    My first question is always, How do you poop?? If you're not a para/quadriplegic that question might seem super odd and invasive. But for wheelchair users, the huge majority of us can't use a public restroom to go #2. It requires a commode, medical supplies like gloves, and other things you don't need to know if you're abled body. It's not for the faint of heart 😂

    I understand your frustration with the inaccessible van. I’m a wheelchair user and have lived solo in my van for two years. It took a lot of thought to get the layout to be independent but I’m hopeful you will get there. Cheers.

    Use the wheelchair by my self and life in a van. For information I have only one hand with force. Do everything by your own, then you see how much it is draining and time consuming.

      Thank you so much! Thats what helps a lot is staying positive and embracing life! The goal is to get an under vehicle lift on the sliding door or a hydraulic arm that lifts there but as im sure you know from having a son in a chair they don't make anything cheap. Maybe one day!

    • @carjam49
      @carjam49 Год назад

      @@NicholetteBrian No, they do not make things cheap and finding funding is nearly impossible. Hopefully you can save enough money doing van life to get your lift.

    I’m a wheelchair user too and it can be so frustrating not being able to reach stuff.
    I hope you can get one of those seats that lift out.
    It can be so frustrating not having full independence x

    I've recently got into watching vanlife videos, but I'm also a wheelchair user, so until recently I thought it was impossible for me. I can stand and walk a bit, so a van seems ideal as once inside if things were custom built to the right height and I installed pull down seats in a couple of places (bit of experimentation needed there, my sitting stability has reduced). I recently badly injured my shoulder, which makes it even more appealing as I can barely use my wheelchair independently and home life has become very difficult, I can't even put a load of laundry on, something that used to be trivial. Despite all the "ooh that would be nice" I couldn't live in a van with this injury, because I can't actually drive with it, I can't get my hand high enough to get the steering wheel all the way around.
    I think injuries and health scares are my biggest concerns, for family reasons I'd retain my current residence and be here about half the year, I'd struggle to get reasonable insurance and the UK is soon to lose healthcare in Europe (or has already lost it, thank you brexit). If I was the far side of Europe and something did happen, I don't have a network of friends/family that I could ask to fly out and drive us home! Or it would be unfair to ask.
    Another thing I haven't seen in a video yet is anything about powered mobility aids, I've simply not done the sums, it's definitely possible, but is it affordable....who knows.
    Wanderlust has really hit me lately, I've been through a rough few years, my daughter is off to university in the autumn and the desire to do something just for me is strong and with a progressive condition I can't keep putting it off.

    You guys make a great team. There are so many possibilities to make your van more accessible cheap, easy and quickly. You should check out Matt Tilfords van and how he gets about in it, with a few ingenious little slings here and there, and staggered surfaces its impressive. Also I think getting one of those grabber arms could be really handy in a small place like a van, you could extend your reach by quite a bit. More independence would make a huge difference, I can totally relate to your frustration. Best of luck with the van ❤

    How about lift the wheelchair. So it fits into an inset in the seat and just lift her and the chair on a rail, "into" the seat. With whatever cousins she requires. Space and time saved, I bet a rail would work.

    • @NicholetteBrian
      @NicholetteBrian  Год назад

      Whatever idea we end up going with it needs to allow complete independence so Nicholette can do it on her own (both in the van and exiting the van,) thats what has prevented us from going with a couple easier to do options. A rail is an interesting concept though.
