  • Join Danya and I as we walk the ancient Kumano Kodo trail through the mountainous Kii Peninsula. For over 1000 years people have traversed this sacred network of trails to the three grand shrines of Kumano. This area is one of two pilgrimage routes in the world to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. This pilgrimage has several different routes, we complete our journey along the most travelled, the Nakahechi route.
If you'd like more information on the trail logistics and how to book/plan your Kumano Kodo hike; we recently completed a video going through all this. Check it out here: • TRAIL LOGISTICS | How ...

Danya and I first visited Japan in 2016 and when we were at the top of Mt Koyasan, we saw a beautiful looking trail heading off into the forest. We later learned this was the Koechi route of the Kumano Kodo trail and we are still dreaming of doing it one day. How did you find the Koechi route compared to the Nakahechi route? I imagine it would feel more remote and adventurous ❤️
Thank you for your kind words and we are so happy it has allowed you to relive your experience 🙏

@@ChrisandDanya this route is recommanded only for experimented walkers...actually to me it was not harder than Nakaechi ! And it was my first trek trip 😅 So to me Nakaechi was already hard (we did not take any bus so 5 days walks was already a challenge to me).
Koechi is more wild, we did not meet any tourist on the route (only japanese people) and we were often alone on the trek so it is incredibly quiet. We were so chocked to see lot of people when we arrived at Koyasan ! 🤣
But I definitly prefered Nakaechi route. I felt the atmosphere more sacred, the forest more green and humid ...🙏

I can’t believe this doesn’t have more likes. Even if backpacking through Japan is not your thing, I would think all those viewers would appreciate the shots you got, of the beautiful spaces you walked through, and the ancient symbology shown. I would love to hit some of the forests of Japan one day, and see some old Shinto shrines... Reminders that possibly, the great spirit, or spirits of this world, are not separate from us in the heavens, but all around us in the natural world. Wonderful video! Super well done.

The town "Nachikatsuura" in Kumano is my grandmother's hometown.
A place that even Japanese people can't go to.
Kumano is a place you can't go without being called by Kumano.
The land that is protected by the wind of the Pacific Ocean and breathes continues to Kumano Nada (land shelf).
And Kumano is the forefront of the heartbeat of the earth.

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  4 года назад +1

Hey Mike, we use a Panasonic G9 body with Olympus 12-40mm F2.8 lens. For any super wide shots, we use the Laowa 7.5mm lens (usually the talking and following shots). The Panasonic G9 can shoot 4K 60 fps, which is how the majority of the slow motion shots were done. If you recorded something in 30/24 fps but you want to slow it down, you can slow it down by ~50% in Premiere Pro by rendering the clip in Optical Flow mode
Hope you have a wonderful time on the trail! We hope to go back sometime and do the other routes

We're planning on making an informative video on how to plan/book the Kumano Kodo Trail, because there is so many different ways to do it and it can get a bit confusing.
Our hike was over 3 days and the difficulty is really just medium. Just some steep climbs/descents with lots of stairs, other than that the trail itself is easy and very well maintained. I cant remember the exact times and distances we hiked each day, but we will figure that all out for the video.

Bit of a chill in the morning but you warm up on the trail. Not too many deciduous trees around this area but the few pockets of colour we did see were lovely. It sounds like it would also be great in spring. Definitely a fantastic trail!

Even as time goes by and the surface of a town changes, nothing changes in the underlying foundation of the unique Japanese culture.
The common root of the creation of originality in Japanese culture is the uniqueness of its geopolitical location and the influence of its natural environment.
Even if they import culture and knowledge from abroad, they are not dominated by it, and after a certain period of time, they select the content, integrate it with their own culture, improve it, and eventually create a new style because of the influence of their unique natural environment.
Japan's original country name "NIPPON”(Japan) means "the land under the sun" , but another name is "YAMATO(WA)” , meaning “Peacefully Harmony among People and Nature”. So Japan's name means “the Land under the Sun” and” the Land of "Great Harmony of People and Nature,”
The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the Emperor's reign, but humans began to live in villages and communities in this island nation about 14,000 years ago, during “the JOMON pottery” culture. (That's 30,000 years ago, if you count the Neolithic period.)
Surrounded on all sides by the sea and geographically isolated from the Eurasian continent in the Pacific Ocean, this island nation has a warm and humid climate, and because it is a volcanic island, it is blessed with abundant underground clear water resources, diverse vegetation, and fishery resources.
For this reason, people have lived here for tens of thousands of years, enjoying the abundant nature and living in peace with nature.
Since ancient times, the people of this land have respected human harmony and have lived in peace by working together as a group.
However, while the natural environment of this island nation is rich, it is also harsh and has both light and dark sides.
They have shared and enjoyed the blessings of nature by pooling their wisdom and collectively overcoming numerous severe and harsh natural disasters, such as frequent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami, summer typhoons, and heavy snowfall in winter.
This is because this island nation has a harsh natural environment that cannot be overcome by a single person.
Individual power is too weak to face the onslaught of nature, which can destroy the wealth we have built overnight.
Therefore, many people should suppress their egos, dislike confrontation, and work together to create a livable environment and maintain cleanliness, and then work together to prevent disasters before they occur and to restore the environment after they have occurred.
This is the most wise, efficient, and rational way to maintain peace and harmony in each other's lives, rather than to create more chaos by insisting on each other's selfishness. And this thinkings have given rise to Japan's unique teachings, culture, and behavior.
The ancient name of Japan, "YAMATO" or "WA" (peaceful harmony between people and nature), represents the wishes and reality of the people who have been trying to survive in the rich and harsh natural environment unique to island countries, which is different from the dry and stable land of the Eurasian continent.
And it is in this ancient Japanese country name "WA YAMATO" that the essence of Japanese culture, the origin and secret of its unique culture, which is very different from the cultures of other Asian countries on the continent, is hidden.
