@@MartinBlyberg researched a bit with a mechanic. It was another rod, the one connecting the piston to the crankshaft. If that breaks, it can blow a hole in the side of the engine. It can also make the CLAAANG noise if the block is made out of cast iron, like most old engines.
Threw a rod means snapping the piston away from the crankshaft. The rod itself is called called the connecting rod or con rod, and turns the linear force of the piston into rotary force on the crankshaft. If you threw a rod you may as well get a new engine because the sheer force needed to break one will destroy many other components.

Could be that it was a pushrod in the engine that instead of pushing the valves open, pushed a hole in the engine. Based on the threw a rod quote.
