After being pro rim for many a year, I recently purchased the Emonda SL7 Etap Disc and have probably now made up my mind that even though there is a slight increase in weight, I prefer Discs.....
Been riding Emonda for 2k KM now and have to say...it's a dream to ride on the climbs! Acceleration is also great. Most satisfying bike I've ridden so far.
This one is most sluggish out of all emondas made to date. Bought sl6 pro with upgraded wheels and jeeez feels and weight like a tank in comparison to my rim sl6. For record... Upgraded sl6 pro with pro 37 wheels weight 8.2kg. My stock sl6 from 2019 is 7.8. With upgraded wheels is 7.2kg. For new I paid €4.5k for 2019 paid €2.6k. Tldr New one is waste of money.

By C just because Hambini is a weak cyclist doesn’t mean this is rubbish. The Emonda SLR is a super-high end bike, so it is aimed at the very top end of cyclists. I am not talking world tour, I am talking top level amateurs. 350 Watts at the weight of the average World Tour Pro (68 to 69kg) is an FTP of around 5.1 W/kg. That is a figure, that is absolutely attainable for a young, healthy rider, who commits 10 to 15 hours weekly to structured training over a few years. I have gotten myself to 333 FTP at 70kg within under 18 months of starting cycling. And I am clearly far off being the best amateur rider in my area. If you are not nearly able to perform these figures, it may not be the best idea to purchase a $10,000+ bike and hoping to get the full gain of what was promised. All I am saying is „350 Watts for the duration fo Alpe d’Huez“ is absolutely attainable without needing to be a pro tour cyclist.
I expect a stick, nothing less, nothing more. In fact I can never seem to find as good a stick whenever I want to take a cracking photo of my bike. Perhaps I should carry one with me?
Trek determined the 25mm tires optimized the overall aerodynamics of the wheel set. The frame wheels tires and handlebars were all designed for each other to maximize aerodynamics which is a pretty awesome initiative on the part of trek which is why I am a proud owner of the SLR9
I picked up the Etap version of this bike. I can confirm so much of what was discussed in this video, including time savings over distance. The problem with the presenter was, he was loosing at least 20 watts because of the weight penalty his hair caused.
I just brought this bike in the SL7 version and I love it!!! It by far is the lightest bike I've ridden or owned....Now Im a newbie and this is my first bike of this caliber but I would have to say its a great bike. If it were any lighter I would be amazed even more. This bike has seemed effortless to me in all the riding I have done with it. It ABSOLUTELY makes climbs 100% easier and faster for me. There are things I want to add such as the Wahoo computer but I find myself worrying about increasing the weight... LOL So Im still using Strava as my monitor with my phone. I mean Im going to have my phone on me anyway right? Overall while Im not a racer as some of you may or may not be but I love this bike.. I think its well worth the purchase.
i've bought the 2020 version of Trek Emonda SL5 disc. My first carbon bike. The Aluminium Bontrager wheels are the negative point on this bike. Changed for fulcrum carbon wheels. After this the bike became fun and addictive
Great review and yes love the lockdown hair too. The weight comments are overblown as this is still a light bike and adding aero shapes, T47 BB etc. will impact this. Also its a lot of bike for the money - especially the SL7 with eTap and a power meter for under $6k - amazing!
It is why I can't wait as going to use similar money and make a trek Emonda alr lighter than SL7 though thinking to skip power meter on cranks and wait to buy dual pedals power meters anyway so can use on multiple bikes I have
“Hmmm where should we pose this lightweight, aero, climbing race machine??” “I know! Let’s pose it in its ideal environment, right here on this wet, loose-dirt path perfect for gravel and mountain bikes!” But kudos for working the word “capacious” into a bike review.
that's not how percentages work. If you reduced the weight of a 100kg object by 2%, it will weigh 98kg. But then reduce it again by 2% and youve brought it down to 96.04kg. The first 2% was 2kg. The next one is 1.96. The next one is 1.92. In theory, if you follow this trend infinitely, you would never hit 0. Percentages are weird. And that's why people marketing products like them.
Love the previous generation Emonda and I was hoping this would be just as good but a £3350 "climbing bike" that weighs 8.1kg... erm, no, it's an aero bike.
Because aero trumps weight (you just need to believe all this marketing BS). This is just silly. It weighs substantially more than my aluminum bike for half the price. If it would have a little bit more tire clearance it might be fine gravel bike though...
Heavier, not using the H2 anymore on the SL versions but now using H1.5 which is a more slammed bike (can be good for some people and bad for others), new proprietary fork, back on 52/36 instead of the good enough 50/34 Atleast they are getting away from bb90 :') My gravel build is lighter with bottle cage, pedals, 42mm spe pathfinder and all little accessory (gps/go pro mount, chain catcher) ...
Great bike and interesting move forward overall. However, I have to agree that 25 mm tube tires are just outdated at this point. I also feel strongly that in 2020 it's a total copout to market their climbing oriented bike with a short-cage de-railer. When I take my bike to the mountains (and I do), I'm going for the biggest cassette possible. On my 2016 Emonda it was a pain to have to buy and fit an entirely new rear de-railer in order to put a more climbing oriented cassette on my climbing bike.
I have a 2016 (same level components) and this one caught my eye! Trek gets criticize for price wise but there warrenties are great, they back up a lot and I mean a lot of mishaps, especially on mountain bikes that I know of.
This seems like exactly the same KVF design from a few years ago upgraded with disc. The prices at 33% higher for the SL6 which used to be $2499 for the rim brake and now costs $3299 for this new design with disc brakes. Trek seems to alternate between oval tubes and the aero tube shapes every few years. In addition, all their bikes have gotten heavier with disc brakes. The old Emonda SLR6 to my recollection was 14.75 lbs and was in the $6000 range. I don't think you can find anything that low weight anymore without paying $10k or more.
All the disc brake bikes are!! Because this bloke and the industry are forcing you to buy things that you can’t change or service yourself! The next thing will be subscription to take a lock of it!!🤣
Don't know what Trek has been doing lately, same with their Supercaliber, their 60mm travel XC bike weights more than alot of competitors 100-110mm travel XC bikes & the Supercaliber is expensive as balls compared to others (GX components in 7000USD builds, wtf?), some others give you SRAM AXS builds for that price... And now this Emonda, with 105 components this carbon bike weights over 9kg, same weight as my aluminium fitness bike, and if you want the 7kg bike you will have to put out 12000USD (before tax)...
What aero bike is that? The lightest „full“ Aerobike I know of is the Specialized Venge, and that is heavier than this. Always depends on how you weigh (with pedals, cages, pm, Comp mount or without), the size, and of course the wheel depth. You could build an „aero bike“ with climbing wheels, although I think that misses the point really
I live in a flat area but still considering this bike as an option ( it's on discount in a local store-2859 gbp is the price). Not sure if I should click on it and just order it. I've seen several reviews about things need to be upgraded, wheels on sl6 disc model are quite bad, and cockpit maybe). Hmm.. another option is Canyon cf sl8, the price is close to the one for Trek. All the recommendations are welcome. Nice review btw 🙂
Hahaha this costs more and weighs more than my 2015 Cervelo aero bike. What is Trek playing at asking this much for such a slow bike. This is a £2000 bike at most
The cervelo also has rim brakes, but is no where near as aero or fast. If you haven’t ridden the bike yet, I’d say try it out before giving an opinion!
@@ilikelampshades6 and when looking at a similar priced model for the Emonda, it is over 2 lbs. lighter than the S5. The SL 6 version he has in the video is a mid-tier emonda, so it's not going to be super light-weight
Sadly that's not going to happen. You'll see some brands like Giant and Cannondale still have rim brakes but most of their better bikes are going to be disc.
No surprise the decal is so large, since it is the only real argument to buy the reviewed bike. A Canyon Aeroad with the same groupset is both lighter and more aero, costing about the same... I can understand the appeal of the previous Emonda, but the new one seems to fail ticking any of the boxes in the attempt of ticking them all...
So they "upgraded" old emonda with heaviest BB, disc-only and added crazy clearance. Somehow ended with 8.3 Kilos, and have to claim it will save 18 seconds on a climb, but only if you can sustain 350W for 1 hour.
I'm all for disc brakes, I've had to many close for comfort moments where rim brakes have failed me. Prime example was coming down through Cheddar Gorge and finding that my front brake was more or less dissolved due to the rain earlier in the day. Literally had a panic attack at the bottom of the hill
I'm glad that your review didn't place very much emphasis on the lightweight characteristics of the Emonda. Simply put, the only model in the entire range that is lightweight is the Emonda SLR9. Even the SLR7 is but a whisker shy of 17 lbs when you put on pedals and cages (and that is by Trek's own admission right on their website). In Canada you need to shell out $16500 +tax (assuming they aren't into discounting their just released 2021 models) to get a lightweight bike. Why would it be that the SL7 an $8000 CAD bike that is touted as a "climbing" bike would come with an advertised weight of 17.52 lbs before pedals or cages? That's flat out ridiculous.
Going through the annoying tubeless upgrade on the tires in this exact bike right now. Trek only had one rim strip in stock so I had to order the thing.
@@christopherdavidhall in that case why would you make a climbing bike aero then , the person would purchase a light weight bike only for climbing , than a bike that's neither light or extremely aero
@@christopherdavidhall lol why not? My ftp is aroubd 4.7w/kg and thats not slow, though I can hold 350W just for 7-8 minutes.. 350w for an hour is serious serious stuff.
Nice review. Question about the new Aeolus RSL VR-C cockpit. What length of stem will be available? I run a 130mm with 42mm wide bars and sadly that length has typically not been available in these types of “all in one” cockpits less pros who likely get custom runs. Also had a panic moment (for me watching at least) @ 8:20. I’ve had similar situations where the pedestrian, having seen car go by, quickly think about crossing your path, completely missing you on bike.
I've just had a look in the Emonda press pack and can confirm the cockpit is available in the following sizes. Hope that's helpful! Jack 44X120 44X100 42X120 44X110 42X110 42X100 40X110 42X90 40X100 38X100 40X90 40X80 38X90 38X80
8.13kg for a climber's bike is quite heavy, isn't it? Especially if you add bottle cages and pedals it can easily go up to around 8.4. Even the top tier SLR 7 weighs 7.2kg. Only the SLR 9 breaks the UCI limit to 6.7kg.
Impressive, valuable knowledge for me. Thank you! This will be my first road bike, so I seek your advice on what is the best pedals and other essential accessories excluding lights?
For pedals, if you use clipless right from the get go, you'll steepen your learning curve and you'll fall more frequently than if you go clipless later.
I am sick of fiddling with disc brakes. My next road bike will have rim brakes. Will the T47 solve Trek's ever creaking bottom bracket problem? It depends on how well the frame is constructed. How dimensionally accurate the bottom bracket shell is made. The Edmonda frame is very light, but it lacks pedaling stiffness, pedaling efficiency.
My 2018 Emomda SL5 weighs 9.0kg in 62 cm with SPD pedals and 2 water bottle cages. This is the rim brake version. My LBS swapped the tires to 28mm for a small charge.
@Dont Axeagin there is hope in the newer generations lol! Just kidding. I´m 39 and only started pay more attention to Tlaking Heads a few years ago. The "Stop Making Sense" concert is brilliant!
hiii! is ok for you size 58 for a 1.85m cyclist? the brand recommend 58 between 1.80 to 1.85. New emonda is smaller than the market standards and I think that 58 is similar reach and less distantance between wheelbases than specialized for example in size 56. Thanks in advance.
I would REALLY like to know, while i don't doubt that the disc brake 2021 is faster than the disc brake 2020, is this disc brake 2021 faster than a 2020 rim brake version up the Alpe du huez? What do you think Jack?
LOL, my aluminum Emonda weights 7,85kg and has 105, alu wheels and also SPD pedals ahahah and i'm pretty sure it's MUCH more stiff on any given climb. And cost less then half of the SL PRO 6 ahaahhah

That’s a lot of bunny hop for a climbing bike review 😁
I'm all for disc brakes, I've had to many close for comfort moments where rim brakes have failed me.
Prime example was coming down through Cheddar Gorge and finding that my front brake was more or less dissolved due to the rain earlier in the day. Literally had a panic attack at the bottom of the hill
Of rain "dissolved" a front brake, what was it made of?
@@stevek8829 best way to describe it, they were just standard Ultegra brakepads. To be fair I'd started my ride in Edinburgh
Can you please give more details about why we would have to straight away change the tires if we want to set up the bike tubeless? Thanks
I have the same bike. I am 5.9 and the 52 fits live a glove…. Trek recommends I should be 5.6… so not sure what to think
Going through the annoying tubeless upgrade on the tires in this exact bike right now. Trek only had one rim strip in stock so I had to order the thing.
Gets a lightweight climbing bike, proceeds to put on steel bottle cages.
Thats why we love you
They're titanium, actually 💅😎😎 Thanks for commenting! Jack
Lightweight?
1:25 That bottles lol
Does trek really think the common person can put out 350 watts for an hour
At over 3k it ain't made for the common person 🤷
@@christopherdavidhall in that case why would you make a climbing bike aero then , the person would purchase a light weight bike only for climbing , than a bike that's neither light or extremely aero
@@christopherdavidhall lol why not? My ftp is aroubd 4.7w/kg and thats not slow, though I can hold 350W just for 7-8 minutes.. 350w for an hour is serious serious stuff.
I can, I just need an electric motor to assist me ;)
@@lechprotean they should equip them with tiny motors to achieve those figures
Jack
44X120

BikeRadar thanks.
I love the fact they went with T47. I do not want or need Disc brakes. Rim brakes are just fine for were i live.
Impressive, valuable knowledge for me. Thank you!
This will be my first road bike, so I seek your advice on what is the best pedals and other essential accessories excluding lights?
For pedals, if you use clipless right from the get go, you'll steepen your learning curve and you'll fall more frequently than if you go clipless later.
please, what frame size did you tested? thank you!
I am sick of fiddling with disc brakes. My next road bike will have rim brakes. Will the T47 solve Trek's ever creaking bottom bracket problem? It depends on how well the frame is constructed. How dimensionally accurate the bottom bracket shell is made.
The Edmonda frame is very light, but
it lacks pedaling stiffness, pedaling efficiency.
Have a disc currently. Rim next .
How was the oclv500 vs the oclv800 feel in terms of stiffness and snappiness?
My 2018 Emomda SL5 weighs 9.0kg in 62 cm with SPD pedals and 2 water bottle cages. This is the rim brake version. My LBS swapped the tires to 28mm for a small charge.
If I added up all the aero and weight savings manufacturers claim I'd be saving about a kilowatt by now.
sv8523 hahahhaha
Hi I would like to know if u can change the the handle bar to carbon.
"The David Byrne suite of downtube logos"
Haha, I'm glad someone picked up on that - it's maybe the best thing I have ever written. Thanks for watching! Jack
But think of the aero...
@Dont Axeagin there is hope in the newer generations lol!
Just kidding. I´m 39 and only started pay more attention to Tlaking Heads a few years ago. The "Stop Making Sense" concert is brilliant!
@@bikeradar i thought the use of "capacious" was a pretty good flex
What do you guys think about the SL6 vs Cannondale Supersix Ultegra?
i have the same dilemma
Is the SL OCLV 500 stiff enough for crit racing?
Hmmm, the Emonda SHOULD'NT be any where near 8 kilos..... 😕
Trek really needs to shrink the size of their logos.....The Hubble could see that from space......
Designed for Alp d´huez and with a weight of +8kg?
Really....?
My Cdale Supersix Evo Himod is 6,5kg with Zipp 404....
Great review Jack, what's that saddle bag you're using?
hiii! is ok for you size 58 for a 1.85m cyclist? the brand recommend 58 between 1.80 to 1.85. New emonda is smaller than the market standards and I think that 58 is similar reach and less distantance between wheelbases than specialized for example in size 56. Thanks in advance.
My favorite cycle 👍🚴♂️
Love you BikeRadar.
We love you too, C Mosca! ❣️
It's seem that the SL frame set still stuck with BB90.
Up yours Trek for making it disc only. Goddamnit. 2020 continues to suck.
Good day, what size would be fit im 5'7" (170cm)? Geometry? Is it good for bike touring? Like more on long rides and more climbing? Hope you give me some help about this. Im planning to buy this Trek Emonda SL5
is it isospeed at the headset? the beefier frame and isospeed instantly remind me of domane instead of clean & sleek look like the old emonda..
no isospeed. it's headset and spacers with cables going through
they should have made the logo bigger..
what size frame and what size you?
The madone light😉😁
Would it be possible to do a comparaison of the Trek Emonda Pro SL6 with the Cannondale Supersix EVO (same bracket price)?
Hi.
That model of Emonda SL6 PRO can be passed to electronic, either to Shimano Di2 or SRAM?
Greetings from El Salvador.
Yes.
