Vivian Knight: Loki's hypnotising thing didn't fail because Tony doesn't have a heart - he does, remember the first Iron Man movie "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart"? The thing in his chest is there to keep shrapnel out of his .heart..
It may well have failed because Loki can't get a clear path to his heart given that the thing is in the way.
I think it's far more than a physical obstruction. That arc reactor in Tony's chest is generating absurd amounts of energy. the prototype clocked in at 3 gigajoules per second. It's like trying to get to someone's heart through several nuclear power plants...

It's funny how Loki just had to touch the heart with his staff in order to control someone. But of course Tony had a substitute for a heart.

I'm glad they showed lokis physical strength in this scene as usually he appears weak but considering he is a god he is much much stronger than humans

Toni has a good point. What was Loki trying to gain from all this? I understand he's the supposed God of mischief, but even Loki is to smart for that. This was to well planned out to be doing this just because he felt like messing with everyone.
or... it could be that Loki couldn't get to Asgard so he Moriarty's the shit out the avengers into taking his ass back to Asgard from what ever hell hole he was in before earth. I think this is what he wanted all along. he thinks humans are puny little insects why control earth when you can control Asgard. some people think this was just a xanatos gambit. which is kinda brilliant and so very loki.
It's like Moriarty in Sherlock. try to steal the crown jewels, sit there and wait for the cops to show up only to threaten the jury into giving a not guilty verdict just to set up Sherlock into looking like he had a crazy dangerous computer code that can open any door so that pretty much every criminal everywhere is out to get sherlock. Long con.
Whether he knows it or not, Tony is not just talking about this event. He's also pretty-well describing Ragnarok. He'll win that battle...and then lose, along with everyone and everything else. So no, this is pretty par for the course for Loki. Hell, it's par for the course for all the Asgardians. They know they're going to lose in the end, but they keep on fighting. If you're going to fail, if you're going to *lose* atleast make it the most spectacular thing to ever be witnessed. Something those in the World After will sing songs about until their turn comes.

This scene was a bit much. Really Loki just didn't care enough about Stark, or any of the Avengers other than his brother. Why? Because even the best the Hulk can do us bruise him. Of course his disdain for the suped-up humans was also his downfall. But seriously? Tiny (pun intended) should have been more injured.

@riwillion he does do these things but he isn't considered a strong physical character much more a mental strength. The hulk smash and being captured also did not show his strength regardless if it was planned or not.

I kinda agree, but I am struggling to remember a scene where he appears weak... I mean, even in Thor, he holds his own against his brother, who is extremely mighty, and in the Avengers he kicks Captain America´s ass, after single handedly throwing a man on a table.

Well I guess Im in the minority but I hated The Avengers, I was worried from the start that all of these great single movies Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger, etc. when they were supposed to collide it might not be good and thats exactly what happened, also because in between the time that Iron Man was made and The Avengers was made Disney bought Marvel and the attitude and tone of everything changed from something you could take seriously to something you can't.
