Watching this again. Everytime I put this film on, I can't believe I've missed so much in this movie, yet am only half an hour in. Honestly, this is the best film I have ever seen. And I'm proud that I have watched this at least a dozen times.
I saw this movie several times since my youth and I can see it again. It is old, it is B&W, it is complete Japanese but is incredibly moving and you feel lots of emotions. For those who did not see it, do not hesitate. You will not loose your time.
Once in a lifetime there comes a motion picture which changes the whole history of motion pictures. A picture so stunning in its effect, so vast in its impact, that it profoundly affects the life of all who see it. One such film is...
The greatest adventure film of all time .With an incredible depth to the characters and story .Floors me every time i watch it. Its a cliche but they really dont make films like this anymore.
Yeah, i was real young when i saw this movie too, like 7, i didn't understand it then. I saw it again like 15 years ago when i was 20. It's my all time favorite movie...perfect story, characters, plot...everything. I can never get my friends or cousins to watch this movie with me. They turn it off after 5 minutes. If it isn't color or have english dubbing, they won't watch. They are ignorant. Patience is all it takes. The movie will eventually keep you glued to your sofa.
According to Kurosawa, during a conversation between Hayao Miyazaki, he said he sent all the actors home with their costumes they actually use in the movie and had them wear every day, so they wear naturally to make them look realistic. I think it set the trend for the movies to follow. You can see it in Fistful of Dollar(remake of Yojimbo) and the sequels how dirty the clothes the actors wear, and compare it to the western movies before.
Toshiro Mifune was one of the best actors I have ever seen. His range of emotions was spectacular and his role as "Sanjuro" in Yojimbo and Sanjuro was amazing. So good he inspired "the Man with no name" played by Eastwood. Japanese cinema at it's best. You have got to see Throne of Blood as well, fantastic adaptation of MacBeth.
The video of the shooting site of "Ran" is uploaded. The production method was the same for "Seven Samurai". Please have a look!
this movie is stunning- innovative, beautiful, tragic, great action, humour, brilliant photgraphy.....3.5 hours of greatness... the criterion 3 disc set is beautifully packaged too, i got it a few months ago, you should too- the extras are pretty good but its worth having for the packaging and booklet alone..
This is about one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life, an extremely well set up plot, great footage (although it's only black and white), well planned out camera positions, and great action at moments.
I saw this movie when I was about 16 y.o. back when I had no clue about Japanese history. It completely blew me away and I become totally hooked up on everything from Japan ever since. I am 32 now and I remain a huge enthusiast about Japanese motion pictures, anime, manga and video games. I want to buy this masterpiece. Does anyone know if it's aviable on Blue Ray?
refreshing thing about this classic IMO is that the emphasis is on ACTING not CGI so you actually care about and can relate to the characters regardless of language or cultural differences, and on that note the stunts are not blue-screen wonders either but skilled horse riding and real falls.
This movie is absolutely amazing. It was the first movie to develop plot devices like hiring a group of experts for a dangerous mission (very common today - oceans 11, italian job, etc.) It's either one of the best Japanese films of all time, or simply one the best films of all time. Back in the day, by the way, movie trailers were horrible by today's standards. Now days the trailer is almost a production all on its own.
this was like the 2nd to last film i saw in class (film appreciation). it was good. i like Kikuchyo in the 7 samurai the most. he's kind of like the comic relief. seems like it.
I'm getting this movie for Christmas and this will be the first of Japanese cinema outside of the Godzilla films that I will be seeing. I'm looking foward to getting more into Japanese cinema in 2010 so I hope this is a great way to do it!
Although the film seems to be a bit behind in technological advantages for its time (particularly sound quality), it makes up for it with an intriguing story and interesting characters. The movie is about 3 1/2 hours long, and yet I was left wanting more, a credit to the writing and directing of the movie legend Akira Kurosawa. Excellent acting, score, and sets/props add to this hands-down Japanese classic.
Like a Shakespeare play, this movie presents a panorama of the human condition, what it means to be a human being. A great epic and a noble work of art.
Aside from being a fantastic epic film, I recall seeing Toshiro Mifune's performance in it and thinking this is one of the greatest ating performances I'd ever seen. Still is
Just one thing: the movie is sometimes shown in a much shorter version (basically, all the actions scenes are kept, so the rest is much compressed and loses a lot) Go for the full version.
SIMPLY THE BEST for me, everything about it is class, also you get to understand the social class system of Japan of the time, I think it is based around the 17th or 16th century when there was much infighting between the many rulers, and there were many Ronin (Masterless Samuri) as their leaders were overthrown or killed, and so some formed bandits groups like here on this film !!!
this film hits my top ten film list any teenager should see: 1 Casino 2 Syriana 3 Casablanca 4 Seven Samurai 5 The Good the Bad and the Ugly 6 Wall Street 7 Sideways 8 Natural Born Killers 9 Reservior Dogs 10 Raging Bull
i was just wondering, which one is best of the three movies; Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Sanjoro. I wanted to know because I haven't seen any of them. The latter two are coming to blu ray in a few weeks. So, should I just wait for Seven Samurai, which has no release date, before seeing the other two or just watch these two and then wait for Seven Samurai?
IMO save yourself the money you would spend on film school, and just watch Kurosawa films. He was a master and if you haven't seen High and Low, please do. It's not as well known, but one of his very best.
this movie changed my life. because of this movie, i now gauge the worth of a man by means of stick and doorway. i also learned that 'takashi shimura' is japanese for 'bad-ass'.
Watched the movie online. Very nice one. Midway through it, they put up a board in Japanese. And the board stayed for the next 5 minutes, I think. Seems like intermission was ‘sewn’ into movies back then.
Yojimbo was the first in the series followed by Sanjuro - A Fist Full of Dollars was the First in the 'Dollars' saga which it was, as you say, a copy of Yojimbo. There were legal proceedings filed against Sergio Leone I believe........
@TeddyBearMonsters Rashomon, Stray Dog, No Regrets for Our Youth, Sanshiro Sugata, Sanshiro Sugata Part Two, The Quiet Duel, Vendetta of a Samurai, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo, Red Beard, The 47 Ronin, Gate of Hell, Musashi Miyamoto, Duel at Ichijoji Temple, Duel at Ganryu Island, Samurai Saga, The Hidden Fortress, Tsubaki Sanjuro, Harakiri, Chushingura, Sword of the Beast.. There are alot more than I can list but for now.. this should be a good start.
It's so weird watching a movie where you know all of the people onscreen are allready long dead. The acting was so good, story was very believable. Personally it didn't feel like 3 hours at all.
There have been many remakes but none had duplicated Kikuchiyo character to the level as good as the original. Without the effort by Toshiro Mifune, this movie could be just half as good. The battle ending scene of "Dances with wolves" is quite similar to the battle ending scene of 7 samurai, where the bandits leader on the horse surrounded by villagers before gets killed. I'm not saying which one copied from wich. ^_^
@neverhoodyn well actually they used a digital replacement image on the film balc swan for natalie portmans face while she was dancing the hard moves...
@BassKillerful A lot of the film techniques and plots of Akira Kurosawa's movies greatly influenced western filmaking. Seven Samurai is excellent, but make a lot of popcorn because the unedited version is long.
I cannot express in words how much I love this movie, I don't think there is anything that even comes close to the perfection this movie attained. So instead I'll just give you some interesting piece of trivia which might interest you. SPOILER ALERT Although Heihachi was the first of the seven samurai to die, the actor portraying him was the last of the actors of the seven to die.
legend movie... So old and still a masterpiece today..
Watching this again. Everytime I put this film on, I can't believe I've missed so much in this movie, yet am only half an hour in.
Honestly, this is the best film I have ever seen. And I'm proud that I have watched this at least a dozen times.

watched it 3 times and still see new things in it every time I watch it, Kurosawa's best film by far, just plain awesome

One of my all time favourite films ... that soundtrack gets me everytime.

というかNo.1

this movie is stunning- innovative, beautiful, tragic, great action, humour, brilliant photgraphy.....3.5 hours of greatness... the criterion 3 disc set is beautifully packaged too, i got it a few months ago, you should too- the extras are pretty good but its worth having for the packaging and booklet alone..
I've seen this movie three times and still amazes me
Can't get enough of this movie. I keep coming back to it.
When I see this movie, I laugh, I cry, and I love it.
This is about one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life, an extremely well set up plot, great footage (although it's only black and white), well planned out camera positions, and great action at moments.
My favorite action film bar none.
Thank you Criterion for an outstanding
DVD set.

Yojimbo blew me away. But this movie took me far beyond anything I could ever describe.
This movie is absolutely amazing. It was the first movie to develop plot devices like hiring a group of experts for a dangerous mission (very common today - oceans 11, italian job, etc.) It's either one of the best Japanese films of all time, or simply one the best films of all time. This is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen!
Thank you for uproad♥
I like how when I read comments about Kurosawa films, many of the commenters are working in or on film.
my fav film, fist seen it aged about 10 unforgettable.
Hey! Thx for the tip...i watched it yesterday and i was absolutely amazed! Great movie, loved every secound of it!
I love Kikuchiyo!
One of the greatest movies of all time..
this was like the 2nd to last film i saw in class (film appreciation). it was good. i like Kikuchyo in the 7 samurai the most. he's kind of like the comic relief. seems like it.
I stayed up until 6 in the morning watching this when it was on TV.
I was like drawn into the movie.
Beautiful! Thank You!
Best movie ever, something I like to go back to over and over.
The taiko drums at the beginning are the best opening soundtrack ever.
i still have this on VHS, but i havnt watched in in about 4 years
I'm getting this movie for Christmas and this will be the first of Japanese cinema outside of the Godzilla films that I will be seeing. I'm looking foward to getting more into Japanese cinema in 2010 so I hope this is a great way to do it!

Still is
has anyone seen the criterion commercial using hulu? what is that mysterious sounding song that they use it is soooo familiar!
>本当に燃えてる水車
だから迫力があるのでは?
Best film ever made. Period
Just one thing: the movie is sometimes shown in a much shorter version (basically, all the actions scenes are kept, so the rest is much compressed and loses a lot)
Go for the full version.
I really love this movie but I always wondered why no sound effects were ever made, whenever the samurai swords clashed into anything (or anyone)

The underlaying theme was based on an ancient folk tale
involving the bitter rivalries between the seven tribes of Southern Ireland.
at the moment, i cant afford the Criterion DVD, but is there anywhere i can find a link with English subtitles?
this film hits my top ten film list any teenager should see:
1 Casino
2 Syriana
3 Casablanca
4 Seven Samurai
5 The Good the Bad and the Ugly
6 Wall Street
7 Sideways
8 Natural Born Killers
9 Reservior Dogs
10 Raging Bull
What is the song playing in the trailer? I have an extremely song recognition of it....
i was just wondering, which one is best of the three movies; Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Sanjoro.

IMO save yourself the money you would spend on film school, and just watch Kurosawa films. He was a master and if you haven't seen High and Low, please do. It's not as well known, but one of his very best.
+Chupacabra and Jackie Well, I'm spending money on film school AND watching Kurosawa films! Best of both worlds!
This is really a master piece!
This is one of the best movies in world cinema history. The first time I saw it was a ratty VHS copy from Blockbuster and I was overwhelmed.
Unforgettable faces, unforgettable music, unforgettable film.
A true masterpiece!
Is there a remake coming out?
i heard that thier was?
this movie changed my life. because of this movie, i now gauge the worth of a man by means of stick and doorway.
i also learned that 'takashi shimura' is japanese for 'bad-ass'.
Just finish watching this movie. if you haven't watch this yet, sad life.
Watched the movie online. Very nice one. Midway through it, they put up a board in Japanese. And the board stayed for the next 5 minutes, I think. Seems like intermission was ‘sewn’ into movies back then.
i believe that this is the only film that can rightfully use the word epic
One of my favorite films.
Today its the producers 100th birthday ! x)
Is this the genuine original dialogue? its different on the version ive got
wow, i just LOVE this movie, does anyone else know any other good samurai movies?
one of the greatest film.. kurosawa genius..
It's so weird watching a movie where you know all of the people onscreen are allready long dead. The acting was so good, story was very believable. Personally it didn't feel like 3 hours at all.
I really loved the anime and recently found out that it was based on this movie and am going to check it out.
The last fight shot was took in Winter.Everybody including A.Kurosawa felt very cold.
to all who can receive "ARTE": monday, 8th of march, 20.15. i'm looking forward to see this outstanding movie again.
when does it come out?
Agree! I have the full version 3 hours of my life lost to this movie is well worth it.
one of the best movies of all time.
Akira Kurosawa's estate liscensed it. This movie is also the basis of the western "The Magnificent Seven"
They already made a remake of Seven Samurai, it's called The Magnificent Seven.
I am a staff engaged in taking a picture of this "RAN" record video. Therefore, I feel the mission of which it informs the world. ... (more)
It probably won't be long until it's a Criterion Bluray. They're doing two a month.
Pause this movie anytime. Chances are, wherever you paused, that still would make a great movie poster.
There have been many remakes but none had duplicated Kikuchiyo character to the level as good as the original. Without the effort by Toshiro Mifune, this movie could be just half as good.

i don't believe it is on Blu-Ray yet. Does anyone have any other good samurai movies they would recommend?
@BassKillerful

Its a 3 hour movie and its GOOOOD
This movie so awesome. I own it and have seen it so many times!!
@TheCrimsonsGhosts You still have a laserdisc?!!
i still have it too i mean player and this double disc movie
just bought the update criterion 3-disc yet. FINALLY!!!!
He was also very good in The Hidden Fortress. :)
Movies don't get this close to perfection. The Blu-Ray transfer is worth whatever Criterion is asking for.
