When deciding the price of something you made, i think it should go like this: How much did the materials cost? How much time did it take to make? How well done does it look in your eyes?
$50-$60 would be appropriate for this kind of cake in the current economy. After all, it is fresh baked and custom made. You also should take into consideration factoring in the hours you spent on it from start to finish and the cost of your ingredients per cake. Don’t be afraid to price higher than retail because after all retail is a streamlined process made to be cost effective. If they wanted cost effective they could go to the supermarket and have something written in a sheet cake. It’s nice to be generous but you also need to pay yourself respectfully!
You have to think about the longevity of your business and not just how much money you can make that day. Someone will buy it for 50-60 but they probably aren’t going to come back because it’s too expensive. If it’s the first cake you made you should be more focused on exposure and trying to get recommendations while you improve.
@@ggallin5080 50-60 dollars is not expensive for this cake. Id say its a fair price. Even though the ingredients are probably no more than $20, Decorating a cake, even a very very simple one like this is a very lengthy process. The lady asked her to make a cake last minute too and seeming that she probably has other cupcake orders to fulfill shes going to have to put them off to make this cake.
@@stichexsperament6263 definitely expensive, in the uk thats like £40 for a cake, can literally get a store bought cake for £10 or 12$, one of that size and custom here would be like £25
That's beautiful. Most cakers usually charge per serving and the amount of work it would take to complete the project. They may also include if they need a helper to help them complete the order or design.
Same lmao. A cake with a simple design like that would be $12, can be pushed up to $15 because it's a last minute request but any higher than that would be considered overpriced.
$45 is actually incredibly reasonable, especially when it is done at the last minute and factoring in all costs. I would expect to pay as much as $60 plus a tip. Butter is expensive these days, lol.
When I was still in high school, my art teacher told me that the way I price my art pieces was a reflection of how I valued my art and tbh I didn’t quite understand what she meant until today. I'm a baker and have been selling cakes since 3-4 years, so here's what I'd tell you; you need to weigh in the amount of each ingredient that goes into your cake and calculate how much you've paid, next comes your electricity, water etc bills that you'd have to take into consideration, then you have to charge for the labour cost like how much time and effort is going into the particular cake that you're working on, next you have to draw out your profit and charge for the type of packaging as well Hope this helps.
Genuinely asking why would you calculate the cost of your bills to charge someone for a small business. I understand the ingredients and stuff but Idk about the rest
@@SuperCuttie2011 You need to pay yourself too that's why. Agreed. Technically this is a multi tiered cake, and you did a beautiful job right out of the gate, and the 45 is kinda low, but it might be okay given your area, costs of ingredients, your over head and time spent. Keep going, your doing great!! ( I am an ex pastry chef)Hint, call around to other bake shops and compare your items with theirs, and check out the restaurants too. People usually don’t mind giving out info for beginners.
It looks phenomenal, me and my mama used to bake cakes for a living! The only tip I'd have is to flatten the cakes with a slicer, to make the tops even that way there will be little to no wobble and you won't have to use any dowel rods for structural integrity
If you go on Pinterest theres pricing templates that may help you with pricing, they’re usually per slice, size, and how many tiers. I hope this helps!
The cake is absolutely gorgeous and you’re only going to get better with more practice. $45 was a very safe price point, but I’d suggest raising it like so many others have mentioned. Even nasty box store cakes are more than that! I’m so happy for you and the next chapter of your business ❤️
Not sure what it’s like in the USA but store bought birthday cakes of all amazing designs, (taste alright too) start from £5 here in UK Your cake is obviously worth more than that. Your price point is ok 😊 but people online can tell you to raise your price but they’re not the people buying them. The last thing we want to happen is you overprice and turn away possible business before you start if that makes sense… genuine advice x Give yourself an hourly wage based on your skill level (be kind but realistic with yourself) and then add the price of ingredients and extras needed for the cake then boom, a respectable affordable price.

@@duderchick85 yeah if you're serving day of or use box cake mix / have shortening in your mix, but using some s.s. is an opportunity to add moisture if needed AND flavor - it doesn't have to be plain + can ensure even moisture like if your outer edges over cooked a bit. You need to find out how much each ingredient costs to make that certain cake and also add in an hourly rate. Custom cakes are hard to make and are so worth the money. Break down the cost of your ingredients down to the per teaspoon measurement. For example, a whole bag of flour cost $5 and you use 2 cups for a cake, how much do those 2 cups of flour cost. And so that for each ingredient so you make a profit or at least break even
Gorgeous, you are worthy of your hire. I think each cake will take you higher and higher! The Joy of the Lord be your Stength, Little Sister! Great job! Honestly, last minute I would have paid up to $100 dollars.
The cakes Around me cost closer to $60-$80 for that size cake (from home bakers not bakeries). Don’t be afraid to charge sis. You did great ❤️ If you were close to me I would definitely be a customer!
I would definitely reccomend calculating the price of the supplies and materials you used for the cake and use that as a base price. From there you can add more onto the price depending on the amount of labor that was required to bake and decorate the cake. If it was a super easy cake that took very little time, you could just take the price of the materials and add a couple bucks onto it and be fine. But if it was a really difficult cake, you could add quite a bit more. It all depends, but you should definitely charge by how much materials were used at the very least.
A couple of bucks? No, if she’s making a business she is worth the time, she needs to charge over what she’d be getting making regular wages, a cake designer needs to charge what her products cost plus 20/hr 30/hr 40/hr etc. depending on complexity and her skill level, it’s incredibly time consuming to bake and decorate a cake and a lot of skill is involved, plus simple for her is not simple for regular joes, she spent a lot of time honing those skills and deserves a good pay to do a good job
^ I agree with the person above. Nobody should ever charge “a couple of bucks” over materials - that’’a suggesting they should work for free, which is silly, no matter how “easy” the design may be. Even the easiest design takes time, utilizes equipment and materials the baker invested into, and utilizes the bakers knowledge (all the time that went into them learning how to decorate) and experience (all the time they’ve spent perfecting their craft) - this is why customers pay to have these things made, because they likely can’t achieve those results at home. It is true that an amateur baker with less education & experience should probably charge less - but a couple of bucks is insulting, suggests their work isn’t worth money, and sets them up to undervalue their skill in the future, which is unfortunately already a problem amongst creative people trying to make a living off their handmade goods.
You go girl ! That cake looked super! I’m sure you have a fabulous cake making career ahead of you and I hope people come to you and you your pockets are full! X

$45 for this cake that was made last minute!! definitely underpriced
I'm a baker and have been selling cakes since 3-4 years, so here's what I'd tell you; you need to weigh in the amount of each ingredient that goes into your cake and calculate how much you've paid, next comes your electricity, water etc bills that you'd have to take into consideration, then you have to charge for the labour cost like how much time and effort is going into the particular cake that you're working on, next you have to draw out your profit and charge for the type of packaging as well
Hope this helps.

Looks great but flavourless
