    "Domo" is a bit too casual and can sound rude depends on how you say it so we don't often use it even between friends or family members.
    "Arigato" is very common that you use every day between friends and family. However, it's not a polite expression so please avoid using it when you're talking to someone older or in higher position.
    I hope you'll find this helpful! :)

      I once heard (or read) that "domo" was usually only used by the female gender. I'm guessing this is incorrect? Thank you!
      By the way, loved the illustrations of usage. Gave Wonderful reference! Thank you!
      Hrm, Question. Is there a phase similar in Japanese to "by the way"?

    Hi,
    it's a part of certain phrases such as "gomen nasai" and "oyasumi nasai". Please remember such phrases as they are. "Nasai" is a sophisticated ways of saying "do (it)", but it's not often translatable separately when it's attached to other word to form one expression.

    Hi,
    thank you for a kind note! :)
    "sumimasen" is often translated as "excuse me" and those correspond each other in quite much any situations.
    "shitsurei" means "being rude", so I think it's "shitsurei shimasu" you wanted to say. It's polite way to say (again) "excuse me" or "pardon me", with the meaning of "sorry to bother you". It's often used when someone enters to boss's office, customer's place etc.

    thank you very much for a kind comment! :)
    Unless we specifically tell you, it's rather formal and "safe to use for anyone". We have informal versions also
    included in some lessons, but we usually explain and mention to it so that you wouldn't get in trouble ;)

    @cattyshellkirby22 Basically, "sumimasen" is a formal "I'm sorry" which can be used in the workplace or to someone of higher social status than you. It is also used to mean "excuse me" when you're trying to get someone's attention (a waiter etc), or when you bump into someone by accident. "Gomen nasai" is a sincere "I'm sorry" for people who know each other. Hope this helps!

    so i have a question, if i learned hiragana and katakana will that be enough to write Japanese?.
    another question, when do we use hiragana, when do we use katakana, and when do we use kanji? thanks in advance

    • @RayeDrgn
      @RayeDrgn 9 лет назад +3

      Hi! I am also studying Japanese and this is what I know so far. Basically you can write everything in hiragana and katakana but it makes sentences very drawn out and long. Katakana is mostly used for words that are outside of Japan like banana or your name. Kanji helps to shorten sentences and make things as specific as possible because some words can mean different things. Hopefully I helped,if I am wrong someone will correct me. I am just learning too. Lol.

      Kanji is crucial to writing and reading Japanese. But, of course, the most fundamental ones are hiragana and katakana. It inevitably will take time to learn all three, especially kanji. I haven't even mastered katakana yet. 頑張って!

RACIST. saying you wanna b japanese is RACIST. just be happy with what you ARE. also "otaku" is an offensive slang word to japanese. if you really wanna be japanese you wouldnt use the word "otaku"

    • @animekitty4218
      @animekitty4218 8 лет назад

      +Vinny Joy Woah, hold up there. Japan isn't that racist. It's not perfect either, I mean the work culture is pretty awful and the declining birth rate isn't great either but there is more to the country than a 'pretty language' and 'anime'. I must agree with you though, saying 'I want to be Japanese' is weaboo like, but it isn't racist. Japanese isn't a race, it's a nationality...
      Also, otaku has several different meanings. It's a bad thing in Japan, but in the western world it can also mean a fan of anime.

    Great videos! I have been writing down every Hiragana, romanji, and english thing you have put down. It is good practice for strokes and a good way to remember these phrases.

    いえいえ means "no, no" and is used here to mean "don't worry about it" or "don't mention it" or "not at all" when someone apologizes for something. ;)

    I come from Hong Kong and I would like to learn Japanese. A lot of Hong Kongers have journeyed frequently to Japan due to its exchange rate. You make learning Japanese easy and funny!
    Keep it up.

    @Sniperb0y008 "yo" is a particle used for emphasis, or for when you are telling someone something they don't know. Personally I wouldn't recommend using it after set phrases like "arigatou" and "gomen nasai", as it may come off as a bit too strong.

    Hi,
    sorry about that.
    "ie ie" is a short version to say "dou itashimashite"; it's actually just a "oh, no" or "no, no" which can be added to "don't worry" or "that's all right".

    Hi there, I just started learning Japanese and I ran into the same problem as you did. After some research I got answers to most of these questions and I'll share them with you :)
    First of all, Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana are all used in the Japanese language. and yes, they can be mixed. Kanji are the block characters that such as 水、金、etc. They are usually nouns. ( i get the feeling that they are formal characters, or words with more history.)
