i totally resonate with how you describe the development of one's own style. i remember hearing something like, once you've honed the fundamentals to a certain level, you gotta just forget them and let yourself flow.
Hey bro the fact that you draw inspiration from Bruce lee shows that you really know martial arts. His philosophy of fighting was more in depth than anyone's. And he I believe was closest to achieving ultra instinct. And if I had to bet another inspiration for you would be prime Conor McGregor. Idk just a guess. These are also my inspirations and Bruce's philosophy of being like water, emptying your mind and honest expression are things that I always think about. Good vid
Like I’ve expressed before I really enjoy your content and your approach to martial arts and martial arts training, unfortunately I’ve been diagnosed with a spinal condition and will be undergoing spinal surgery very soon so it’s a strong possibility my days of martial arts training are going to be behind me, but I’ll continue to watch your videos and support your channel because I believe you have a great philosophy as a martial artist, thanks for the inspiration 🙏
Sorry to hear that bro! That must be tough, but is there anything you could do like just light flow stuff where you're just having fun and getting a light sweat on? Honestly, that's what I actually do most of the time
@@grantstevensma we will see, I have a incredible surgeon and if I heal properly hopefully I can atleast do some light martial arts training, stretching and stuff like that, that’s what I’m really hoping for 🙏, thanks
Thank you for talking about style. It's something I will grow into over time and practise. What you said about the process of learning the method before breaking the method is so important. Learn the rules before breaking them. Learning and practising the method is how we learn why we do what we do and why we don't. Definitely can't skip learning the method.
100% Man! The most common thing is those that don't want to do that first crucial step! But then like I mentioned in the vid, there's the other side where people get too bound by the rules. Anything you identify with too strongly, will eventually become a prison
Nice man! Now you wanna expand outside of those if you can. In the video I wasn't talking so much about style, but more about the way in which each individual approaches that style. So, for instance, everyone in Kyokushin will have a slightly different way of doing it and that's where you wanna express yourself. So styles can be seen as like containers that you express yourself within freely!
Love it man always learning from your vids! definitely not at a level where I can break the rules yet. But cannot wait to get there! & definitely agreed at the end to keep an open mind & Willing to learn from others I always keep a white belt mentality! & The people I’m inspired by is of course Bruce lee, Tony jaa, Donnie yen & Grant Stevens 🔥😎🤙🏽 I see them as role models in everything really not just physicality but other than that yeah! 1:23 that part never fails to crack me up 😂😂😂😂
Amazing you're able to recognise that bro and that's the sign of a mature and measured mind/approach! Keep up the good work I see you getting better all the time 🔥
Grant, I notice you leave your lead hand down a lot when you are hitting pads, shadow boxing, and doing bag work. Do you do this in sparring as well ? The reason I ask is that I have been having a little more success in my kickboxing sparring class when I use a philly shell because I feel it makes it easier to defend punches, however when I spar high level opponents, it gets scary due to me not being able to react fast enough to high kicks coming over the left shoulder(in orthodox stance). Do you feel the Philly Shell can work in kickboxing, or lead hand low stances in general ? Would love to see a video from you regarding your theories on defense. Thanks !
Good question bro! A lot of that has to do with range and confidence in evasion. I wouldn't use this type of guard if I was 'in the pocket', against a skilled opponent and would most likely revert a move traditional hands high guard. But it really depends on the situation, like you said some things will work against a lower skilled opponent that then become unappreciable against higher level ones. I certainly think everything can work and be applicable, but it more comes down to the individual doing it, hence this video subject.
Yes thats what I have been saying sometimes I have my guard up and sometimes I rely on my speed and reflexes to evade strikes there is no one size fits all in fighting you have to be able to change footwork and striking depending on a fight also my style is power durability and speed I can not do long fights I have K.O power but not a great stamina I am 6'3 210lbs so my style is high risk high reward I cant fight like floyd
Certainly work with your strengths, in your case speed and reflexes, however I definitely advocate for doing some work on the other areas in order to have a more well rounded skillset.
Nice content man, thank you, I've learned a lot from you, and I'm proud of keep learning from you, you are a wise man. Can you give an sparring alternative? because I dont have any martial arts gym or school, so I need to learn mostly home, my parents sometimes do pad work with me but I can't spar, I'm not going to spar my parents, I've been doing like an image training, where I visualize me in a fight but nothing else, any alternatives for sparring, or some exercises / drills that can help me for that?
That's tough man because there's nothing that can replicate the real thing effectively, however I would suggest getting something like a double end bag or a cobra bag for that, so you can practice head movement and defence in a way that's unpredictable.
@@RadiantShadow13 Not other than what you're doing already in terms of the visualisation, but that's also incredibly limited because it's still not live as in unpredictable - which an opponent would be. All I can suggest in that case is just getting your fundamental techniques to an incredibly high level so you're more versatile as mentioned in the vid
They're quite similar already bro, but you wanna not over think it. Just express yourself freely not paying attention to the 'rules' of those styles, which will ultimately limit you. Just do you!
Love your technique very sharp and precise how often do you shadowbox how many minutes do you do if i dont have partner train with how can I get better without a sparring partner
Thanks bro! I do some shadowboxing as a part of every session and do 5-10 minutes or so. There are loads of ways to improve your technique and things like that, but if you're talking sparring specifically it's virtually impossible to really improve in that without just doing the thing. It's so unpredictable that there's really no way to replicate it without a physical opponent. The closest you're really gonna get alone, is getting something like a cobra bag or double end bag to be able to train defence, timing, accuracy etc. Other than that just get really really good at the fundamental techniques.
Hey Grant I've been on Sr for almost 2 months but day by it is getting harder to control perverted thoughts even doing meditation still can't let me get hang of it. So what to do and how to entirely keep ourselves away from such thoughts and urges?
It's the wrong idea to think you can keep yourself away from such things. In fact you should do the opposite... Welcome and accept them instead, but then realise you do not have to act on any thought. They are simply like clouds passing a blue sky. You are the sky, not the clouds!

My stile is kicking and taking in strikes from kyokushin, punching and evading from boxing and if i end on the ground then i have bjj.

Thank you for inspiration.
Read the story of mantis style and drunken style. They didn't make the martial artists strong, they made the style strong.
Do you train TKD? Cuz if you do, you're one of the very few I respect in that area.
