Rudell was murdered a few years ago. and they have never caught the one`s responsible. and more than likely never will. the reason I know this I`m kinfolk to Rudell.
So much has been lost to time because people didn't have recording devices with them daily as most of us do today. I had men in my family years ago with backgrounds similar to Rudell's. All I can remember is all there is now.
I don't play the banjo but I think it is one of the most versatile and underappreciated instruments out there. Not only can you make different styles, but you can use it for entirely different genres that most don't expect, you wouldnt even think it was the same instrument at first hearing.
His style is a little of both. He's picking up with his trigger finger and brushing down as his hand floats freely over the strings. We call that style up-stroke or up-picking. Old-time hipsters erroneously call it "Seeger style," because it was popularized by Pete Seeger after WW2.
Clifton Hicks keep them comeing 👍 music like this l started to hearing coming in on skip in Brooklyn NY on my fathers short wave radio in the early 50s l was about 12 at that time it stuck with me and l'm still looking for the this type of music, thank god for RUclips and people you keeping it a live.
This fella radiates a sincerity that these Portland newgrass hippies would sell their souls for. You just can’t fake this authenticity. I hope he’s playing for the Allmighty and enjoying his reward in Heaven.
Wish I lived in Pinetop...do anything for some real country/mountain life..god bless the USA...Welsh boy through and through...but U.S. IS ONE HELL OF A COUNTRY..LOVE TO YOU ALL..SEE Y"ALL SOMEDAY..🙌❤❤
Thank you for your kind comments about our country and may I say that from what I've seen of it on tv and the internet, Wales is very beautiful and has such a long and ancient history. It also produces such lovely singing voices!
Thank you for the video. I was fortunate to have worked in Hazard Kentucky in the early 90s, 27 I think I was. McMinnville TN, Crossville, Pinetop. Got to hear so much beautiful music.. Thank you again. I love you old and wise human.
I felt the second song so hard that it brought me to tears... inexplicable how that happens. The rawness I think is why I can feel it in my bones. Beautiful man, beautiful music. Rest in peace, Rudell.
I seriously need to focus on learning up picking style, it’s such a unique sound. I’ve only learned overhand/clawhammer and I love my thumb for the percussion sound, but I could listen to this style all day... all day. 😃👍
Wow, I found this and can't stop watching. This looks just like my grandfather! And honestly could be some kin. Lol. Im from waynesville nc, and I have never seen this music like this but here so u got to be close..... thanks for keeping it alive!!
MY PAPPY USED TO PLAY BANJO AND GUITAR AND SING "LITTLE BIRDIE","BATCHELOR'S HALL","BARBRY ALLEN","BONAPARTE'S RETREAT""ON THE SEA OF GALLILIE" ETC...PAP WAS BORN IN 1895 WENT TO WORLD WAR I WITH THE "RAINBOW DIVISION" AND PASTED AWAY IN 1976.PAP WAS MY BEST FRIEND IN THE WORLD AND I STILL MISS HIM VERY MUCH....PAP PLAYED VERY SIMILAR TO RUDELL AND HE CALLED THE STYLE "CLAW HAMMER".HE WAS FROM WIND CAVE,JACKSON COUNTY,KENTUCKY.WHEN HE WAS A BOY HIS MOTHER'S BROTHERS WERE UNION CIVIL WAR VETERANS.
Looks like he might be right handing some sort of 2 finger index lead style? He says he’s doing barely a 3 finger style, but the 3rd looks like some sort of brush?
People call his style "up picking" or "up stroke." It's essentially an index lead two-finger picking style, but the hand floats freely over the strings, brushing out the rhythm. It was very common at one time. See my video on this style here 👉 ruclips.net/video/y6p10I_8n3s/видео.html
My grandparents have 2 of them at the end of their driveway. Grandpa was a miner and strip miner. They're really cool though. He also has a lot of smaller tree pieces.
Damn... Is it just me... Or did these old timers... Just seem to have banjos... That would JUST SCREAM compared to thiae i hear anymore. My god dows it sound so LOUD and Ceisp
I sure wish he'd have pursued the question about the lyrics further. Rudell didn't understand what he was asking. I'd love to know exactly what he is singing.
aw wish I could make out the lyrics, would love to learn that marijuana tune. only noticing as I write this comment that this was on Clifton Hicks youtube haha

It never ceases to amaze me how different players achieve different sounds out of our beloved banjo
Amen to that!

This is some of the most authentic sounding banjo playing I've ever heard. Definitely one of my favorite videos.
Nobody lives for ever. But his music will. Thanks for sharing

This is some of the more unique ‘old time’ styles out there.
Unique claw hammer, too.

Awesome to hear some Kentucky banjo. I visit my girlfriend’s family over there might find a few good folks to teach me a thing or two.
I felt the second song so hard that it brought me to tears... inexplicable how that happens. The rawness I think is why I can feel it in my bones. Beautiful man, beautiful music. Rest in peace, Rudell.

His playing style reminds me of someone else I've heard but I can't recall who it is. Thanks for posting this Clif!

Is he playing claw or 2 finger style? reminds me of roscoe holcomb
I've always enjoyed listening to the elders. Do you know the date of this interview? Either way I'm grateful for this history preservation.
Marijuana Song, huh? LOL

To murder( to send one from a plain/dimension to another.)
You can hear that he used to be even better and he is out of practice and feeling his age.
Can you imagine how good if that banjo was actually in tune.... before SNARKS
