The first time I saw an Antigua Strat it was in the hands of Stuart Adamson he was playing it at a Big Country gig at Sefton Park, England in the early 80’s. My first reaction was what is that Strat it looks so good? I’ve been an Antigua fan ever since. Antigua is a bit like Brussels sprouts, you either love them or you loath them. There was a Japanese reissue Antigua Strat that didn’t get the colour right, more a puke green and then a Mexican Strat/Tele reissue around 2014 which was a far more faithful reproduction of the original finish. Looking forward to the latest 70th anniversary Vinteria II version it’s exactly what I’ve been after. A rosewood Antigua hard tail Strat just like Stuart’s.
Don't know how true it is, but I remember reading years ago, that if Gibson employees happened to find a particularly nice guitar, they would stamp it as a second, knowing that it would then be sold at the in house Gibson shop, heavily discounted, where Gibson employees could buy them.
It's better for you that they hate it.......if everyone hated les Paul burst color, those who really wanted an original would be able to get one, today, for much more reasonable money than what they go for now.but of course ppl only want them now as they've been told they should want one. Antigua is cool
Oh, well, here we go again the legendary Bass VI. Something incredible about how well Fender is positioning the Squier brand. As an experiment, I bought a bass from the Paranormal series, which is something amazingly good. I then bought the Esquier, which is punk itself. Then they bring out the Bass VI, finally with a maple neck. The only reason I'm not ordering it right now is in case it gets into some end of year sale because of its weird ugliness. I'm really looking forward to the detailed review, I don't think you can go wrong with this instrument.
I first saw an Antigua burst Strat in a music shop in Shrewsbury, in 1980 (or thereabouts), and didn't like it. I also remember seeing Francis Rossi from Status Quo played an Antigua Tele on TOTP around the same time, and it looked pretty cool. I'd consider one if I was planning to buy a guitar, for purely nostalgic reasons.
Awesome TWIG as always sir. 😎👌 I do love Starcasters with the original maple fretboards and the big shoe headstock - but for a lot of people those 2 things are the only deal breakers. The TD could be a winner! Hope the QC has improved since his sig strat 😬
Love the idea of a single pickup Starcaster but for me I'd need a tone knob. That's half the fun in getting different tones from a single pickup. Clearly some don't have a need but it's definitely a deal breaker for me. Yeah I could add one but what a pain. Cool finishes
I own a '79 Antigua strat...Not something I bought, it was a birthday gift from my bandmates a couple of years ago... It's a great strat and I play it often but that finish just doesn't do it for me 😄😄 I call it "Snot burst" because that's what it looks like to me... But hey, if some people love it good for them 🙂
ANTIGUAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Well, I don't see how someone can find that finish distasteful in any manner. I guess those people haven't seen the finish in person! Very good Darth Vader/James Earl Jones impression reading the TTM names in the end! Do a robotic voice next!
The Fifty Niner is so sexy - but I really don't like the headstock. 599 too much, but there will be a deal some time for sure. I also like the Antigua Burst and don't know why. It's just epic. The Bass VI would be the interesting for me as well.
Earthquaker couldn't put the text in black on the Spatial Delivery? That pedal's hard to read on 75" TV, I can only imagine how hard it's going to be on the floor, let alone a dark stage if playing out. Egad!
Personally, I find the Antigua finish revolting. It looks like coffee spilt on a yellowed linoleum floor. Or the contents of a newborn’s nappy. Very much an acquired taste! 😂
Weirdly enough I had a dream a few months ago where my wife surprised me with a Tele version of the Antigua Burst.. I had never seen that finish before and thought it was something that didn’t exist..Until that is when I saw one pop up on Marketplace..A genuine Fender so pretty pricey.. I’ll definitely be looking at the Strat now they’ve come out in Squier!
Serious question: at this point, do you think Slash himself could simply state HOW MANY “Slash Signature Model” guitars that Gibson and Epiphone have released? Just the total number of MODELS; no details, no sales figures, just how many releases?
Let me get this right: Slash saved Gibson, and in return they gave him a factory second? Anyway, I'm not sure Slash did singlehandedly save Gibson. James Het also played a Gibson Explorer at that exact same time.
I am intrigued that even you, Andy, are ignoring the stealth release of the American Professional II thinline Stratocasters and telecasters. Thought for sure you would at least tease those this week.
@@TheGuitarGeek My bad! I just assume you're completely in the know all the time. I didn't mean to insult in any way. Yeah, these popped up on fender's website and sweetwater & guitar center as well. My sweetwater rep told me there's no embargo, and I keep looking for coverage of them. Cheers!
The Danelectros' tops are a type of pressboard which was commonly used in the first half of the 20th century; think somewhere between cardboard and extremely-thin MDF. That killed my interest in them.
Phil McKnight made an interesting point_ in a very perverse way Gibson (and the market of buyers that seem unfazed by the rising costs as Gibson is still selling quite a few of their guitars) ithe while thing has the effect of propping up the used market. As you in someone bought a LP in the early 2000s they have kept and played are almost certainly guaranteed to get all of their initial investmentt back because all the new Les Paul's will most definitely be more expensive than it was. Regardless of inflation. I am not defending the pricing, but the sad truth is they research and focus group this stuff to death and as long as there are people willing to pay what they're asking they will continue to do so.
I heard the Antigua are only available in Europe, is it true. I’m dying to own one ( pbass) and the telecaster!!! Can anyone help me to where I can get one ?? Or where to order them?… I love in Canada , Quebec. And I’ve been litteraly jonesing for an Antigua PBASS. And a squier perfect it will be cheaper 😂😂so I can afford 3 ❤❤❤❤love your show 🤘🏻💯
antigua has 2 types of fans, so ugly they love it or people that just think it looks cool. I saw somewhere that it was developed after the binding burnt on the coronado model so the finish was developed to make the darker edges look intentional
Antigua burst is the ugliest but those Squiers are the best looking Antigua burst I’ve seen they look to have a little more green in the perimeter and I’ve been wanting a Tele might as well be an uuuugggly one
Reason #4 to dig Sweetwater… you have a designated dude… he will call you a couple days after your order arrives (online) to make sure everything is good!!! Or if you buy in store… same… he calls you to make sure you are okay with your purchase!!!
Does Fender's marketing research actually indicate that the Antigua Burst is a good idea? They were fugly in the '70s and they're even fuglier now, and not even in a cool way. I hope they go away quickly so I can eat again soon.
@@TheGuitarGeek What Squire series are they part of? I've owned an '80s 1st gen (essentially a CBS bullet head that says Squire instead of Fender) and so far the Classic Vibe are the only ones that are that nice.
@@TheGuitarGeek also why the heck would you ruin my dinner with this design, when the sublime looking Amethyst ones were released at the same time?!?!?!?!
I had a original hard tail Antigua strat from the late 70's which I bought new back then. Actually a pretty horrible guitar. Got rid of it and got one of the early Tokai strats which was pretty good.
They really are ugly, but there's something special about finding that particular flavor of ugly that you like for some reason. I look forward to judging you when the review comes out.

Love the Antigua finish!
Antiguaburst, or "the last mushroom in Sainsbury's"...
I'm eating a bowl of Slash Signature cereal right now, with top-hat marshmallows. It's vitamin fortified to keep you strong like Slash.

the original Antigua strat was my first guitar - I love them. Not sure about how close the colour of the new ones are to the originals. We'll see.
Looove this show! Keep up the great work Andy! (And Victor 😎🤘)
Thanks V! And V
Im awaiting the Slash tribute bicycle with 50s stylee shopping basket.

Antigua burst is my favorite paint job besides Korina... I dont understand why people thinik its gross, it looks beautiful to me.
Beauty is in eye of the beholder in most cases, however, people think it's gross because it's touching on shades and tones of excrement and vomit.
Im a fan too, my wallet is relived there isn’t a Jazzmaster in the range.
Is Korina even a paint job? Isn't it just natural Terminalia superba wood?

Id like it better if the finish was black to white instead of a weird brown to white.
I've been saying recently that sometimes I love Antigua, sometimes I hate it, making it the durian of guitar finishes.
I love those Antiguas!
Dude I enjoy your stuff. Very non biased. Thanks for doing all the work! From Aiken, South Carolina USA.
Cracking section on Gibson's Slash signature.
I watched all of the commercials. And I would normally skip through all of them, but I have a Brit in Austria that I have to support. 👍🎸

You sir, have the Best Smile on the World Wide Web! 😁👍🎸 Thanks Andy.
You are spot on about yet another Slash signature (again, again, again). And their QC is still lacking. Except for custom shop.
I like the Antigua with the red burts outline

I am SO getting that Bass Six after I'm done paying off my O bass.
Thank you, in my heart.
There’s only one finish worse than “Antigua” and that’s “silver burst”!
Hey, idk if you noticed or not but there’s a misspelling in there. You spelt “Better” wrong. You spelled it like “Worse” instead.
Antigua burst looks my shorts after eating a tub of ice cream.
I want the Tele Antigua burst 😂 Bass VI looks sick and I want one too 😅
those new squiers are SO much better than those ugly Gibson tulip rubbish released not too long ago!!!
YES, BARFING. Who thought those colors were....desirable? (as I look at the one on your wall).
"Disgustingly Beautiful" is a perfect description of Antiqua Burst. Strat for me please 😏
Yers but Sweetwater are in the US so youre paying customs taxes when it arrives in Europe plus the cost of shipping
I am not tired of you talking about Gibson. I am tired about Slash Gibson models 😉
😂😂😂😂
Now if you could combine the brown turd burst with the durst burst, now you're in business😂
I love Antigua!!!! I hope they release a Squier Antigua mustang bass so I can feel like Richard Hell when I play bass haha😅

Traditionally Danelectro's are made from 'masonite', which is made of steam-cooked and pressure-molded wood fibers. So like a really hard cardboard?!?
Lol when Blink 182 played at Denny’s to copy the original Denny’s Grand Slam we did in 2013 in Sugar Land, TX

Did your Bass VI come in yet? My experience is that they need quite a bit of work. How has it been?
Thomann say in about 10 days... Very excited!

I had a 1979 Antigua Strat. HEAVY as hell. Not the greatest. I liked the look though.
I’ll stick with my cv Starcaster. Insanely great guitar for less than £400
I mean, I’ve entered into a drawing for a free one
The Danelectro tops used to be Masonite, not sure if they still are.
Well, here's a new Squier finnish, Compacted Bowell Diarrhea Burst.... Who knew that would be a colour combination?

I too used to hate the Antigua finish but I have grown to like it very much. !
Antigua burst makes me think of tea with milk.
Why doesn't Squier fix the intonation problems of the Bass VI Andy? I would have got one a long time ago except for the horror stories about that.
There is no Finish in the Fender library more polarising than the Antiqua Finish. I HATE IT 🍺🇨🇦
Boooo! You’re wrong and I’m right! I hate everything about you!!!
Well not really but that’s how you’re supposed to be on the internet isn’t it? 😂
Gibson released a Slash signature? Who would have seen that coming?
🤣😂🤣😂
🥰🤩💥💥💥💥 The Beatles used a Bass six quite a lot. I believe John Lennon was a big fan of it.

I like the finish on the guitar but not on the pickguard.
