Please, don't buy into the marketing hype. Epic is great at selling things. Now, I'm not in any way saying that Unreal Engine is a poor product. However, it has had some profoundly serious drawbacks over the years. It has been horrible at building open world games. Now with Unreal Engine 5, they have made significant changes with features like Lumen and World Partition. They are responding to that feedback. However, go and look at previous tech demos for Unreal Engine 4, and show me where we reached those high of highs. Development studios build custom engines, because the out of box solutions tend to be pretty designed around mainstream features that cover lots of diverse types of games. It's the common scenario of jack of all trades and master of none. It also puts Epic in the driver's seat about when you can use new features and technologies like RTX or Fidelity Super FX 2.0 or DLSS. Consider that 100% of lighting and shaders are then controlled by Epic, which is a blessing and a curse. Let's say their out of box solution for time of day doesn't suit your games needs. What are you to do? There is a marketplace of extensions, but they can't change the core features of the engine, so you have to wait for Epic to be more flexible in their controls. Selecting Unreal Engine isn't about opening up what you can do, it's about accepting what you won't be able to, and trying to fit your game in that box. The plus side, is that if you can accept all the drawbacks, you can build games much much faster.
Oh yeah let's start the hype to have another cyberjunk
@@rapidrabbit11485 dude what are you talking about, the engine is open source, that's means the code is available to anyone to do as they please...MK 11 uses a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3, I guess u didn't know that?..most AAA game studio can take unreal engine source and customize to for their projects...Hype??..u think unreal engine is all hype??..have u tried the engine??.. As much as their RED Engine was beautiful, giving Cyberpunk one of the best looking cities and environments I’ve ever seen.. it was plagued with issues which like he says couldn’t be easily fixed and they were the only people in the world who could fix it. Now with Unreal Engine there are thousands and thousands of people who use it, also with Epic providing their own in house tech support if needed. This is undoubtably the best choice CD Red could have made in order for their next game to be a success both visually and technically. They made a big mistake last outing, but here’s to hoping these guys can continue to let us explore these wondrous worlds they create with less issues. I’ll be keeping my eye out.
It wasnt the engine, it was the little time they had to finish it being pushed by their sponsors. That engine takes RTX to a whole new level and is very capable.
@@floatingrabbit3556 little time they have to finish it? The game was announced in 2013.
@@diegomedina9637 Serious production didn't begin until middle 2016 after Witcher 3's last DLC was released. The devs thought the game wouldn't release until 2022 but corporate pushed for a 2020 deadline.
@@floatingrabbit3556 the Red engine was one of the main issues. The team had to constantly keep updating the engine just for it to run Cyberpunk 2077. The Red Engine wasn't made to handle a game like Cyberpunk 2077.
The Witcher 3 came out at release date as a masterpiece, look back at any review and people will barely mention bugs, but with Cyberpunk thats mostly what everyone was saying at release.
So they were able to release a full glorious looking game with The Witcher but could not with Cyberpunk, the reasons for that are more than "ow their engine was bad".
