Then we have Todo analyze Hanami's abilities, list off all of them, and even consider that they might all be bluffs while he himself bluffs her with his ability explanation. The thing I like about cursed energy (besides the strategy being frankly way more fun) is how specialized the sorcerers are. With chakra, most ninja fight the same with the main difference being a kekkei genkai or chakra nature. Even if you have a special kekkei genkai or chakra nature, they rarely affect how the ninja fights too much. However jujutsu sorcerers entire fighting style revolves around their cursed techniques, and in the case of Yuji, revolves around how he combats complicated cursed techniques with a simple moveset. It’s fascinating watching any 2 sorcerers fight because there’s potentially limitless ways it can go while with ninja, it’s not the same every time, but theres just so much less emphasis on unique abilities.
I agree but I don't think its down to chakra rather the techniques used from it was neglected in exchange for "Cool power move" Chidori, Rasengan, Susano. They were on the right track in Naruto part 1 where you'd get more technical all of the students were very different with unique abilities past down from their parents or teachers. I think JJK was limited with how much a character could learn. Yes you can get RCT DE but they're quite rare and often locked to your technique anyway. In Naruto if a certain technique didn't work you could use a way more than that like Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and Genjutsu. Unless your Lee but he could still use weapons, kunai for example.
You're acting like every shinobi in Naruto has the exact same arsenal though. Just like cursed techniques, the vast majority of clans in Naruto have their own unique jutsu, and the shinobi of those clans revolve their entire fighting style around those jutsus. Not every person in the series is using the Rasengan or the Shadow Clone Jutsu, each and every character has their own signature techniques which they use in combat. Just take Shikamaru's fight against Temari, who both have completely different fighting styles, due to the jutsu they specialize in.

Later on tho the amount of chakra you had = big attack the unique side started to matter less. the unique side didn't matter as much as you could output. Take Madaras Majestic Flame for example. To me is just a super amped fireball jutsu against the alliance. It's also just cause of his amount of chakra instead of "Unique Technique" Yamato has hashirama cells and can use "Wood style" which was no where near as Offensively potent as hashirama simply because of the chakra amount.
@@afro025 True, but even then their applications are largely the same and specialists are rarely used creatively. For example, take Rock Lee and compare him with Toji. Toji constantly uses his enhanced physical capabilities and invisible man status very creatively by hiding cursed tools and mixing them with deadly regular weaponry. Rock Lee is largely hand to hand, which is fine, but it’s also interesting how he doesn’t quickly turn on one or two gates to throw a kunai at a far faster speed than the opponent expects and mortally wound the enemy. Quick applications of 2 gates within combat to slow down and speed up to keep the opponent on edge, with the main weaknesses being sharingan users being able to adjust to it fairly easily. Just by applying a bit of creativity, Naruto could have used its world and power system in far more strategic ways. Especially if you combine poisons with kunai and treat them as actual threats past the first arc.

Firstly, the example you use is between two characters that can't even use cursed energy or chakra, so saying that "Toji is more creative" doesn't mean that cursed energy is a more creative power system than chakra. Secondly, we see in his fight against Gaara he tries throwing kunai and shuriken at him with his immense strength, but his sand blocks all of it, not to mention Gaara's sand armor on his skin make kunai and shuriken completely useless against him. And thirdly, that's not how the gates work. It's not something Rock Lee can pop open in a second and then turn it off. Naruto's world and power system already has tons of creativity in it, with characters using chakra in such creative ways. Naruto's entire plan against Zabuza with how he transforms into a shuriken, and has Sasuke disguise it under the shadow of another shuriken, in order to break Kakashi out of the water prison is such an ingenuous use of chakra, and this is only the tip of the iceburg. Throughout the Chunin Exams we see so many unique uses for character's jutsus that don't involve nature releases or kekkai genkais. Shino using his bugs to clog up Zaku's arms, so that when he uses his sound jutsu it just blows off his arms, or Shikamaru using the terrain around him and his shadow paralysis jutsu to incapacitate Kin, without even landing a finger on her. These are all strategic and creative uses of their jutsu that don't involve "I'm stronger than you so I win", and shows the versatility of chakra as a power system.
I like how in jjk it’s not about how much CE u have but more about how efficient u are with it. In Naruto it often feels like ppl have infinite chakra especially in shippuden. It rarely becomes a problem. everyone was literally fighting in a war for multiple days with barely any breaks. it takes away the point of having an “energy” source. Compared to jjks final fight which is a few hours, which is in line with how long these characters should last to the power system. even if u have relatively a lot of CE u have to be efficient with it and that’s the skill gap in jjk. Because u are forced to be efficient with CE the burden of skill is placed on hand to hand combat a lot more. This is basically how it was in OG Naruto. U can only use that “special move” once or twice before ur physically fried. Throughout jjk, even if ur in the top 10 u can only pop maybe 1 or 2 domains max in a day and that’s pushing it (unless ur sukuna or gojo of course) so u have to take hand 2 hand way more seriously and use those special moves less sparingly. And forget domains, even some regular CT’s are like that too.
Tbf most people in the War-Arc were getting replenished by Naruto. Its not like all of them had limitless stamina, one person has it and shares it with the rest. Regardless the War-arc still buffed everyone in terms of endurance. Honestly the top 4 characters in JJK seems to have near limitless stamina(although that is to be expected), ofc unless they spam Domains (save for 1 guy) and domains themselves tend to be Really strong finisher moves so it makes sense(Naruto's finisher move by EOS also drains him completely). But I'd agree with you on the h2h aspect... Its very cool that even at the highest level with incredible RCT usage, hand to hand ends up being so monumental in combat. I never could've guessed how impactful h2h was going to be in a fight at the highest level once I learned of Domains and how OP they can be..
Chakra is made of two components: mental and physical energy. Your chakra lasts as long as you can kneed your two energies to make chakra. In a war, you are amped on adrenaline, meaning you may have more energy than usual. Not to mention, actual wars are fought over months or even years, and they slept during the war, allowing them to refresh their energy to make more chakra. Your critique of the chakra during the war arc is a little off.

I think you guys missed the main point and making excuses. There's no doubt that CE requires you to be more efficient compared to chakra. As even the hax abilities once mastered has huge drawbacks. Black flashes are extremely iffy and Gojo literally fried his brain to recover CE and was even more exhausted. Chakra only has a drawback if you're performing jutsu that plays with life or death which is extremely rare. Other than that you can literally simply pop a med or in Choji case eat a f*cking burger and regain the physical and spiritual energy to create more chakra and delete the I need sleep feeling.
Yeah I completely agree. Without domain expansions, I don't think people would be as interested in cursed energy as a power system. It'd just be considered a knockoff of Nen or smth

@@CJ-qv4sd Now on another point, how many fights did jjk have that did not revolve around domain expansion? let's see, we have most of the fights in the beginning of the story, goodwill event didn't have any, more then half of shibuya, hidden inventory, yuji's execution arc, culling games arc had more then enough fights that had many outcomes that lead to fighters that did have domain expansions use other abilities outside of it, sukuna vs gojo had many aspects in the fight outside of domain expansion, and the final fight we had with the sukuna cycle had many different aspects of the power system all collide, included but not limited to domain expansions. Heck jjk 0 didn't even have domain expantion even in concept when it was written, this arc was fire. CE has alot more to offer other then just domain expansion and most readers are all for it, after its way more enjoyable then the disappointment alot of naruto fans had to suffer with how some characters got their powerups in the war arc. I do not mind if someone might not like jjk as a series or prefers other power systems instead of CE, I'm actually quite for it, but there's a whole new level of disconnect you get when you see someone say that CE has nothing to offer without domain expansion.
I think I like chakra more because the characters in Naruto can just learn powerful jutsu or make their own to get stronger and they can have different types of moves in their arsenal. In JJK a ton is determined by ur innate CT and CE amount which u can't really change. I love domain expansion and the various techniques to counter it tho and RCT is also super cool.
I like the way JJK handles basic physical strength and speed buffs from cursed energy, mostly because you’re given clear ways to increase it during a battle and you can become someone extremely notable without having a technique
Considering binding vows absolutely break the system and the consequences of breaking a binding vow were never shown, I think it’s safe to say cursed energy was a failed nen ripoff
Chakra would be my favorite power system if half its rules didn’t get abandoned. So many aspects of it just got forgotten about like hand signs, genjutsu, elemental weakness, even ninjutsu for a while became useless because of all the absorption.
I like chakra because its so widely available vs Cursed Energy. You can go to any village and enroll in a school. There’s whole libraries with the history of jutsu (that are available to the public). My issue with Cursed Energy is that unless you’re part of that top %1 of sorcersors you are kinda hosed in that verse. You aint gonna get Gojo as a teacher or have Yuta as a companion. So with all being equal, I just like Chakra better.
You either love or hate the One Piece Power System. It has like 4-5 different methods for characters to gain power which all have little to nothing to do with each other, but most people just focus on the Haki.
Cursed energy pretty much just an energy that can be used to get a black flash or do a binding vow to amp a cursed technique, but without a technique you basically only have simple domain, cursed energy punches, RCT, domain amp. Chakra because of its ability to be used without a bloodline based ability, has more applications than cursed energy. We see tobirama who didn't have a unique inherited style just straight up copy some of his brother's abilities like the wood clone, he named his into a shadow clone. He was also able to revive the dead.
CE is more entertaining on a moment to moment basis, but it does this by being vague and somewhat random. It works more as a writing tool to let gege create surprising moments or complicated power interactions with binding vows, or the basically random personal abilities. But chakra is actually explained fully? Almost every ability, with maybe the exception of some of the late shippuden hax abilities or whatever the fuck is going on in boruto (idk idc), can be explained by the chakra rules given to the reader. It also functions as a part of narutos worldbuilding, whjch ce kinda does with the whole negative energy becomes ce, and then cursed spirits, but i think naruto uses it better in this regard if only because naruto actually has a world to build. Chakra feels like a facet of the world naruto takes place in, while ce feels like a shonen powersystem designed to make interesting fights. Its just different. I personally think chakra is better, since its far better implemented into the series world, and does a far better job being an actually explained system, while ce in jjk is basically a bunch of ideas slammed together that only gets expanded upon when gege needs to, leaving him open to make stuff up when he wants. Really the only thing in jjk i think is actually really cool is domains and rct, which are actually connected to the base elements of the system and are consistent. Mostly. Kinda. Well rct is. Stuff like the hand signs and chanting sound cool, but they just sorta happen. Black flashes look cool, but they just sorta happen. They are explained post hoc, which i think is kinda sloppy writing, especially black flashes being literally random crits in tf2, its so lame idk how ppl get hype for it. Like they didnt do anything! Gege just decided they could win now! Its so lame. And yeah, individual ces in jjk makes for more complicated fights (sometimes, actually not that much), when you compare to other complicated-individual-powers shonen systems like stands in jojo or nen abilities in hxh, jjk does a much worse job justifying the uniqueness of each ability, or even just explaining the rules of the abilities. Most people still dont understand the way the ten shadows fusions work, when its one of the most important ces in the story. In jojo stands are just as if not more random, but the series actually utilizes that to make the fights all about strategy and figuring out each others abilities, while jjk uses binding vows (aka geges writing cheat code) to justify having the characters explain their abilities, to avoid as much of that as possible. I dont even have to get into hxh, we all know its power system is goated as far as actually justifying and explaining some of the most random abilities ever. Like sure, jjk is more unique than naruto in this regard, but at least naruto is able to fully quantify its simpler system. Tbh i think its kinda silly that you basically give jjk the dub for being more unique, and give naruto props for combat? Which was surprising to me. Narutos system should get props for being an actual system tbh. Jjks system is only unique when compared to naruto; its a mishmash of various elements from other shonen systems, which is fine, but not actually all that unique. Domains are like the closest it gets. Actually idk if any other shonen has dared to put random crits (black flashes) in its story, but im not sure thats an advantage for jjk.
I guess i should also say that i do think jjks system is more efficiently constructed to create clickbait/hype moments? And theres a real argument that its the better system from the perspective of a shonen writer, since it allows gege to have basically whatever he wants to happen happen and easily create "hype" with stupid shit like black flashes. However personally i think narutos system is better as a power system in a vacuum. To illustrate; imagine if you had access to chakra, just like a naruto character. You immediately know what consequences that could have, since narutos system is more fully explained and explored, with only a few elements being up to chance (like what nature you have, or your personal chakra quantity, which can still be effected by training). Now if you imagine having cursed energy like jjk, its totally different. You know what abilities you could theoretically gain access to, ces, des, etc, but what those abilities might actually be is random, so outside of like rct and amping, theres no real system to aquiring abilities or determining what abilities an individual might have access to.

I grew up watching the Naruto series and will always love it's power system. But curse energy reminds me of HXH power system Nen. Mostly how different everyone's nen abilities are. Cause everyone has something different and unique. Plus how strategic you can be with curse energy. Naruto started off with being strategic then later on became power focused. But it's interesting if you ask me.
Cursed energy kinda clears, it’s just more unique with a lot of stuff that comes with it, it’s not even complex either. And the total amount of cursed energy you have isn’t everything as long as you are efficient with it.
As far as rating power systems, I prefer ones that lean more into univerally learnable aspects, than those than lean into unique abilities, because the the former is more like, you know, a system, while the latter is more like a superpower lottery. Nen is sort of the only one that found a happy marriage of those two concepts, since it's very focused on individual techniques, except these techniques are (mostly, damn you specialization) made from scratch by the characters from the invidual components of the system that we were given an understanding of first.

In my opinion chakra is heavily underutilised many characters would be powerful if they take advantage it for example a kekei genkai is a combo of 2 natures like wind and water make ice ...characters like haku dont need water or wind to make ice they just have it.. but others who have both elements should be able to mimic basic uses of the application...the most recent example is sasuke vs the dinosaur he doesn't have ice release yet he can still make it using water and air.....idk i think thats one reason chakra is often forgotten or disregarded although it has limitless potential
I think its possible but only for basic cases. like you could replicate ice or lava since that's simple but you wouldnt be able to replicate wood or magnet style. also pretty sure trying to replace the combinations would require extreme chakra control which I kinda doubt most people would have.
From what's understood you need a godlike level of Chakra control + understanding of chakra natures, in order to seamlessly combine 2 chakra natures to essentially mimic Kekkei Genkai to that level. Sasuke was likely capable of doing that because he had possesed a Rinnegan back then. (Since the Rinnegan does influence your potential for mastery over chakra natures). Its sort of like Six Eyes relation with Limitless. CE Control at an atomic level. Although I do think there should be a way to impart knowledge/abilities like that on Non-Rinnegan/Universal Comprehension users.

I think Kishimoto tried keep the core abilities of his main cast simple to keep Naruto accessible - apart from Yuji, Gege tended to enjoy making more complex abilities and just assumed the audience would keep up
i think both jjk and naruto use reincarnation as a means of strength pretty similarly. put simply, by having a strong being reincarnate and use their power through your body, you effectively gain immense strength at the cost of loss of control. sukuna and yuji, boruto and momoshiki.

I know you mainly cover Naruto and JJK, but it'd be cool to see a comparison between Cursed Energy and other systems like Nen, Stands, Zanpakuto, etc as far as how they serve as reflections of the characters themselves. For newer shounen: I think JJK stands out as doing this particularly well. Edit: I do think Naruto has some instances of this, but less direct. Like I think Itachi's heavy usage of genjutsu is a reflection of his true nature as a pacifist.
Best power system ever is still stands but chakra and cursed energy are up there with nen and alchemy too (would say quirks but it's like a watered-down version of stands) or even limiters in OPM. I like how well balanced chakra generally is but also like how cursed energy is more user-specific. Chakra CAN be user-specific but typically isn't. Case in point, everyone has their natural chakra affinity but someone like Sasuke, cause of him being an Uchiha has multiple natural affinities being fire and lightning. This also doesn't mean he can't and doesn't master more just that his strongest attacks are going to more so be fire and lightning release attacks. I like that this gives versatility but also cause it isn't user specific, things that once had high importance to clan or user specific techniques now aren't. Then again, I guess having an alien race create all the jutsu cause it's derived from the god of that alien race and his divine abilities would change how one can view the power system. I still like chakra though
im going to comment now and have future me comment on how wrong i probably am later but from the outset, Chakra was versitile in the beginning of naruto and it unfortunetely had to deal with the added weight of having more shit bolted onto it as the series continued. jjk on the other hand feels a lot simpler. like chakra anyone can use it but unlike chakra, a vast majority of the techniques are personalized which makes it better since you can add whatever character/ability you want and it won't clog up the fundementals with things that fundamentally change how the system works, like yin and yang release
Also, people with Hashirama cells are definitely more common than Reverse curse energy. Kabuto, Orochimaru, Naruto, Obito, Madara, Mitsuki and all his clones, all Shin Uchiha clones probably got that one too.

The fact Gege had to interrupt the final fight with Sukana time after time after time to explain how this character was able to suddenly do this thing, is a good example of his sloppy writing when it comes to the power system. CE allows for more hype moments on a week to week schedule, but Gege also just adds a lot of things which doesn't feel connected to what cursed energy is as a power system, just to shake things up and be interesting.
Chakra and it's not even close. JJK contradicts its own power system every single fight past the 2nd arc of the manga lmao. It is also so ambiguous but not in a cool way, the restrictions are never explained so characters can infinitely break the rules of their power system with next to no explanation JJK is the unfortunate case of live long enough to see yourself become a disgruntled mangaka P.S JJK power system has more in common with my hero academia quirks then people like to admit
Having only seen the anime JJK never explained the basics enough to be more than, I am more op than your for reason xy. It made the later half of season 2 just one big nonstop fighting montage without any kind of power scaling rules. That super powerful curse everyone is hyped about? No idea why I should be hyped. It is cool animation, but nothing really has much meaning. No world building, no build up. I got bored by the best animated anime fight of the season... That hasn't happened in all of Bleach or Fairy Tail.

For example he could make a domain of the size of Konoha but only having it open for a few seconds, or he could simply not apply cleave (which targets only subjects with CE). It may be a stretch, but IMO I think he could pull it off
I read a lot of fanfiction and to me Chakra is the better system because it allows every character with it to do more and even though Shippuden power scaling kind of ruined some nuances with its system, there are plenty of ways to still make fights interesting and tactical like with Kakashi vs Zabuza. I think CE is interesting but I think the control of elements, possible kekkai genkai and tota and things like genjutsu and fuinjutsu and stuff that it's more diverse
I like jjk more in theory while i feel more content with Naruto in practice. Jjk could've cooked a lot more many of its ideas but they just didn't, it was played too long with the idea/fact most sorcerers are low level so we straight up didn't see much of domains, RCT, long fights, binding vows, even cursed techniques were a bit wild because some effectively didn't have one, like Hakari had a domain and that's his whole schtick or Takaba had an insane CT that was more wild than any domain.... but i mean generally we just missed out on too much potential content just to be proven a point that now i can say wasn't worth to go on for so long. Naruto also ditched a lot of its potential, strategy was a lot more involved, ninja tools, elemental advantage, common extremely useful jujutsus, a lot of things that were neglected too because they were too good and story breaking or just literally wasted, tho for the purposes of this topic, energy system wise i think chakra held up fine, it didn't had anything unrealized for itself, so I'm content with the result

Chakra is way better in my opinion. With JJK the power system is just martial arts and their technique for 95% of the cast. Very FEW are lucky enough to get a domain or a special weapon or something. Chakra is a way more unique power system because everyone has access to a multitude of techniques if they work hard enough. The result is most ninja have MULTIPLE cool abilities. A fodder ass dude like Asuma can have cool chakra blades, wind style AND fire style with smoke. Nanami is one of the MAIN characters for like half the manga and he’s just a nigga with a saw. Sukuna can slash and shoot fire at the end of the day. Jiraiya and Hiruzen got bigger bags than all of JJK.
My problem with CE that it’s a power almost limited to one group of people (Japanese) whereas Chakra is something that anyone can use they learn; like ki in Dragon Ball.

The second Nanami said that explaining your ability to your opponent made it stronger, I was sold on the power system. Then we have Todo analyze Hanami's abilities, list off all of them, and even consider that they might all be bluffs while he himself bluffs her with his ability explanation. The thing I like about cursed energy (besides the strategy being frankly way more fun) is how specialized the sorcerers are. With chakra, most ninja fight the same with the main difference being a kekkei genkai or chakra nature. Even if you have a special kekkei genkai or chakra nature, they rarely affect how the ninja fights too much.
However jujutsu sorcerers entire fighting style revolves around their cursed techniques, and in the case of Yuji, revolves around how he combats complicated cursed techniques with a simple moveset. It’s fascinating watching any 2 sorcerers fight because there’s potentially limitless ways it can go while with ninja, it’s not the same every time, but theres just so much less emphasis on unique abilities.
I agree but I don't think its down to chakra rather the techniques used from it was neglected in exchange for "Cool power move" Chidori, Rasengan, Susano.
They were on the right track in Naruto part 1 where you'd get more technical all of the students were very different with unique abilities past down from their parents or teachers.
I think JJK was limited with how much a character could learn. Yes you can get RCT DE but they're quite rare and often locked to your technique anyway.
In Naruto if a certain technique didn't work you could use a way more than that like Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and Genjutsu. Unless your Lee but he could still use weapons, kunai for example.
You're acting like every shinobi in Naruto has the exact same arsenal though. Just like cursed techniques, the vast majority of clans in Naruto have their own unique jutsu, and the shinobi of those clans revolve their entire fighting style around those jutsus. Not every person in the series is using the Rasengan or the Shadow Clone Jutsu, each and every character has their own signature techniques which they use in combat. Just take Shikamaru's fight against Temari, who both have completely different fighting styles, due to the jutsu they specialize in.

Yamato has hashirama cells and can use "Wood style" which was no where near as Offensively potent as hashirama simply because of the chakra amount.

Toji constantly uses his enhanced physical capabilities and invisible man status very creatively by hiding cursed tools and mixing them with deadly regular weaponry. Rock Lee is largely hand to hand, which is fine, but it’s also interesting how he doesn’t quickly turn on one or two gates to throw a kunai at a far faster speed than the opponent expects and mortally wound the enemy. Quick applications of 2 gates within combat to slow down and speed up to keep the opponent on edge, with the main weaknesses being sharingan users being able to adjust to it fairly easily. Just by applying a bit of creativity, Naruto could have used its world and power system in far more strategic ways. Especially if you combine poisons with kunai and treat them as actual threats past the first arc.

Firstly, the example you use is between two characters that can't even use cursed energy or chakra, so saying that "Toji is more creative" doesn't mean that cursed energy is a more creative power system than chakra. Secondly, we see in his fight against Gaara he tries throwing kunai and shuriken at him with his immense strength, but his sand blocks all of it, not to mention Gaara's sand armor on his skin make kunai and shuriken completely useless against him. And thirdly, that's not how the gates work. It's not something Rock Lee can pop open in a second and then turn it off.
Naruto's world and power system already has tons of creativity in it, with characters using chakra in such creative ways. Naruto's entire plan against Zabuza with how he transforms into a shuriken, and has Sasuke disguise it under the shadow of another shuriken, in order to break Kakashi out of the water prison is such an ingenuous use of chakra, and this is only the tip of the iceburg.
Throughout the Chunin Exams we see so many unique uses for character's jutsus that don't involve nature releases or kekkai genkais. Shino using his bugs to clog up Zaku's arms, so that when he uses his sound jutsu it just blows off his arms, or Shikamaru using the terrain around him and his shadow paralysis jutsu to incapacitate Kin, without even landing a finger on her. These are all strategic and creative uses of their jutsu that don't involve "I'm stronger than you so I win", and shows the versatility of chakra as a power system.
I like how in jjk it’s not about how much CE u have but more about how efficient u are with it. In Naruto it often feels like ppl have infinite chakra especially in shippuden. It rarely becomes a problem. everyone was literally fighting in a war for multiple days with barely any breaks. it takes away the point of having an “energy” source. Compared to jjks final fight which is a few hours, which is in line with how long these characters should last to the power system. even if u have relatively a lot of CE u have to be efficient with it and that’s the skill gap in jjk. Because u are forced to be efficient with CE the burden of skill is placed on hand to hand combat a lot more. This is basically how it was in OG Naruto. U can only use that “special move” once or twice before ur physically fried. Throughout jjk, even if ur in the top 10 u can only pop maybe 1 or 2 domains max in a day and that’s pushing it (unless ur sukuna or gojo of course) so u have to take hand 2 hand way more seriously and use those special moves less sparingly. And forget domains, even some regular CT’s are like that too.
Tbf most people in the War-Arc were getting replenished by Naruto. Its not like all of them had limitless stamina, one person has it and shares it with the rest.
Regardless the War-arc still buffed everyone in terms of endurance.
Honestly the top 4 characters in JJK seems to have near limitless stamina(although that is to be expected), ofc unless they spam Domains (save for 1 guy) and domains themselves tend to be Really strong finisher moves so it makes sense(Naruto's finisher move by EOS also drains him completely).
But I'd agree with you on the h2h aspect... Its very cool that even at the highest level with incredible RCT usage, hand to hand ends up being so monumental in combat.

Your chakra lasts as long as you can kneed your two energies to make chakra. In a war, you are amped on adrenaline, meaning you may have more energy than usual. Not to mention, actual wars are fought over months or even years, and they slept during the war, allowing them to refresh their energy to make more chakra.

I think you guys missed the main point and making excuses. There's no doubt that CE requires you to be more efficient compared to chakra. As even the hax abilities once mastered has huge drawbacks. Black flashes are extremely iffy and Gojo literally fried his brain to recover CE and was even more exhausted. Chakra only has a drawback if you're performing jutsu that plays with life or death which is extremely rare. Other than that you can literally simply pop a med or in Choji case eat a f*cking burger and regain the physical and spiritual energy to create more chakra and delete the I need sleep feeling.

Heck jjk 0 didn't even have domain expantion even in concept when it was written, this arc was fire. CE has alot more to offer other then just domain expansion and most readers are all for it, after its way more enjoyable then the disappointment alot of naruto fans had to suffer with how some characters got their powerups in the war arc. I do not mind if someone might not like jjk as a series or prefers other power systems instead of CE, I'm actually quite for it, but there's a whole new level of disconnect you get when you see someone say that CE has nothing to offer without domain expansion.
I think I like chakra more because the characters in Naruto can just learn powerful jutsu or make their own to get stronger and they can have different types of moves in their arsenal.

It's easily Cursed Energy, one of the best power systems. It's heavily inspired on the best shonen manga power system, Nen from Hunter x Hunter.
Chakra would be my favorite power system if half its rules didn’t get abandoned. So many aspects of it just got forgotten about like hand signs, genjutsu, elemental weakness, even ninjutsu for a while became useless because of all the absorption.

I like chakra because its so widely available vs Cursed Energy. You can go to any village and enroll in a school. There’s whole libraries with the history of jutsu (that are available to the public). My issue with Cursed Energy is that unless you’re part of that top %1 of sorcersors you are kinda hosed in that verse. You aint gonna get Gojo as a teacher or have Yuta as a companion.
So with all being equal, I just like Chakra better.

Cursed energy pretty much just an energy that can be used to get a black flash or do a binding vow to amp a cursed technique, but without a technique you basically only have simple domain, cursed energy punches, RCT, domain amp.
Chakra because of its ability to be used without a bloodline based ability, has more applications than cursed energy. We see tobirama who didn't have a unique inherited style just straight up copy some of his brother's abilities like the wood clone, he named his into a shadow clone. He was also able to revive the dead.
CE is more entertaining on a moment to moment basis, but it does this by being vague and somewhat random. It works more as a writing tool to let gege create surprising moments or complicated power interactions with binding vows, or the basically random personal abilities. But chakra is actually explained fully? Almost every ability, with maybe the exception of some of the late shippuden hax abilities or whatever the fuck is going on in boruto (idk idc), can be explained by the chakra rules given to the reader. It also functions as a part of narutos worldbuilding, whjch ce kinda does with the whole negative energy becomes ce, and then cursed spirits, but i think naruto uses it better in this regard if only because naruto actually has a world to build. Chakra feels like a facet of the world naruto takes place in, while ce feels like a shonen powersystem designed to make interesting fights. Its just different. I personally think chakra is better, since its far better implemented into the series world, and does a far better job being an actually explained system, while ce in jjk is basically a bunch of ideas slammed together that only gets expanded upon when gege needs to, leaving him open to make stuff up when he wants. Really the only thing in jjk i think is actually really cool is domains and rct, which are actually connected to the base elements of the system and are consistent. Mostly. Kinda. Well rct is. Stuff like the hand signs and chanting sound cool, but they just sorta happen. Black flashes look cool, but they just sorta happen. They are explained post hoc, which i think is kinda sloppy writing, especially black flashes being literally random crits in tf2, its so lame idk how ppl get hype for it. Like they didnt do anything! Gege just decided they could win now! Its so lame. And yeah, individual ces in jjk makes for more complicated fights (sometimes, actually not that much), when you compare to other complicated-individual-powers shonen systems like stands in jojo or nen abilities in hxh, jjk does a much worse job justifying the uniqueness of each ability, or even just explaining the rules of the abilities. Most people still dont understand the way the ten shadows fusions work, when its one of the most important ces in the story. In jojo stands are just as if not more random, but the series actually utilizes that to make the fights all about strategy and figuring out each others abilities, while jjk uses binding vows (aka geges writing cheat code) to justify having the characters explain their abilities, to avoid as much of that as possible. I dont even have to get into hxh, we all know its power system is goated as far as actually justifying and explaining some of the most random abilities ever. Like sure, jjk is more unique than naruto in this regard, but at least naruto is able to fully quantify its simpler system.

Narutos system should get props for being an actual system tbh. Jjks system is only unique when compared to naruto; its a mishmash of various elements from other shonen systems, which is fine, but not actually all that unique. Domains are like the closest it gets. Actually idk if any other shonen has dared to put random crits (black flashes) in its story, but im not sure thats an advantage for jjk.
I guess i should also say that i do think jjks system is more efficiently constructed to create clickbait/hype moments? And theres a real argument that its the better system from the perspective of a shonen writer, since it allows gege to have basically whatever he wants to happen happen and easily create "hype" with stupid shit like black flashes. However personally i think narutos system is better as a power system in a vacuum. To illustrate; imagine if you had access to chakra, just like a naruto character. You immediately know what consequences that could have, since narutos system is more fully explained and explored, with only a few elements being up to chance (like what nature you have, or your personal chakra quantity, which can still be effected by training). Now if you imagine having cursed energy like jjk, its totally different. You know what abilities you could theoretically gain access to, ces, des, etc, but what those abilities might actually be is random, so outside of like rct and amping, theres no real system to aquiring abilities or determining what abilities an individual might have access to.

I grew up watching the Naruto series and will always love it's power system. But curse energy reminds me of HXH power system Nen. Mostly how different everyone's nen abilities are. Cause everyone has something different and unique. Plus how strategic you can be with curse energy. Naruto started off with being strategic then later on became power focused. But it's interesting if you ask me.

As far as rating power systems, I prefer ones that lean more into univerally learnable aspects, than those than lean into unique abilities, because the the former is more like, you know, a system, while the latter is more like a superpower lottery. Nen is sort of the only one that found a happy marriage of those two concepts, since it's very focused on individual techniques, except these techniques are (mostly, damn you specialization) made from scratch by the characters from the invidual components of the system that we were given an understanding of first.

In my opinion chakra is heavily underutilised many characters would be powerful if they take advantage it for example a kekei genkai is a combo of 2 natures like wind and water make ice ...characters like haku dont need water or wind to make ice they just have it.. but others who have both elements should be able to mimic basic uses of the application...the most recent example is sasuke vs the dinosaur he doesn't have ice release yet he can still make it using water and air.....idk i think thats one reason chakra is often forgotten or disregarded although it has limitless potential
I think its possible but only for basic cases. like you could replicate ice or lava since that's simple but you wouldnt be able to replicate wood or magnet style. also pretty sure trying to replace the combinations would require extreme chakra control which I kinda doubt most people would have.

From what's understood you need a godlike level of Chakra control + understanding of chakra natures, in order to seamlessly combine 2 chakra natures to essentially mimic Kekkei Genkai to that level.
Sasuke was likely capable of doing that because he had possesed a Rinnegan back then. (Since the Rinnegan does influence your potential for mastery over chakra natures).
Its sort of like Six Eyes relation with Limitless. CE Control at an atomic level.
Although I do think there should be a way to impart knowledge/abilities like that on Non-Rinnegan/Universal Comprehension users.

I think Kishimoto tried keep the core abilities of his main cast simple to keep Naruto accessible - apart from Yuji, Gege tended to enjoy making more complex abilities and just assumed the audience would keep up
i think both jjk and naruto use reincarnation as a means of strength pretty similarly. put simply, by having a strong being reincarnate and use their power through your body, you effectively gain immense strength at the cost of loss of control. sukuna and yuji, boruto and momoshiki.

I know you mainly cover Naruto and JJK, but it'd be cool to see a comparison between Cursed Energy and other systems like Nen, Stands, Zanpakuto, etc as far as how they serve as reflections of the characters themselves.
For newer shounen: I think JJK stands out as doing this particularly well.
Edit: I do think Naruto has some instances of this, but less direct. Like I think Itachi's heavy usage of genjutsu is a reflection of his true nature as a pacifist.
Best power system ever is still stands but chakra and cursed energy are up there with nen and alchemy too (would say quirks but it's like a watered-down version of stands) or even limiters in OPM.
I like how well balanced chakra generally is but also like how cursed energy is more user-specific. Chakra CAN be user-specific but typically isn't. Case in point, everyone has their natural chakra affinity but someone like Sasuke, cause of him being an Uchiha has multiple natural affinities being fire and lightning. This also doesn't mean he can't and doesn't master more just that his strongest attacks are going to more so be fire and lightning release attacks. I like that this gives versatility but also cause it isn't user specific, things that once had high importance to clan or user specific techniques now aren't. Then again, I guess having an alien race create all the jutsu cause it's derived from the god of that alien race and his divine abilities would change how one can view the power system. I still like chakra though

im going to comment now and have future me comment on how wrong i probably am later but from the outset, Chakra was versitile in the beginning of naruto and it unfortunetely had to deal with the added weight of having more shit bolted onto it as the series continued. jjk on the other hand feels a lot simpler. like chakra anyone can use it but unlike chakra, a vast majority of the techniques are personalized which makes it better since you can add whatever character/ability you want and it won't clog up the fundementals with things that fundamentally change how the system works, like yin and yang release
Also, people with Hashirama cells are definitely more common than Reverse curse energy. Kabuto, Orochimaru, Naruto, Obito, Madara, Mitsuki and all his clones, all Shin Uchiha clones probably got that one too.

Gotta disagree with you there man. CE is more entertaining on a moment to moment basis, but it does this by being vague and somewhat random. The fact Gege had to interrupt the final fight with Sukana time after time after time to explain how this character was able to suddenly do this thing, is a good example of his sloppy writing when it comes to the power system. CE allows for more hype moments on a week to week schedule, but Gege also just adds a lot of things which doesn't feel connected to what cursed energy is as a power system, just to shake things up and be interesting.

Chakra and it's not even close. JJK contradicts its own power system every single fight past the 2nd arc of the manga lmao. It is also so ambiguous but not in a cool way, the restrictions are never explained so characters can infinitely break the rules of their power system with next to no explanation

Having only seen the anime JJK never explained the basics enough to be more than, I am more op than your for reason xy. It made the later half of season 2 just one big nonstop fighting montage without any kind of power scaling rules. That super powerful curse everyone is hyped about? No idea why I should be hyped. It is cool animation, but nothing really has much meaning. No world building, no build up. I got bored by the best animated anime fight of the season... That hasn't happened in all of Bleach or Fairy Tail.

@@chalbramwell5353 okay, that's fair, but we have information in the manga to imply that Sukuna can change his domain conditions at will, meaning it's not out of the ordinary (tho not stated, I can give you that), that he could simply make a binding vow to increase the area of the domain. For example he could make a domain of the size of Konoha but only having it open for a few seconds, or he could simply not apply cleave (which targets only subjects with CE). It may be a stretch, but IMO I think he could pull it off

I read a lot of fanfiction and to me Chakra is the better system because it allows every character with it to do more and even though Shippuden power scaling kind of ruined some nuances with its system, there are plenty of ways to still make fights interesting and tactical like with Kakashi vs Zabuza. I think CE is interesting but I think the control of elements, possible kekkai genkai and tota and things like genjutsu and fuinjutsu and stuff that it's more diverse

I like jjk more in theory while i feel more content with Naruto in practice. Jjk could've cooked a lot more many of its ideas but they just didn't, it was played too long with the idea/fact most sorcerers are low level so we straight up didn't see much of domains, RCT, long fights, binding vows, even cursed techniques were a bit wild because some effectively didn't have one, like Hakari had a domain and that's his whole schtick or Takaba had an insane CT that was more wild than any domain.... but i mean generally we just missed out on too much potential content just to be proven a point that now i can say wasn't worth to go on for so long. Naruto also ditched a lot of its potential, strategy was a lot more involved, ninja tools, elemental advantage, common extremely useful jujutsus, a lot of things that were neglected too because they were too good and story breaking or just literally wasted, tho for the purposes of this topic, energy system wise i think chakra held up fine, it didn't had anything unrealized for itself, so I'm content with the result

Chakra is way better in my opinion. With JJK the power system is just martial arts and their technique for 95% of the cast. Very FEW are lucky enough to get a domain or a special weapon or something.
Chakra is a way more unique power system because everyone has access to a multitude of techniques if they work hard enough. The result is most ninja have MULTIPLE cool abilities.
A fodder ass dude like Asuma can have cool chakra blades, wind style AND fire style with smoke.
Nanami is one of the MAIN characters for like half the manga and he’s just a nigga with a saw. Sukuna can slash and shoot fire at the end of the day. Jiraiya and Hiruzen got bigger bags than all of JJK.
My problem with CE that it’s a power almost limited to one group of people (Japanese) whereas Chakra is something that anyone can use they learn; like ki in Dragon Ball.
