I met Mike Lozano and Phil Thomas when I was in 4th grade and hell bent on being a meteorologist. Then along came advanced algebra and those dreams were dashed. OY! Mike was a fantastic guy and very eager to have such an eager young guy in the studio. He was fantastic. It turns out that Phil Thomas is the uncle of a boy that was in my class, B.J. Hesse. BJ and I were friends all through school but I didn't know Phil was his uncle. The good ol' days of simple news. Great memory!

Oh wow. Def not one of my Emmy-winners. That was one of the first investigative (such as it was in Des Moines) pieces I did. But what a hoot...right down to the Corolla I used to drive! What else have you got in your basement, Brian? Thanks so much for this! All of my VHS tapes disintegrated before I got them to DVDs. Now my 3 daughters can see what I used to do for a living. ;)

WHO news team was a class act. I enjoyed seeing Jim Zabel in his prime.

He sort of reminds me of Dave Schwartz from The Weather Channel! RIP, my friend!
And of course, Mike Lozano went on to KCCI for a number of years in the 1990's.

I graduated from Iowa State University in Ames in August of 1977 and recall a female anchor working with Paul Rhodes on KCCI Channel 8 at the time. Also, WOI Channel 5 then in Ames and operated by ISU also had female anchor(s). So WHO may have been the only network affiliate in the Des Moines market without women at the anchor desk on the evening news. Jack Cafferty who had earlier worked at WHO-TV went on to WNBC/4 in New York where I saw him in the 80s (I have been in CT since then) and later on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.

We paid big bucks for that. Management put in writing we had to do that to keep the hair out of our eyes. Seriously! :)

For a person like me, who appreciates history, I do love the upload. Plus, Scanimate and Chromakey was very much in fashion in the 70's and the 80's.

I was 14 when I was in the Area 11 Spelling Bee. Phil Thomas was moderator. I got his autograph. Don't remember Greg. Mike is still around. Jim passed away just recently-in his 90's. One notable comment: It's 1977. No "chicks" on this newteam.lol.

At that point there were at least two female Photographers on the team, carrying 50 pounds of equipment along with the men.

Thanks so much for the info!! I've been looking for this theme for a few years. It was used by my hometown station WBRE Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA for its Eyewitness News newscast from 1977-1980' ironically while its competitor, WNEP was using Move Closer To Your World for its NewsWatch 16 newscast. Thanks again!
