You're an outstanding RUclipsr, and I've been viewing your channel seriously right from your very first video (I was a fan of your online guides long before that). I follow a number of channels devoted to D&D and TTRPGs in general and your content is second to none. You know your stuff and it shows. I think the reason you don't have as many subscribers as some other channels is because you take a more analytical approach which appeals to the smaller subset of players and DMs who like getting into the nitty-gritty of how a system works.

    Chris, I rarely comment, but I want to take the time right now to thank you for putting out such great content (and so often!). I really think that if it weren't for you, I would never have gotten this much into DnD, a which is a staple of my social life right now (especially during COVID times). You taught me, more then anything or anybody else really, how to make great characters, and your insights into the game (and TTRPGs in general) have made me a better player and gave me enough confidence in my grasp of the mechanics to try DM'ing. So thank you so, so much for everything: I've had hundreds of hours of fun, in large part because of all the effort you've put into your videos and your community! I wish you the best in your endeavours. Cheers!

    At the beginning of the year I started to make videos on my homebrew. My thoughts was no one is sharing homebrew via videos and the homebrew we tend to see is trash.
    It was more work than I thought it would be. I work 45h a week sometimes more, play two dnd games a week and spend my days off with my girlfriend.
    Between work, personal times, preparation and day to day life I found myself dreading making a new video. It took a lot of work just to make sure my Homrbrew actually added something people might want, make sure it's edited and balanced properly and than editing the videos. I wish I had more time and the drive to do it. I believe I could go far, I just currently don't have the discipline.
    I watch all your videos. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos and the information and insight you share. Thank you!
    Maybe someday I'll get back to it.

    Thank you for this video, Chris! It's inspiring, insightful, and genuinely helpful, just like all of your content!
    I've really enjoyed your videos - they've been really helpful for me in thinking about D&D and my game. So I'd like to try to be helpful to in you in return, by offering a little insight on 2 of the points you raised:
    1. Stumbling over words: Please don't be too hard on yourself. I've been a professional actor, tv presenter, voiceover artist, and emcee for over 20 years. And I absolutely still stumble over my words. It's what you do next that counts - and it sounds like you already have a good system for making that next take a good one!
    2. Teleprompters: From my perspective, you're doing great without one! Your system - learn a small section, deliver it, learn the next section - is exactly what I used do when I presented for documentary tv, when we were filming on location and couldn't carry a big teleprompter around. You're already doing what's most important - looking into the camera, connecting with us, conveying your joy and excitement for what you're talking about. You've practised and taught yourself to be a fantastic on-camera presenter.
    That being said, if you'd *like* to have a teleprompter (cos it could simplify your workflow, or it would just be fun to try), there are apps/programs you can put on your PC screen, or your phone or tablet. I've used an app on my tablet for professional jobs when they didn't have budget/foresight to get a teleprompter in.
    Thank you again, Chris! Looking forward to your next video!

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  2 года назад +1

      I may just do a teleprompter at some point. They aren't that expensive and you just fit a tablet in them to make them work. Maybe if I decide to do more "on camera" videos I might at some point. The apps for PC don't really work for me because as long as I'm looking at my screen, I'm not looking at the camera.

    As someone who has recently started a cartography patreon, this video vibes to me so much. I actually am taking care of my two kids (both under 4) during the day and then working and making maps every night and weekend. The grind is so real!
    You are on my short list of Patrons to support once I have some more funds on my own. Love your content and want to help and support however I can!

    Chris, Chris here. Long time follower, too poor to be a patron (I am sorry). You know what pays less? Acting. I made the choice to be an actor long ago. If I get a gig that isn’t volunteering once a year I am lucky. So I can not quit my day job. I live in the midwest US and I will not move to either coast. So acting is a hobby at best. I am also a Jack-of-all trades master of none! So having a niche you are good at is your saving grace.
    This is an awesome video because you covered everything everyone needs to hear.
    You are the every man for all of us. And this is why I follow you.

    I really wanted to comment on the patreon topic: I go to patreon or kofi, etc. whenever I see someone passionate and with integrity at work. I don't care about the rewards. I'll look at what I can spare when I set a sourcebook or video game I wanted back for a month or two and have the budget to support for a year. I want creators to be as free from hustle as realisticly possible to focus on their strength and expression. Thank You for sharing your insights and your path. D&d is for everyone, RUclips creator maybe not is the perfect summary to your presentation. Cheers and Enjoy the Game!

    Thank you! I wanted to let you know that after more than a year of deliberation and several views of this video, I decided to try my own RUclips channel. Unfortunately, it's not D&D (that's why it took so long). As much as I love D&D, I just don't have a unique enough perspective on it (my approach to D&D is too much like Colby at D4; love his videos). Maybe someday I'll find my niche for a D&D channel, but for now I'm doing Minecraft. Feel free to take a look. First few videos, good or bad as they may be, are already up for viewing. Thank you for this wonderful information and for your wonderful channel.

    I've worked in online advertising since 2000. I never though that I'd see Treantmonk talking about this wild industry. I've seen monthly checks cut for individuals that are over 7 figures. But I've also see those same individuals get less than 4 figures a year later.

    This is why I don't understand those people who comment complaining if a video is padded a bit to hit a target length (used to be 10 minutes, but I believe it's 8 minutes now), or complain if the creator asks people to subscribe/hit the like button. I see a lot of "everyone else does that, be better" type comments in that regard, but a video hitting that threshold or getting a few more subscribers might be the difference between the channel existing or not. There are already enough YTers who switch to negative topics to get views, so I'd gladly support someone who continues to follow their vision but they ask me to subscribe or their video is 30 seconds longer than it "should" be.
    Re: YTers going "negative" for views, that's a different topic entirely, unfortunately it tends to really work. I don't blame people for dong it, I just stop watching if they do.

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  2 года назад +1

      I don't bother with the "subscribe and like" bit because I figure everyone already knows I would like them to do that, but I have no problem myself when youtubers do that.

    • @andrewshandle
      @andrewshandle 2 года назад

      @@TreantmonksTemple Yeah, exactly. I honestly have no idea if asking even works, but a creator spending all of 10 seconds to ask doesn't negatively effect my life in any way. 😀

    Hey Chris, Wow. this was really informative, as usual. The amount of parallels between being a RUclipsr and an actor was surprising, but... well actually not that surprising as both careers are basically running a business. I'm glad that being a RUclips subscriber you get a cut when I watch your videos. I'm curious to know - do you get a percentage if a RUclips subscriber watches your video before it is set up for monetization? Also I believe there are some reasonably priced (and simple) prompter apps that can be used with a tablet or your computer.

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  2 года назад +4

      No, if a video is not monetized, there's no earnings from RUclips premium either.
