I understand them wanting bigger or better but they had enough income to make it work. And seemingly just choose not to budget. Like they could've let go some employees, as much as that sucks. Because you can't tell me they actually needed 25 employees. Get a smaller office. Manage and promote their pateron more. And just make content with in their finances.
They potentially made up to 60k a MONTH on pateron alone. They had the merch income. 80$ hoodies and 40$ white tshirts. And each ad read could have been around 15-30k.

So, I loved Buzzfeed Unsolved, and I love Watcher. I truly do want to support their content. HOWEVER, the idea that I can afford another streaming service is laughable. I can't even afford Premium RUclips, despite how much I hate ads. $5.99/month may not seem like a lot to them for their new streaming service, but it's just another expense on top of other more crucial expenses. The cost of gas just went up again in my state, so I am not driving anywhere except to get to work, and to get groceries once a week. The only paid streaming service I have right now is Netflix, because they have a wide variety of quality shows and movies. I'm not paying for a crappier version of Netflix that only features a couple of shows that I like that I've been watching for free for years on RUclips! Make it make sense! Most of us can't afford an extra $5.99 because we can barely afford gas and food already. I love Watcher, but I'm really pissed that they didn't find an alternative option instead of forcing EVERYONE to pay to watch them. An option would have been nice.

To me it's disappointing. They have between 6k and 12k patreons that already pay 5 dollars a month and they only got a 40 percent discount on the new streaming service. When you put free content behind a 6 dollar pay wall? Then say its affordable to everyone? You are making assumptions. People have it rough this day and age and some can barely afford to eat and thats why they go to youtube bc its free and a variety of entertaining stuff. When you charge 6 bucks to everyone? Then you basically alienate your core audience who would probably rather pay for Netflix. Great video

The pateron brought in potentially 57k a month. At a minimum 30k a MONTH.
The merch 80$ for a sweatshirt and 40$ for a white tshirt.
They had 25 employees which to me seems like overkill and redundant. Like as much as it sucks maybe let go of some employees. Downsize the office. They could make quality content they want without burning money.
They could've just instead put the after show on pateron. And used pateron.
Now they have to pay for the website. Plus video hosting or whatever is expensive as hell.

i'm gonna say this separate from my edited post cos it's long enough but i think it should be known and worth others seeing, i feel like the reason why coffeezilla's low production works (i'm assuming 'void' came from just sitting in front of a black wall? i'm not SUPER familiar with coffeezilla but i wander over there from time to time when topics are relevant to things i'm watching already) but like a lot of us consuming content, are ADHD as hell and just need a background noise while we're doing other things. i literally watch like.. 1-2 videos a day like ACTIVELY and that's when i'm eating breakfast or dinner when my hands are busy doing something that isn't scrolling around on the internet or drawing/crocheting. everything else is being put on the background to listen to so content that doesn't require someone to pay attention to the visuals all the time is good for us to just listen to and for those who want to see the creator, they have a nice, unbusy video to look at. yea, sometimes the higher production quality vids are fun on occasion, but it doesn't have to be EVERY video.
(this is also why i can never finish any series of anime or tv shows bc i feel like i have to put everything down and intently focus on the show at hand to take it all in or it distracts me from other things too much so i start series and then never finish them)

the "anyone and everyone can afford $6" thing was the real salt in the wound for me. that would require me to give up my apple music. if I wanted youtube premium, I'd have to consider giving up my music. the reality is that it's not $6, it's $6 that another 30-40 organizations are ALSO asking me to pony up. and they are not all going to be worth it. those of us who aren't whales have to actually choose what we do and don't purchase -- and purchasing Watcher is just a foolish use of money if you're not rich, full stop.

It's even worse when you check out their social media promos about how they were hyping this up with a countdown to the big announcement, as if they were revealing a new show to the channel (which they were doing, in a roundabout way). They also did this a mere 48 hours or so before their live show in the UK, which a lot of people are demanding refunds for. And apparently the new streamer isn't equipped to handle international payments, so there's that working against them too, not to mention exchange rates where $6 is the equivalent of buying over 30 loaves of bread in some countries. Plus a huge chunk of their viewers only watch maybe 2 or 3 of their shows, not everything they produce. A lot of people are also questioning what their budgeting looks like for things like their cooking show, where one food item costs thousands of dollars to make, only to then ask people who are often teenagers and college students struggling to get by on cup noodles and sandwiches to fund that content that they probably don't even watch and doesn't get nearly the views here on YT as their most popular shows.

But to a lot of poorer/student/disabled fans they’re now just another case of rich people who didn’t care enough to think about them before making a decision like this- if there had been a second option (eg a free ad-driven version) or even if they had just kept ghost and mystery files on RUclips (the videos where they generally get an excess of 1mil each time) they wouldn’t be getting this kind of backlash. It failed bc no one believes them. Steven drives a Tesla and Shane preached to eat the rich. I don’t believe they are hurting on funding, plenty of RUclipsrs that pull around the same views and have seen brand deal contracts have come out in the past about how much revenue it makes. Logically why would they become reliant on people subscribing instead of just putting 2 ads in their videos or putting bonus content on a paywall. They also sold merch.
You’re telling me they can’t support a 25 people team and produce the content. What about gmm? Smosh? Mr.Beast? Try guys? There’s so many creators already running companies off of RUclips. If it’s traveling then come up with shows that stay in office. Some sets can be in their garage. I’m a horror fan and a lot of classics were made off of nothing but creativity like Blair Witch and Saw. If they’re hurting for cash, be creative and find a new angle.

I admit i didn't follow them, but I can honestly say I definitely will not follow them now. Fan base appreciation is huge and is how they got to where they are now, except they are more about the $$$. I also agree with the Sam and Colby reference, they are trying to go Hollywood it seems, and even though I used to follow them religiously, the content anymore just isn't appealing. It seems like they are chasing the dollar, which is fine, I respect and understand that, but the content quality has fallen far and hard, IMO. Just my opinion though.

i think shane only said 'roped into' unsolved was bc at the start of the series it seems there was a different cohost who left after a few episodes of it to a different company and shane was the fill in for that host basically but he never seemed DISinterested in the content they produces for those episodes imo
wait.. i didn't watch the full video on their channel cos i was disgusted. 'maybe' they'll bring back puppet history? did they seriously not have ANY plans to bring that back as one of their most successful shows AND the has the most videos for? bc they've been here and there putting him in OTHER shows for a second is that ALL they were going to do with the Professor (puppet) instead of bringing back the series? i feel even less upset about not seeing their content now cos that's what i was looking forward to the most.
THEY ADMITTED IT WAS IN BETA? buddies, u don't MAKE people pay for BETA TESTING... u don't start charging people until u have a stable product to sell...
it's also bananas for them to be like here's some deals if u sub before may 31st when they're launching this like.. near the end of a month rather than the start of one IF anyone DID want to sign up or had apprehensions about signing up until a bit of time has passed to get reviews of people who sign up early and want to pay for the single sub to try it out and might still want that deal before the end of may and MIGHT not be able to renew a sub in time? unless they can just pay before the current sub runs out idk. not that enough people are gonna pay anyway but why release a monthly sub based thing with a week left of the current month.
many viewers have also made a point that many of them only watch like one or two of their running shows, they don't even watch all the shows they decide to up load new content for. (which seems to have no rhyme or reason to which ones stay active or not bc i thought they were only doing 4 of them but seems they at least have kept 2 more i hadn't even seen new content come out for recently as well but i also don't watch them so i was unaware)

Everyone understands the drive to make better and bigger shows, but they've been doing that successfully for the last 4 years and had almost 3 million subscribers and growing month on month at a steady rate, 12K Patreon members while rarely promoting it, merch, live ticketed shows...
It makes no business sense to burn down what was already working. They even admit in the video over and over again that it WAS working. They WERE doing what they wanted to do. They WERE growing and making bigger and better shows.
I don't know what drove them to do this but it's disingenuous to claim it's because they couldn't do what they wanted to do when we've all been watching them doing what they wanted to do with more success than 99% of RUclips creators. By their own admission they've been doing great.
I just can't make the math work in my head. They're burning down all their revenue streams on a whim, on a belief that somehow people are willing to pay $60 a year for one RUclips channel. They haven't considered that probably 50% of their audience isn't even based in the USA, so economically a large number of their fans are already priced out.

Gosh.... I am very happy for them. I am happy to join the streaming platform. I did. Content costs a fortune to make. If you don't want to pay to watch something, you don't have to. RUclips takes a huge cut of any revenue made. So... I think good on them. I pay for Netflix, Stan, RUclips Premier and more. I do that because I do understand how production costs money. If I want to watch great content. I don't mind paying for it. It cost me 40 bucks for an annual subscription.. I pay more than that for takeaway for the family in one night. So.. I think people need to settlle down. You don't want to pay to watch what they do. Don't. Find someone else to watch. Simple.

As a subscriber not from the US (I’m from Singapore), the fact that their pulling the plug on RUclips and putting it up behind a paywall, well…when they made the announcement about leaving RUclips, I kinda accepted that I won’t be seeing them anymore. I felt that I don’t wanna pay for a service so niche on top of my other personal expenses. I’m not sure about how the international audience felt.

Uploading to RUclips where you have free storage, free content distribution, and a larger audience vs having to pay for each of those. On site and cloud storage isn't cheap, the high bandwidth traffic isn't cheap, the website maintenance will be an issue, and they will have to deal with actually collecting and keeping credit card numbers and other personal information safe.

One of them states "all of my heroes were on RUclips." Really? None in books, no heroes in their families, our history is loaded with role models. But they got their heroes from people goofing off on YT? YT was not designed for people to become superstars. It happens but that should not be the goal. I realize people have to make money to live but we're all being soaked enough via this, Amazon, cable, etc. Maybe Watcher's costs are so high because they subtly boast in the opening about their Hollywood office, their big staff, etc, with weepy, sad music underneath, hard to have sympathy, guys. Move to a non-glamourous location, cut down on staff, and actually concentrate on quality. Personally I have watched them since Buzzfeed Unsolved, but they still aren't above veering off into jokes about farting, genitalia, viewing old history with 21st century eyes, veering off the subject for endless minutes with dirty jokes, none of that is professional. As for Shane being roped into Buzzfeed shows, you could tell that last season that he was truly obnoxious and hated what he did. I enjoy the Watcher subjects despite the childish bits we have to sit through, but times are hard enough. I pay for Amazon hikes every year, I give a bit of money to a few channels by people I like who DON'T do this for a living, they have outside jobs, & sacrifice their free time to do good videos. These two could move out of a pricey Hollywood building and cut a few people. How many do they need to research and draw cards to hang on a board? And we all know what happens when a sub starts. $4.99 now, $6.99 next year, etc.

The fact they already have patreon and don’t promote it. if they used that platform instead of adding another one, they wouldn’t have gotten such backlash. They have nearly 12k members so why didn’t they focus on expanding that? It just seems like greed to most of us. I love Ryan and Shane but this was not it and Steven isn’t entertaining enough to make fans stick with him. They should have done a survey first before slapping us with their video. It’s upsetting tbh. Idk if I can continue to support them :/

But anyway, I thought about if they'd also make a deal with Amazon or something like what Discovery+ does or KOCOWA+ or other platforms like that. I know their Unsolved stuff is on Amazon Prime but I just looked to see if maybe they were going to do what the examples above did as well to make a little more $.

While almost everyone could theoretically afford $6/month, virtually nobody can afford to pay $6/month for EVERY channel they watch on YT! For me, that would be over $600/month. I use Patreon to support less than a handful, and of those I'd only pay to subscribe to one of them (Podcast of the Lotus Eaters).

I was looking forward to the content they have been teasing. Such as the new ghost files. But I wont be watching any of that now I guess... the annoying part is some of my favourite content is the simpler stuff, mystery files is by far my favourite.

I’ve been a fan since before Shane joined Unsolved. That being said, I don’t know that they had a patreon, I didn’t see it advertised. If they could walk it back, they should. Would they have been offered a large sum to host their videos elsewhere and that’s what made losing a percentage of fans worth all this? I hope they reconsider, I love their content, but I don’t support this business model.

  • @theoccultlifemedia

Okay… so interestingly enough we want to eventually build our own platform as well. It will have more content etc. but we want to make ours $1 a month or $5 a year. So… if we have a million subscribers (let’s just say) they can get a lot more for nearly nothing. We will still have content on RUclips. But if people want more and better then can follow to a platform with no ads at all whatever. And we want to do it for nearly nothing because let’s just say a 4th of the million people pay for a year… that’s still $1 million. It’s not a cash grab. But that’s a lot of money. We will share equally with anyone involved. We don’t want millions. Just enough to live and do bigger and better investigations and experiments. I think $5.99 a month is crazy. $60 a year is crazy. You don’t have to gouge people. Right? I’m not sure what went into this decision. But yeah. If we do it, if we get to that point; we want it to be super affordable. And more like our own private membership. I’m sure that this will not work out the way they like.

Hell yeah, J-Carts! I also love Coffeezilla and Nostalgia Critic! I think it would at least be good for them to give free subscriptions to those who were paying to be members on their youtube channel and patreon. But still, yeah...this really sucks for everyone who supported them. I think they will have some people follow them over to the streaming service, but their audience will be way smaller- at least at first. People who can't afford to monetarily support people they love just won't be able to do it. People like me. I wish I could monetarily support you and other cool peoples, but I can only support by ringing the bell, liking videos and commenting so the algorithm is appeased. They're ditching people like me.
