I mean it seems almost certain that a 40K total war is coming and thus is something that would probably be even more ambitious of a scale then Starwars. Plus I remember CA putting up a poll several months ago about what games people wanted to see and Starwars was on it.

Last CA game with decent naval combat was Fall of the Samurai. They followed that masterpiece with Rome 2, which had naval combat so notoriously bad, it's been cut from the franchise ever since. As for Halo Wars 2, the template was already there from the first game. They just had to copy it without royally screwing it up. I'm convinced the only reason they didn't screw it up was because they couldn't simply rely on their usual fanbase to just forgive them like every other boondoggle, minimal effort was actually required. Who knows, maybe that would actually bode well for a Star Wars game.

But why would they if the number don't make sense. Business decisions aren't made on capability alone. Without Disney waiving liscensing fees, there wouldn't be enough meat on those margins. Halo isn't a small IP and it underperformed in that style so the pitching team would have an uphill battle from the word go. Meanwhile the total war style has been doing quite well up until the Saga stuff.

As a Total War Warhammer content creator, I highly doubt Total Star Wars is happening for a bunch of reasons. The biggest by far is Creative Assembly seeing massive cuts and layoffs after the Hyenas fiasco and several successive Total War flops. They've seen cuts across the board including the closing of entire studios. Now, according to SEGA's own corporate releases, they're on a much shorter leash.
Then there's Warhammer itself. There have long been rumors in our community that Warhammer 40k, their sci-fi IP, would come after Fantasy wrapped up. Its looking like Fantasy is likely done in the next couple of years. So it seems possible these leaks were confused for 40k or perhaps purposefully leaked wrong information, which has happened to me personally. Even a smaller, Halo Wars 2-style RTS just seems unlikely if they're making a different strategy game in a different sci-fi franchise.
The most plausible scenario where this is real is Creative Assembly's relationship with Games Workshop went so far south it left our galaxy for one far far away. Or its possible, if very unlikely that there was never going to be a 40k game due to the mouse's big bag, and Star Wars was always the plan.
That said, I would be very happy to be wrong. I much prefer Star Wars over 40k, so here's to hoping this is real!

From what I remember in LegendOfTotalWar's video he did, CA and GW have been having issues with fantasy lately. CA apparently wants to do Ind, Nipon, etc but they need GW to create and confirm the lore but they don't want to, leaving CA very little to do other than expand upon races they already have, do reworks, etc which is not what fans are craving.
Also apparently, the engine CA is using has been stretched to capacity with TW WarHammer. Even simple changes and updates are causing major issues and CA is very keen to end the WarHammer trilogy sooner rather than later. However, they don't want to give up the massive success so apparently talks of Total War WarHammer 40K are already well underway and if my memory is correct, we can expect something by late next year

I’m quite in the loop on the total war community and I’m going to be honest while not impossible, it wouldn’t make sense with the how medieval 3, Empire 2 and a warhammer 40k total war being all but confirmed at this point. So if it did come out it would be a long way off probably half a decade from now. Also recently creative assembly were hit by massive layoffs so I wouldn’t expect any side games from them for some time either as they are in a pretty rough spot with sega at the moment. Leading back to the 40k game I mentioned, GW who licence out the warhammer IP are pretty strict and I doubt they would be happy with another space franchise game when the warhammer total wars have been a cash cow for a while and 40k will be probably no exception. Lastly the leaker that shared the initial information isn’t actual a very reliable one, with a spotty track record so it really remains to be seen.

    • @christopherpoet458
      @christopherpoet458 23 дня назад

True, but Star Wars has something that a lot of other titles do not: The Lore. Now, do not get me wrong, the other titles have quite a bot of lore. But...
How often do you hear of different businesses or corporations in Halo or Mas Effect? Most other Sci-Fi titles focus on the flashy combat and their twist on space warfare. Star Wars does too, but the range of stories have at least offered once consistently positive thing. New aspects of the universe. People may not love all the scenes in the movies that feature this stuff, but from shows and movies as references, you can have a wide range of games fit in the SW IP.
      - Exploring new Planets in a 4x Civ Style of gameplay.
      - Run a minning company manufacturing materials and selling them to the market like Offworld Trading Company.
      - Make a game about a Bounty Hunter seeking targets across locations in the galaxy.
      - You could probably make a game akin to Shipbreaker where the player is employed by the Empire to deconstruct ships and salvage different parts and elements.
Heck, I am sure plenty of people would line up for a game where you just run a pub on Tatooine and have to manage the staff and guests.
Now, I bet Halo and Mass Effect could pull it off if they really tried, but lets be real. For titles like those some of these ideas would have a lot of fans of their respective games quite confused. But for star wars it would just take 5 minutes and most would probably be like "Yea, yea I can see that".

  • @katoorphen4821
    @katoorphen4821 25 дней назад +2

    Ideally...
They make the Galaxy Map the world map and each planet is a "city", with naval battles between them. Siege with your orbital bombardment and landing troops is the ground battle. This would put more of an emphasis on the space battles; and maybe 'troops' are just a unit of fighters whereas siege engines/machines/beasts are capital ships. (Like all of Blue Squadron would be one troop card for the space battle)
    Just my 2 cents.

The big problem with a Total War style Star Wars game is that the engine they use for those games literally can not support it. Ranged and squad based combat like what you would expect in a Star Wars game isn't something a Total War game can effectively render so if there is a Total War Star Wars game coming expect something more like Halo Wars 2 than Total War.

That decrepit engine should have been replaced before it launched its first game. It's never worked well, even for its designed function. CA barely managed to squeeze two good games out of it (Napoleon and Shogun 2) before resorting to cutting feature after feature to "solve" all the glitches they kept running into. Navies, cut. Armies without generals, cut. Even firearms, the point of the engine in the first place, have been devolved into nothing more than retextured bows and arrows because somehow working ballistics is just too much hassle these days.

A Total War SW game actually works perfectly. Basically, it would result in a game resembling OG Battlefront 2's Galactic Conquest with an expanded campaign map element (developable planets in place of normal Total Wars cities and HS routes in place of roads with borders possibly representing sectors) and the battle element switched from individual shooter to RTS style. So unlike SWBF2 having the Battle of Geonosis consisting of a couple hundred troops on either side, there can be proper large-scale battles involving potentially dozens of 200 troop units on each side of a battle. And on the campaign map, planets would be far more valuable as they could be built up to be more useful than just a held planet to fight over.

For that to work, they'll to rework some of the combat systems of the battle phases to fit, many would say it won't fit but that's the point. Nowadays, Total War feel... pretty much a rehash and reskin of their previous yet recent titles. Roman 2, Attila, Britannia, Warhammer, Troy, Pharaoh, all uses the same unwieldy engine that makes the games feel tad the same. Three Kingdoms, at least, made the attempt on trying different things with it but gave up due to multiple factors that also involves engine limitation. With a new engine, newer features on the battle phases can be added for more modern combat in mind without sacrificing the core gameplay that much, and perhaps have Naval Combat (Or in the case of SW, space combat) make a triumphant return.

I am really curious about this. I am more curious if it really is going to cater to the Total War gameplay loop.
Trying to think of how this would work out, I imagine space battles will be the primary focus of the game and fleets will be mandatory to move between locations. So Cities are going to be the equivalent of Planets. I am also going to assume that Hyper Lanes are not going to be a dominant factor of the game. At least, I do not expect them to be unless a Hyper Lane acts like a Road but travel outside the lane will involve more risks to the fleet? I am not personally aware of TW using much in terms of environmental hazards except for the Volcano Eruption in Rome TW and I think there is a Volcano and Flood event in Medieval 2.
    But I can imagine it.
    Cities > Planets (and/or Stations?)
    Roads > Hyperspace Lanes
    Boats > Fleets
    Regions > Sectors of Space
Mercenaries > Black Market (Including ships?)
You can still use armies comprised of 20 units.
I can defiantly see DLC support for different eras and factions.
This would be a prime chance to consider expanding the political system.
And we could see a lot of minor factions come into play.
I guess my only question with the title is what are they doing to do different this time with the TW title.
Rome 2 and onward has made efforts to try new mechanics (like FOW or Burning Forests with Fire Arrows).
Empire Total War gave us a shot a naval warfare and I recall that being met with mixed reviews. More or less tilted to a negative response. But this sort of combat would be essential to a Star Wars Total War game.
I guess the obvious direction would be integrating use of The Force and a focus on more mechanized units like tanks and walkers.
Or are we going to get more proactive buildings that do more in battles? And/or have control over what types of those buildings we make? Here I am thinking walls, turbo laser towers, AA towers, Artilery. Shields. Etc.
My only other thought with this is that it won't be a Total War title and we will get a game more closely aligned with the Halo Wars series.

@@TheGuard72 Everything WH after the first one has just been nothing but a glorified DLC. I find the WH lore interesting but the games are shit as the battles are just a mosh pit of units with single troop/hero’s doing insane damage with spells that require no skill. I fully acknowledge there are people who enjoy things like that but the fan base that has been around since the start almost all hate the WH games and basically everything that came after them as they departed from the way they made the old games. The new games are dumbed down for new players which has alienated the old players which is why CA is failing as a game company. I can’t think of a worse studio to pick to try and make an RTS for SW as of right now.

What I want to see is a single galactic map, two (or more) factions vying for control of parts of the map. One tier below that, the various fleet commanders show in orbit to fight for orbital control. They launch fighters to help the capital fight. They launch shuttle craft or other transports to engage with the ground-side battle.
Ground troops would function like first-person-shooters, plus a field commander to look at battle lines and control anything the FPS players haven’t nabbed. Like on the ground, most players in space will be fighter or shuttle pilots, but there would also be a player Fleet Commander (maybe a few, depending on size) to manage the capital ship fighting. Maybe send some fighters down to the planet to help the FPS peeps.
A great analogy would be the Battle of Scarif, from Rogue One. Admiral Raddis was in charge of the fleet, and except when the Hammerhead killed a Star Destroyer with another Star Destroyer, he’s only capital ship commander shown. But we eventually saw most of Red, Blue, and Gold squadron’s pilots. Two squads stayed outside the shield to help with the capital fight, while one went to the planet to help with air superiority for the ground troops. They flew in on a transport, then set out on foot to accomplish the mission.
I don’t know what gameplay would be like… maybe you end up with the fighter pilots just doing loopty-loops while the FPS deals with unexpected delays. But then the Imperial commander sends reinforcements, both Vader’s ship and the Death Star.
All levels of play exist, and battle are just like that. But someone could make a FPS character, who does bounty hunting. Or some one like Vader. Show up at the capital ship level, but then hop in a shuttle for boarding… fly to Raddis’ ship and do the FPS hallway scene.

3:08 I haven't seen anyone really saying this and I've been thinking and saying this too. when games takes large IPs , they always seem to dumb it down so new audiences don't get confused.
Great example I like to use is, remember battlefront 1? when we heard EA was making a star wars game we were thinking oh damn holy crap! a battlefield star wars?!?! but then it came out,and it was an insanely dumbed down battlefield. And even with battlefront 2, albeit closer to battlefield, it was still dumbed down battlefield
It'd be very cool if it comes out similar to like company of heroes or men of war esque though!

Star Wars - Rebellion would actually make a good inspiration for a SW- TW. Planets, Planet Sieges, Scale of Ship Battle. Now a good Concept for Troops, cover and Vehicle Concepts and Jedi that can still do Force ontop of walls... In addition, TW games need not to dumb down anymore. I mean what comes next? Hand holding or a Mysterious Stranger killing enemy Heroes on easy difficulty? Fighters can fight based on Tech above the Battlefield, so you have a amazing lightshow in the sky and after you have air spueriority you can call in Bombing runs 1-2 times

I think this will be good. They have the mechanics down for a SW game and they have the map development experience as well. With the latest addition to WH3 the map is huge and interactive, it’s not outside the realm to conduct space and land battles and maybe even some underground battles as well in a SW universe. I absolutely love the WH series they have done. I am a historical boy but fantasy and sci-fi are right up my alley I think Creative Assembly will do fine and I am hopeful for what they release.
