Hiyori Sarugaki Hello to you too :)
Eric Forman Konnichiwa.Ginki desu ka?
kinochiwa , Ginki desu.
Eric Forman genki*
As a singaporen Chinese, I hate that some Chinese media talks bad about Japanese culture.these manner deserve most Chinese to learn whether they are from mainland or Taiwan.
"Domo" is a bit too casual and can sound rude depends on how you say it so we don't often use it even between friends or family members.
"Arigato" is very common that you use every day between friends and family. However, it's not a polite expression so please avoid using it when you're talking to someone older or in higher position.
I hope you'll find this helpful! :)
what is the name of the song you use at your intro and at the ending?
I once heard (or read) that "domo" was usually only used by the female gender. I'm guessing this is incorrect? Thank you!
By the way, loved the illustrations of usage. Gave Wonderful reference! Thank you!
Hrm, Question. Is there a phase similar in Japanese to "by the way"?
Domo Arigato Gozaimashita!
Watashi wa kawaii ne?
ありがとう ございました! ^_^
Arigatou gozaimasu Hiroko-sensei! :D
I'm glad I found your videos because my school doesn't teach Japanese. :c

AwesomeTree , same!😂😂
same here 😂
OMG she is so cute :D Japanese is such a beautiful language, though its damn hard :\
Japanese is actually pretty easy compared to English
really :/
but there are 3 writing styles...that itself seems hard for me. anyways i will try harder
Nithya .Varghese go for it!!!!
JJ Sam who is harder, English , spanish or japanese, i am Latin American, so i was born learning spanish then English , my 3rd step is japanese, but if you were born English or japanese, wich would be harder for you ? english or spanish, or japanese or spanish? :>
Hi,
it's a part of certain phrases such as "gomen nasai" and "oyasumi nasai". Please remember such phrases as they are. "Nasai" is a sophisticated ways of saying "do (it)", but it's not often translatable separately when it's attached to other word to form one expression.

I learned so much Japanese in the last 20 minutes from your videos!! thank you Hiroko and your team!!^.^ I wanna visit Japan one day!
I guess watching all that English subbed anime wasn't a waste. I know most of the greetings and all. Speaking and pronouncing it seems easy but remembering how to spell it especially in Japanese is hard...well, for me. I'm Mexican- American for those who are wondering. Yes I do speak Spanish.
Anime= Japanese has never been this easy
Omar Mohy I know right lol.
+PhoenixNation same lmao
Sara Irwin Lol.
same here, I think I learned all these words from anime
i'm obsessed with this music !!
Same here!
Hiroko is my favorite person

Hi,
thank you for a kind note! :)
"sumimasen" is often translated as "excuse me" and those correspond each other in quite much any situations.
"shitsurei" means "being rude", so I think it's "shitsurei shimasu" you wanted to say. It's polite way to say (again) "excuse me" or "pardon me", with the meaning of "sorry to bother you". It's often used when someone enters to boss's office, customer's place etc.

Hi,
thank you very much for a kind comment! :)
Unless we specifically tell you, it's rather formal and "safe to use for anyone". We have informal versions also
included in some lessons, but we usually explain and mention to it so that you wouldn't get in trouble ;)

thank you and im sorry from watching Naruto XD
same lol
Hiroko-sensei, arigatou gozaimasu. Kawaii desu. Hontou ni.
Thank you for teaching me in such a fun way like this.
:)
@cattyshellkirby22 Basically, "sumimasen" is a formal "I'm sorry" which can be used in the workplace or to someone of higher social status than you. It is also used to mean "excuse me" when you're trying to get someone's attention (a waiter etc), or when you bump into someone by accident. "Gomen nasai" is a sincere "I'm sorry" for people who know each other. Hope this helps!

I'm a little confused with sumimasen. If you accidentally hit someone do you say sumimasen or gomenasai?
You can say either one sumimasen and gomenasai basically have the same meaning just different words the only difference really is that sumimasen is an apology by saying excuse me. (Hope I helped)
Hi Shay Doma,
Thank you for posting.
I feel "sumimasen" suits that situation.
If the person you hit dropped a coffe cup, I will say "gomennasai".
Hope this helps you.

so i have a question, if i learned hiragana and katakana will that be enough to write Japanese?.
another question, when do we use hiragana, when do we use katakana, and when do we use kanji? thanks in advance
Hi! I am also studying Japanese and this is what I know so far. Basically you can write everything in hiragana and katakana but it makes sentences very drawn out and long. Katakana is mostly used for words that are outside of Japan like banana or your name. Kanji helps to shorten sentences and make things as specific as possible because some words can mean different things. Hopefully I helped,if I am wrong someone will correct me. I am just learning too. Lol.
foad nassar Hello, foad nassar
Thank you for posting.
Japanese use Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji all three mixed.
You need to learn all three eventually.
like 私はナッサーです。(I am Nassar)

foad nassar Some more thing I wanna add: using kanji also shows the level of education of a person, katakana is also used to express the sounds (onomatopoeia). Hope we all apprehend this language. Lol.
Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com Hello okay first i dont understand which one we use for informal and formal time which one of hiragana and katakana and kanji bo we use for informal and formal times
Kanji is crucial to writing and reading Japanese. But, of course, the most fundamental ones are hiragana and katakana. It inevitably will take time to learn all three, especially kanji. I haven't even mastered katakana yet. 頑張って!
what's with いえ いえ thing ??
いえ いう means like no! no!
Arigatou gozaimasu, Hiroko sensei. I have been learning this online Japanese lesson since the first lesson, and I found that it was pretty useful to me, as it was not too many, and due to that, I can focus on them easily, which speeds up my learning.
We're so glad to hear that!! Thank you for always watching our videos :)

The videos may be old but they are gems! Arigo gozaimas for your creative lessons. Gomen nasai for finding out so late about this channel.
I wanna be Japanese D:
Um. Ok weeaboo..
+Vinny Joy **Otaku
Pugxer no. its racist to say you wanna be japanese. you dont know ANYTHING about japanese culture other than their pretty language and their anime. i bet you didnt know that japan is one of the biggest racist places out there. i bet you dont know jack about their history. you are. RACIST. saying you wanna b japanese is RACIST. just be happy with what you ARE. also "otaku" is an offensive slang word to japanese. if you really wanna be japanese you wouldnt use the word "otaku"
+Vinny Joy Woah, hold up there. Japan isn't that racist. It's not perfect either, I mean the work culture is pretty awful and the declining birth rate isn't great either but there is more to the country than a 'pretty language' and 'anime'. I must agree with you though, saying 'I want to be Japanese' is weaboo like, but it isn't racist. Japanese isn't a race, it's a nationality...
Also, otaku has several different meanings. It's a bad thing in Japan, but in the western world it can also mean a fan of anime.
+Vinny Joy Saying you wanna be japanese just means you want to be it. Not being a weaboo. If the person was japanese, (s) he'd know all these things.
Is it gozaimaS or gozaimaSU?
Ahmad Atari Hello, Ahmad Atari

Hearing someone speak helps a lot in the learning process, and while I took 3 electives of Japanese in high school I forgot some of it. Seeing the big clear letters while someone speaks it is helping me better than just writing stuff from the books I bought at the store. Thanks for these videos! :)
I just wanted to say I'm really improving I also checked out the website and this is the easiest way I'm learning Japanese!!!

Great videos! I have been writing down every Hiragana, romanji, and english thing you have put down. It is good practice for strokes and a good way to remember these phrases.
いえいえ means "no, no" and is used here to mean "don't worry about it" or "don't mention it" or "not at all" when someone apologizes for something. ;)

I come from Hong Kong and I would like to learn Japanese. A lot of Hong Kongers have journeyed frequently to Japan due to its exchange rate. You make learning Japanese easy and funny!
Keep it up.
Thank you sooo much for the videos I love Japan and everything about its culture ( and anime )
@Sniperb0y008 "yo" is a particle used for emphasis, or for when you are telling someone something they don't know. Personally I wouldn't recommend using it after set phrases like "arigatou" and "gomen nasai", as it may come off as a bit too strong.
I tried speaking japanese and my voice automatically comes up to a high pitch I never knew I had before. I LOVE Japanese language! Learning japanese after korean! ❤
ひろこ せんせい, あなた はきれいです。Thank you for this beautiful lesson! :)

no language aide has ever helped me more than this! thank you so much!
Hi,
sorry about that.
"ie ie" is a short version to say "dou itashimashite"; it's actually just a "oh, no" or "no, no" which can be added to "don't worry" or "that's all right".

11 yrs ago? Omg! Such a nice video and the sensei too! I love it!
Thank you very much!! xD
@HajisSaya That's right! :)
Thank you !
The part of "Not her banana" is very cute! haha
Hi there, I just started learning Japanese and I ran into the same problem as you did. After some research I got answers to most of these questions and I'll share them with you :)
First of all, Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana are all used in the Japanese language. and yes, they can be mixed. Kanji are the block characters that such as 水、金、etc. They are usually nouns. ( i get the feeling that they are formal characters, or words with more history.)
