  • I'm a beginner and had to search a lot to understand how to tune my kalimba. I have the 17 key kalimba and I bought a cheap little tuner online and it works wonderfully as you can see! Just make sure to set the tuner to C which is the default for a 17 key kalimba. Of course I know next to nothing about music so feel free to explore other tuning options.
    Tuning using a tuner:
First of all, you need a tuning hammer! It will normally come with your kalimba when you buy it, along with note stickers and a little cloth to wipe your fingerprints off! Otherwise, buy the hammer!
Your tuner should recognise any tone you play and will tell you it's C, D, E, etc but if the tuner screen isn't green and the scale isn't 0, it means you have to tune your tine (the long metal thingies that you play with).
If scale is on the right (0 to +50), hit the tine from the top to tune.
If scale is on the left (-50 to 0), hit the tine from the bottom to tune.
Once it's tuned, the green should be very natural, not forced. Meaning once you hit the note it should almost immediately become green. You will see how even though some keys are green, I'm still tuning it further because it fluctuates a few times before becoming green, therefore it's not truly 0.
    Caution:
Hitting the tines might displace them a bit. Move them with your finger or hit them on the top (right or left) gently with your little tuning hammer so that the tines are evenly spaced.
    Beginner advice:
Feel free to add the little stickers on your tines, as the default numbers on the tine is engraved on the tine and is quite hard to read. Obviously as a beginner you rely a lot on the numbers and alphabets!
There are more songs and tabs for 17 key kalimba so I would suggest this a good place to start in case you're still deciding to buy yours.
Tabs and arrangements for 21 key kalimba are harder to find so it might be trickier to use as a beginner.
If you bought the 21 key kalimba by mistake, don't worry! You can just ignore the 4 middle keys and play it like a 17 key kalimba! The 17 key one is like in the video, with C1 in the middle and E3 on its right and D2 on its left!
    Enjoy playing!
