GSG9 do not fight organised crime, they do not carry out investigations, they are special units whose task it is to rescue German citizens from dangerous situations worldwide, e.g. in the event of terrorist attacks - the KSK of the Bundeswehr is responsible for rescuing hostages in war zones - while the GSG9 is responsible for rescuing hostages in non-war zones..

In Germany, there are different police authorities. The highest is the BKA (Federal Criminal Police Office). It's like the FBI. Then all federal states have the LKA (State Criminal Police Office). The Federal Police is responsible for the borders of airports and train stations. Then there are the state police, who are responsible for traffic accidents, thefts, etc. SEK units have both the federal police and the state police. The GSG (Border Protection Group 9) to the Federal Police. They are already very military trained, like the KSK from the Bundeswehr

Started as an anti-terror unit. But over time grew into an elite tier unit like other countries have them. Cause of the german "grundgesetz" that did not allow army units to be used abroad, especially not on short notice, they made it a police unit at that time.

In Germany there is a separation of police powers, as has already been written. The Bundeswehr may only be deployed abroad, in the FRG it only has to deal with disaster control and national defense. Customs and the Federal Police have more specific tasks. The GSG9 is the abbreviation for Border Guard Group 9. It was founded because in the attack at the Olympic Games, the responsible state police at the time had brought about deficiencies in their ability. At that time, the GSG 9 was secretly founded. The first commander was Ulrich Wegener. The first mission was the hostage rescue in the hijacked Lufthansa plane Landshut in 1977. During the liberation operation in Mogadishu, none of the hostages were harmed Which still seems like a miracle today. In addition to Ulrich Wegener, the crew members of the Landshut also became heroes at that time, first the flight captain Jürgen Schuhmann, who was shot by the hostage-takers because he had tried to find a solution for a good end in the interest of the passengers with those responsible. Also the co-pilot Jürgen Vitor. Who survived the 5-day kidnapping. There are some documentaries on RUclips . ruclips.net/video/OuTwalK6wgM/видео.html

The GSG-9 is technically a federal police force. They had to be established outside the military because the German constitution does not allow the use of military on home soil unless there is a war going on. Police units are usually under the command of the respective federal state, but some, like the BKA (Federal Office of Criminality) - the German equivalent to the FBI - or the GSG-9 are commanded by the federal government. As an addded bonus of them not being part of the military, the government can - and has done so - deploy them for anti-terrorism missions abroad without asking parliament beforehand. Deploying military anywhere outside NATO territory, without parliamentary consent is also forbidden by the constitution.

Imagine the FBI had a Delta Force, 75th Ranger Regiment, or Navy Seals... thats what the GSG9 is combined in "one" unit...
They do stuff the Armed forces arent allowed to do, because of politics.. kinda.. they are used for Anti Terrorist and against mayor organised crime...
Armed Forces special units are more for War conflict zones.

No, the older guy in the end was one of the first operators assigned to GSG 9 during initial formation. The founder and first commander of GSG9 was then Colonel Ulrich Wegener. He proposed the formation of a special unit after the disastrous outcome of the terrorist attack during the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich. Wegener handed over command in 1979 and left the Federal Police with the Rank of Brigadier General. General Wegener died in 2017.

The police structure in Germany it's aittle bit different then in the USA. You have several federal agency's like FBI, ATF etc
The you have state troopers etc.
I Germany the federal police is mainly guarding the borders airports and train stations. But also responsible when there are multi state investigations. So it's like a mix of your border patrol and the FBI. The GSG9 is a special unit founded as antinterror unit and also used for arrests in organized crime. But they are also allowed to react outside of Germany (what police force normally is not allowed to)
Then we have the LKA wich is the state police in every state. They are mainly the link between the local police and the BKA(short for the German federal police) but they also investigate in organized crime drug and counterfeid money.
There are a few more like "bereitschaftspolizei" etc but I general that's it
O btw the voice in the clip is the German voice of Optimus prime

It's a kind of Special Ops Team with tasks like anti-terror, hostage-events, abductions or hijacked planes and vessels.
Eventually they may be overwatch or close back up in very certain political events They can be deployed worldwide against international criminal organisations involved in very heavy stuff like human trafficing for abuse/sexual exploitation or major drug and arm dealer.
Americans may see them as a kind of specialised SWAT specific for heavy FBI duty and CIA purpose.
