Also, you can't just hire all those you come across either. Then agencies would just become bloated and people would do BS jobs. You can only manage a certain amount of people and organize tasks in certain ways. Can't have a free-for-all and let anyone do anything at any time because then it would just be chaos.

Meanwhile us in cyber are overworked and underpaid and its a nightmare to find a job. Im lucky enough to have a solid job even if underpaid, but i have friends that are incredible with 10 to 15 years of experience in infosec that cannot get an interview. Alot of these companies dont care about cyber risk. They look at it as a cost center and often ignore what the consequences of a breach could be.

One way to make ransomware into a non problem is by taking all critical systems off line. Air gapped systems are exponentially harder to hack than on line systems. Really critical systems can be designed with ROM based hardware that cannot be hacked because they are not capable or receiving new information or changing their software, because it is literally "burned in." Critical infrastructure can be connected over high tension lines instead of the internet. Anyone attempting to hack such systems would need a thorough knowledge of high voltage lines to tap in remotely, and they would need to exchange ROM or PROM chips instead of remotely hacking via the web. While every system has its vulnerabilities, air gapped, ROM or PROM backed, and non internet connected systems are far superior from a security standpoint then standard internet based systems.
Why aren’t there redundancy protective backup systems or manual override systems for critical infrastructure? And, I don’t want to hear that it costs too much, either!

The reason that most of the Electric Grid in Texas is NOT attached to either of the 2 major Grids is money. There are minimum requirements in hardware and backups that they do not have to comply with, it would cut into their profits to upgrade their their existing system.

This is a great piece. The one thing i’ll say is this however. It’s funny to me how five eyes has been spying and stealing intellectually data for decades, and they’ve been the best at it. But as soon as someone else comes along and is better at it than they are, all of a sudden it’s morally wrong. All of a sudden it’s time to start “acting like a leading country” and not doing the shenanigans. It’s just funny to me they hypocrisy. Look this is just a game. The game of life. This has been an idea for decades, since the infancy of the internet. It's not a novel idea and you're not clever. They have recruited felons and people who have been caught for misdemeanors in these types of crimes for decades. It's not done at large scale and it's a complicated matter as well. Current administration is not blocking anything, the agencies have had the ability to do it the whole time. The agencies are run by civil servants and not political appointees with a few exceptions at the very top in a few of these agencies.
It boils down to recruitment culture and not executive action. Also, you can't just hire all those you come across either. Then agencies would just become bloated and people would do BS jobs. You can only manage a certain amount of people and organize tasks in certain ways. Can't have a free-for-all and let anyone do anything at any time because then it would just be chaos.
