im learning how to sing and i was wondering; does anyone know about patrick's technique? some solid info about he creates the pressed high notes consistently and also about the grit in his voice? his voice has to withstand alot on a regular basis and theres no way that hed strain his vocals
Not exactly in this song, but it comes from Fry screaming. The grit he's doing comes from singing the note cleanly, then using vocal fry to compress it into a half scream in more high notes.
In this song in particular, there's no use of this technique. He's just putting extra oomph into his voice which makes this "grit", since he's comfortable singing on the constant A4 high note in "so i can FEEL you, BE MY THIRD DEGREE" (every word that hits the A4 note is in caps). You can try this by yourself, by finding a comfortable note and trying to sing it out with a lot more air and a bit more of push, and it'll start sounding a bit more raspy.
Older songs like Nineteen, and newer songs like Skin To Skin showcase his very incredible use of mixing his vocal fry with his chest voice, similar to vocalists like Chester Bennington.
