@@Haunting_Shadow yeah but it's a lot visual and not much content I can't figure out where they're trying to go sometimes. Going back and forth between different things... It's a matter of preference I guess.
I know nothing about hacking or writing code aside from what I’ve heard on your podcasts. Yet, I am addicted to the stories you bring us. Great work man 👍🏻👍🏻
2 visuals from this one: Dude ditching the car to run info to CERT at the last minute, and the chuckle after "If I went to the Darkside, how would you know?"
I thought Mikko's voice sounded familiar. I watched one of his lectures before and was so fascinated with his history in cyber security! Thanks for another interesting episode. Stay well Jack!
Jack, the dark side may have cookies but no other benefits. Many people working in the "protect our clients" industries have strong morals and ethics, which, as Mikko said makes the job interesting and rewarding.

the way they enter the room is not as you describe it< there is a device that can reset any hotel room key I was working in a hotel and we did use it when we had trouble with the lock or we were sent to repair so we did use it to clean all information from it before we send it to repair and when a dore lock reset you do not need anymore a key to enter. but the old key will no more validate and open the lock
Fascinating learning more about the history of malware. I too was a fledgling technician in the early 90s so played a small part in containing the emerging virus threats. Ambulance was my favourite.
Ahh, the early days. Loved the history. I was guilty of playful malware myself I guess as a kid back in the very early days. Worked with a buddy to write a tricky bit of code and sneak it into the floppy boot process. I never thought of the real world consequences of my joke until our pastor mentioned in church that his sermon prep had been interrupted by a primitive chat bot hawking market produce and refused to go away until he agreed. Seems his son, my friend, had found our first "target".
Enjoyed another great broadcast. I remember the virus , Turkey in the straw, just played the jingle, then stoped was easy to fix but you had to restart your computer. Thank you and keep up the good work
Oh man, absolutely awesome video. That ending was hilarious but also left that bit of doubt... what if he has gone to the dark side and he's just a Palpatine... lol Great stuff!
Best podcast on the internet and I'm not even in tech. But you've made me think about a career in it because of all this cool shit you teach us about. You're awesome jack. I've referred some friends and shared episodes with them. Hopefully they enjoy your pod as much as I do
With the love bug, you have to keep in mind that at that time e-mail forwards was how jokes were sent at the time. Just like text memes are now. I recall one I got that was called "the Red Neck Virus" I saved it wanting to do a rewrite for a new joke. But the anti-virus I was using at the time grabbed the text file and quarantined it and would not let me get it. Because "virus" was in the name.
As a person who has been through type of stuff, it's refreshing to find a fraternity of people who don't think that this type of activity isn't bat crap crazy.
This happened to Doug Polk, very famous poker player on RUclips. He got Phished at a hotel in Vegas. The new way to check these days is to run simulations on solvers using a gpu and Nash charts.
I write trading algorithms and had been doing good for quite some time. Recently I discovered that my VNC (remote desktop) was compromised and access logs showed at least 2 addresses snooping around for a long time and coming back months later. Whilst they could only access trading platform logs and not the whole system as I only loaded basic X11 session, during this period my stats went bad and while I will never have definite proof, I'm starting to make a connection. Now I religiously monitor any connections coming in or out.
Ran into a virus back then called "The Bloody" that wasn't detected by any signiture files and wiped out the mbr and that thing drove me crazy for a week!
That was a bold attack: took down cameras, probably had security help, physically entered the room, physically injected the RAT. Several times. Incredible. The history lesson was interesting, too.
Im an amatuer web designer (self taught loser) and rediscovered a love of computers in the last couple years. Im by no means a hacker or a security specialist. But I have learned a ton of stuff from your show. Ive finished up with episodes before and went reading purely out of the new interests found in your podcast. I spent a night one time reading about SCADA systems even tho they have 0 to do with my life and ive probably never been in the room with one (likely never will be tbh). But thats what im saying -- its inspiring.
Every podcast I listen to on Spotify I always want to have a discussion with the listeners. It’s such a weird about-face from “Web 2.0” principles to not encourage a social aspect.
On Atari St, there was a virus using the floppy disk's boot sector. Called Ghost, it randomly changes your mouse's Up and Down direction. Annoying, and when you thought every floppy was virus-free, your mouse suddenly changed direction ...
Multi accounting was not unusual in the early days of Full Tilt and PokerStars... I knew a guy who had several accounts and would play 4-8 different tables simultaneously to maximize his profit.
The employees of the hotel are not tech-savvy. Because of that, I don't think that the cameras in the hotel were damaged. The camera's data might have been redirected to the hackers instead. Meaning that, while they were going in and out of the bedroom, the hackers were seeing them. Maybe the hacker was hidden below the bed and didn't even know lol.
I appreciate the fact that the security expert being all professional but still drops the F bomb while saying if you're a professional you don't fuck with your tools.
In my experience that’s just Finns speaking English. I remember the Hydraulic Press Channel tried being family friendly for a while but it seems they just dropped that eventually because when something crazy there is sure to be an F-bomb.
I had a virus years ago. It didn’t do anything malicious. It just made the floppy drive light up and made sounds like the disk was being accessed. It just liked to let you know it was there.
The easiest way to get into the majority of hotel room doors is by using a ID card and putting it through the door jam and pushing it just over the latch bolt. Freeing the lock from the door jamb.
I only heard this one now, strange, the subject of love letter was "I love you", just fyi - i remember the day , i saw the extension, so knew it was dodge - read the script - shutdown exchange
I would like to make an addendum to what the sec expert said about data fellows/f secure, do not and I mean do not take his longevity as standard. Companies do not reward loyalty with anything but a front row seat to your own firing when they "have to" "downsize".
These keep getting better and better. This one is sweetness itself. What's more, as I was writing this comment, my Kindle Fire slowed down to where words appeared on the screen four seconds after I typed them... WAIT A MINUTE! Naw... it does that a lot because I didn't pay $65 for more ram.
Jack is such a natural story teller. Netflix and it’s ilk could use just this episode for several seasons of material, and there are so many more episodes to draw from. Of course there would have to be a femme fatale, stuff blowing up in the first few minutes, deep state actors obstructing the protagonists and credible cliff hangers at the end of each episode. A cape and a mask would be optional😎🥸
I play poker for a living. I average $150 to $200 an hour and often times more. Live poker, I dont trust online poker really. Making 10 grand a week on average often times more playing a game I love is a blessing. No boss, no hard labor for little pay. I do what I want when I want and I have a fat wad of cash at all times. I have friends that work labor for roofing and they dont make anywhere near what I make. Screw that
