  • The Sound of Music is now more than 50 years old. For its anniversary we visited Salzburg and met with cast members Duane Chase, Debbie Turner, Nicholas Hammond and Heather Menzies-Urich (who played Kurt, Marta, Friedrich, and Louisa in the classic Hollywood film). In an interview at Salzburg's Leopoldskron palace they describe their favourite and most challenging scenes from the film as well as a few behind the scenes secrets. It is followed by a scene from the 50th anniversary gala performance of the Sound of Music songs at the Felsenreitschule, where 50 years earlier, Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and the other children playing the von Trapp family shot the music concert scene from the film.

    This is brilliant.
It was especially lovely to see Heather, who sadly is no longer with us. She is missed so much. x

❤❤❤I love the Sound of Music very very much ever since I was a little girl. I also watch this movie nonstop every year since I was a little girl. I loved Christoper Plummer and Julie Andrew on the sound of music. And I loved all of their songs. Julie Andrew’s was my favorite actress. I’m 61-years old and I still forever watch the sound of music. I also have The movie of the sound of music. ❤❤❤

Nicholas Hammond is the reason Friedrich is my favourite of the children. He fell in love with acting and Julie after seeing her in My Fair Lady, so he knew who she was when the others didn’t, and for someone who fell in love with Julie watching Sound of Music, I can see that in him when I watch the movie.
Also, I feel like he’s a fanboy for his own movie, which is so sweet.

I had exactly the same feelings in what they mentioned about the film, particularly the songs, when I first saw it back in 1966 in Hong Kong! I felt I was one of them who actually participated in the film! I romantically fell in love in one of the girls in my dreams! The film affected/educated/raised me beyond any descriptions, in terms of English learning, music enjoyment, love, decency, beauty, humanity.... It literally molded me to become who I am today! I am forever grateful to all who produced this film! I love you dearly and I should repeat this a million times to reflect my guts feeling toward you all! This is a great and phenomenal film that is of global and historic significance! Thank you!!!!

How delightful to read your comments about this wonderful movie, relating to the city of Salzburg where I was born. I came to Canada at almost 4 years of age, but was fortunate to spend my 16th year (1965) back in Austria ("I am 16, going on 17" hahaha). About 10 years ago, I spent an entire summer's spare time adapting "The Sound of Music" for my Drama students in S. Korea...hoping to assist the ESL I was teaching them. It was a smashing hit, and I truly believe that these wonderful students from my employer's 17 schools experienced some enhanced and enjoyable English studies. Now, if only I could know how they are doing today with their ESL, and personally/selfishly see my birthplace [just one more time]...I would gather them all up together and show them 'the what and the where' that they accomplished so well :) Your commentary has left me with tears in my eyes, but very magical memories! Lau and Ursula, what both of you said was very true! I’m young and in my teen years and i’ve just watched the film, and I felt like never before! It felt like I’ve found the film that would give me a good childhood, as the film really had so many good moments and lessons in itself and overall the film was just very wonderful. I don’t know if I’m the only one, but whenever i watch the movie I feel some sort of way about life or whatever, haha. Christopher and the children were very great and most especially Julie, and they will definitely have a big place in my heart to look back on as I grow older.

Debbie Turner (Marta) was adorable, the cutest of the kids. I'm crushing on Nicholas Hammond, right now. Duane Chase hasn't changed a bit, he just looks like a grandpa version of his character Kurt, and I wasn't sure who the woman was sitting with them, at first I thought it was Liesl, but it's Heather Menzies (Louisa).

When I lived in LA, Nicholas Hammond came up to my teller post to pay and phone bill - this would have been around 1972, and I didn't recognize hiim. But when I looked at his name, I recognized him and said, "You were in the Sound of Music!" Now, I also had a crush on him from the movie, but I got so nervous, I often wondered what would have happened if I had better kept my cool. He's still very nice looking!

I find these cast reunions of iconic movies and TV shows depressing. While well-meaning, these assemblages serve to remind loyal fans that the passing years have caught up with the actors who portrayed their beloved characters. Classic films and television series are eternal, and those who made them should be immortal, too. Oh! The damnable ravages of time.

When you move, you do pick up the local accent to some extent. My speech has been tempered over the years. I've lost most of my Indiana twang, although my short "a" still sounds Midwestern. Some of my words have a Jersey flavor (we moved to NJ from Indiana when I was 10), but even though I've been a Colorado resident since 1980, I don't pronounce "coffee" as "cahfee". If anything, I'll say, "Cuoffee" - Jerseyish.

Now that Disney owns this film a sequel is not that far-fetched. Seems all Disney does these days are sequels and re-makes. A viable story is not important, sadly though, for this to happen. It’s all about the money. Disney recently made a sequel to Mary Poppins and it did badly. The story wasn’t very good and, as Nicholas Hammond said, you just cannot replace Julie Andrews. Same thing here - they can write a good story but there is no one who can play Maria quite the same way. And the music - Disney’s fatal mistake sans Julie Andrews was not selecting Richard Sherman to write the music. With no Richard Rodgers around there is no one alive that can do the music the proper justice. Not even Richard Sherman.

They also said that Christopher Plummer was a bit serious and reserved so the kids were a bit shy with him, but after they made the movie they realised that isn't his real personality. He was just trying to act like his character all day.

They could do an American girl doll as Julie Andrew's. I grew up with cabbage patch kids but American girl would be more Reebok classic.

except of Charmain (LIesl) I met all "kids". - Fun fact: that musical "Sound of Music" is basicly UNKNOWN in the german speaking area. Not many people have seen it. - Ok...the german dubbed songs are so so so...terrible. - So far I remember it was shown on the german speaking tv in the past 30 years maybe two or 3 times only!!!

Guys, warning. Do not listen or sing sixteen going on seventeen. Cause Charmian Carr who played Liesl sang it because of the movie and died in 2016 going on 2017... You'll get it, it is not a joke.

Have to wonder if the absence of Charmian Carr was due to the effect of dementia, which she was afflicted with?
