John Salley shared his thoughts on controversial comments made by Dr. Umar Johnson regarding rapper Eminem. Johnson had suggested that Eminem couldn't be considered one of the greatest rappers because he's not Black. @@gmain1977They do, but rap has been obsessed with Italian gangster culture for most of its existence from the late 80s to this day, and earlier and iconic rap beats used a ton of European and other influences: Planet Rock a kraftwerk sample, Next Episode was basically just a loop from a piece composed by a scottish film actor of all places and basically the entirety of Bounce music and the New Orleans rap that came after used variations of the theme music from Dragnet. Hiphop is a cultural collage, invented by black americans but influenced by culture from all around the world.

I think Em is inarguably one of the greatest, yeah not the greatest, but to not include him as one of them is sort of ridiculous. I was the perfect age to love him when he came out, like 15 or so but the older I get the less I listen to to his new stuff. But the same can be said of almost any rapper whos been out that long. The run he had when he was basically the biggest star in the world, critically and commercially, was only a few years but it was absolutely legendary. What he has done since, that VERY few rappers have done at his age, is remain popular with a lot of kids, even of todays generation. Thats mostly to do with how cartoonish and adolescent he is even at 50 years old 😅. But the list of big name rappers who have held the publics attention for this long is VERY short. Obviously not as big a name, but Ghostface had a solid ten year run, from his first album right through to Fishscale, Drake must be like 15 years deep, and Future is about the same. Though almost no one would call him the GOAT, Kanye has had the longest and most consistent run of all time commercially and critically. Hes pushing 20 years and only really fell off after Ye (which I liked). But in terms of overall impact Em is up there with Tupac. Not saying hes the same caliber, but he was an undeniably big influence on Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Kendrick, JCole, Cordae, and TONS of pretty big name rappers I dont like (Logic, Joyner, Hopsin). But the influence on (early) Kendrick and J.Cole alone kinda makes it impossible to deny his footprint.

In terms of deep subject matter delivered impeccably, Kendrick, Andre 3k, Lupe, Nas and prolly Biggie, at least for my generation or back as far as the 90s. . But Im fairly ignorant further back than that so not saying those earlier guys couldnt be better. To me Earl Sweatshirt is up there with the greats when it comes to true depth in songwriting but I know that would seem laughable to a lot of people.

So what? I listen to a ton of Future, Chief Keef and Gucci in the car and I know they play those guys, especially Future like crazy in the clubs, even now. I vibe with Future, Thugga and Sosa more than almost any other rappers these days but thats about sonics and feel. I dont pretend their the best rappers but they make some of the best music. Drake is a club staple and hes (almost) as embarrassing to listen to as Em and has been for a long time. Last album of his that was truly fire was If Youre Reading This its Too Late and that had a ton of ghostwriting and was basically just an american doing UK style rap. Do any clubs play J.Cole? Cos he isnt held to that standard.

Waynes mixtape run around 2005 right up to No Ceilings is my fave hiphop run ever. And as a wordsmith hes become even better. He had another run almost a decade later, it was just that people didnt catch it. That last album Funeral was epic. Agree about his albums. I barely listen to any of them after Carter 2. His most recent Funeral was fire though. A few duds but the best songs were amazing. The song Funeral is one of his best and Ive been listening to him for almost 20 years.
