Seriously...even our power users looked at me like I was nuts, when I showed them this. I concluded the conversation by saying, "Just switch back to Classic to do it". They agreed. Let's hope the Salesforce teams come up with a better way to do this in Lightning...this is pathetic.
Thanks Jodie! I have a glitch of my own - the matching and duplicate rules are active but not showing up to create a duplicate record set! Logging a case, but can't wait to see this in action. I'm wondering if this has to do with the Duplicate Jobs not working unless we have Performance or Ultimate. :) For now I'm headed to Classic...
Yeah, when Duplicates fire is a huge issue. They only fire when one of the fields in the Matching Rule is Modified and there is an active Duplicate Rule in place. I always set up Duplicate rules to Alert rather than Report - it won't create a duplicate record item unless you have Alert set on the Duplicate rule. But yes, the fact that we STILL don't have Duplicate Jobs in EE is just so bad!
To delete the Account there is a delete button in the buttons on the top right hand corner. If you do not see the delete button you may not have access to delete. And if you can't delete, then you can't merge. Or the delete button may have been removed from the page layout.

There's no such thing as Potential Duplicates component now.
