You always inspire me so much, your art is gorgeous. I've done digital painting for years and am only now just getting into acrylics. I'd love to give oils a go soon, this is so helpful, thank you!

This is great. I'm enjoying your videos a lot. You seem to have such a clear grasp of hue and tonality. Adding the orange tones to the skin really brought it to life. Buuuut I'm such a stickler for eye anatomy. The cornea is actually the clear outer layer of the eye that domes outwards in the centre. The 'whites' of the eye are the sclera. I used to work in optics which is why I'm such a pain with this 😂

I find them really helpful in my learning! I'll let you know when I have completed my second painting (again... I'll probably use one of your videos as a ref.)
What I find extremely helpful about every single one of your videos is that you show me what colours you use to create all the different tones in the references. Keep it up because I have NO IDEA how to mix colours yet!!! Thanks for your help I really appreciate it!!

    Georgeous, and wonderful to watch.
The word "cornea" doesn't mean what you think it does, though. Here's what it means. The cornea is the transparent part of the eye that covers the front portion of the eye. It covers the pupil (the opening at the center of the eye), iris (the colored part of the eye), and anterior chamber (the fluid-filled inside of the eye).
When you say that word you meant the "white" of the eye.
Still, I'll subscribe and watch more of your lovely work. Thanks for posting it!

Wow, that was so amazing, I have never seen the painting of an eye demonstrated so expertly. Your skills are unbelievable, and I will make an attempt to use what you have taught me, as I am struggling with a 16"×20" portrait of my prescious little 4 year old granddaughter. To share a little about myself, I am 30 years, USArmy, retired, and combat disabled from my 3 wars, and 4 combat tours, trying to live through the loss of my Commander, and too many of my soldier and coalition friends. My painting has always been a struggle while working through my problem with color-blindness. Red/green is the range of my color problems. I am so looking forward to your other teaching videos. Thank you,
    MSG Leum

Absolutely love your painting and the way you teach is incredible. Just in case you hadn’t already been informed however, the white of the eye is the Conjunctiva, not the Cornea. The clear covering surface of the coloured Iris is actually the Cornea. (Sorry the doctor part of me couldn’t let this pass!) Thank you for sharing so much of your beautiful skills with the world...you have inspired me to move from acrylics to oils!

For people who want to be able to draw/paint eyes or irises in particular very realistically without any references, try to think of the iris as a caldera covered in tangled little organic strings. The iris looked so complicated and impossible to replicate in simple shapes and forms, but as I understood the structure and realised that was the reason for why the lighting hits it that way. This was a good exercise and it really helped me looking at this from my own perspective, since no one really explained the true simplicity of the iris that way. Hopefully you know the basics about lighting, shadows, undertones and such as well.

Sometimes it's not that folks can't do what you are showing & explaining ...actually I believe so many people are MORE than capable of doing this kind of work, it is that life has its stresses & strains & many factors that are beyond one's control.
Then of course there is the decisive expression to simplify...reasons are tough to explain ...I find even as an artist & individual I forget, even with journals, ...seasons change & so rapidly these days.
All that said thank you sincerely Lena it wasn't wasted time in the least & refer to my former comment.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I couldn't quite tell from the vid if you were switching up soft or stiff bristled brushes for different parts of the eye- can you expoumd on that a bit? Also, do you have a rough way of gauging quanitity of paint to load on your brush? I find for small details I'm often overloading and creating globs, or more often, underloading and don't have enough for a clean smooth stroke for say, an eyelash. I'm guessing it's just more practice, but curious if there is a tidbit you can share.

About the underpainting, I actually have a tip/suggestion if thats alright:
My painting teacher suggests to do the underpainting with a color that is the opposite "tempeture" of the pallette, so for example if your painting has more yellow/red tones than blue, you should use a blue/green etc for the underpainting.
(btw ur eyes r really pretty lena, mine are a dull black/brown lol)
