- In this video, I'll tell you the differences between Mainland Mandarin and Taiwanese Mandarin, so that you can make your own choice about which should you study.
It's also a perfect material to learn Chinese as well as for Chinese listening practice.
My daughter has had mainland teachers and taiwan and can understand both. We have friends in Taiwan so wanted to do traditional chinese but finding traditional books and materials is harder and costs more. So for now we do simplified and if she decides to go to taiwan it won't be too hard to pick up the traditional characters. But now my daughter wants to go to korea lol.
The last sentence is such a plot twist😄
@@EazyMandarin she studies her korean diligently but there isn't much materials for kids like with chinese. Chinese is our main focus but I heard a singapore guy say his chinese improved in korea since there were so many chinese students, he was always hanging out with them. So hopefully she can improve both languages if she goes to korea. But that is many years away.

I learned Mandarin in the Philippines, at a school that had Chinese integrated in its curriculum. We had Mandarin lessons from kindergarten all the way up to high school. When I moved to Canada and conversed with some of my friends in what little Mandarin I could remember, they thought I had a "cute" Taiwanese accent. It's probably because the textbooks we used back in the day were imported from Taiwan, and some of my teachers were Taiwanese.

My parents are from Taiwan, and I learned my Chinese in Taiwan. I find that learning Mainland Chinese is more of a business advantage. There's a larger number of people from China. However, traditional Chinese has a lot of benefit for enjoying traditional art and history, and there's a lot of meaning from studying the original character which has the original radicals. I wish Taiwan would switch to pinyin instead of using bopomofo. I also love the way Mainland Chinese sounds, and I wish it would incorporate more of the pronunciation (except for the Ers. I'm not used to that). I wish modern education would teach both simplified and traditional side by side. BTW I really enjoy listening to you speak and how you put sentences together. I think if I listen long enough, I can improve how I structure my sentences.

Excellent video. You were very polite in saying it doesn't matter which Chinese you learn. As a student of 4 years, I will say, it's much more practical to aim for mainland Chinese. Why? The learning materials/textbooks are MUCH more abundant than TW based courses. Plus, more people speak mainland style Chinese. Also, they use Pinyin and TW doesn't.
It's true that if one chooses TW style, it'll be ok too, but if being very practical is your goal, it's better to just aim for Mainland Chinese.
I think this is only true in the beginning. Once you reach a certain level you will have access to more media using Taiwanese Guoyu (i.e. RUclips), online news, Facebook etc. because so much of the Mainland is isolated from Western media. Not to mention, if you learn literature or 文言文 you'll have to learn traditional characters.
Actually, the learning materials for Chinese as a second language in Taiwan do all have pinyin. Sometimes they will also include zhuyin.
This video is just like belittling Taiwanese Mandarin and encouraging people to learn Chinese Mandarin. Not very objective to be honest.

So he doesn't say "Both styles of Mandarin are equally practical" or "Taiwanese Mandarin is more practical", so that's why he's not objective? That's like getting angry at someone for saying "More New Yorkers ride the subway than drive cars". They do...
Mainland Mandarin is _objectively_ more practical and even more popular around the world. You Taiwanese love telling everyone how you're an independent country - well, better accept the fact that your country, despite being fairly prosperous, is still many times smaller of a population and economy than your neighbor to the west. You can't have it both ways: you can't insist on being counted as a separate country, then getting mad when you end up being a much less significant country.

Good summary and great call out to Grade Mandarin Chinese. I learned Chinese when I lived in Taiwan, later joined the Army as a Chinese linguist and learned standard Beijing putonghua and simplified characters. Grace Mandarin Chinese helped me understand distinctions that I heard, but did not realize them.
I agree that Taiwan Mandarin is softer, perhaps more delicate.

If you live in China, learn Mainland Mandarin. If you live in Taiwan, learn Taiwanese Mandarin. That seems to be the simple answer for me.

the big difference is accent , mainland mandarin sounds like england english , taiwan sound like american english
English accents are not comparable to Chinese accents.
When a language is spoken in many countries, beware of local variety. British, American, Canadian Australian English and so on. Brazilian vs European Portuguese.
I've been self studying 普通话 even though I'm moving to Taiwan next year because I think it is going to be very useful to me as a linguist. I plan on picking up the 国语 dialect once I'm there. I've been studying the ways characters were simplified so that I can read both simplified and traditional. My accent will probably end up being more Taiwanese because I plan to pursue more formal 国语 studies with a teacher once I arrive.
I agree with a lot of the points you made about the advantages of learning 普通话。i fell in love with Chinese through a lot of Mainland music and tv shows, which is why I decided to learn it.
I was trying to learn both 😅 but I've decided for now I'll learn Mainland Chinese and pick up Taiwanese Chinese later. I have more friends in China and it's easier for me to read simplified characters. However, I noticed it's sometimes easier for me to pick up on Taiwanese Chinese than Mainland Chinese when I hear it. I had no idea about the softness or southern pronunciation! Thank you for making this--I just subbed. 😊

在台灣我們會說我們講的是國語，台灣國語這四個字通常指的是發音不標準的國語。
I like the many points you found to speak about but I do not see why there is a need to choose because it is the same language.
Simplified characters are easier to write but harder to guess when someone has not seen them before. Also, so many traditional components appear inside simplified characters (as simplification was not homogeneous). In simplified you're learning parts of both subsets regardless.
I learned standard pronunciation first (as a foreigner I do not want to end up pronuncing in a dialectal way), then learned pinyin and zhuyin fuhao at the same time (I prefer zhuyin but can read both), and now I'm learning both traditional and simplified characters (I even created my own prototype to be able to read a sentence on day one and literally guess its meaning without having seen any of their characters before so I could learn more naturally. I created a youtube channel for my masters degree thesis on it, in case someone thinks I'm lying on this).
I do not see why as adults we need to limit ourselves to just one writing system that was used just to spread China's alphabetisation country-wide. We are all educated adults that at least speak one other language before learning Chinese. We're alphabetised already.
I speak Spanish, English, German and Dutch to good levels and I'm still learning new words on them every now and then, even in my mother tongue so why limiting myself to one subset if I will be learning the Chinese language for life?
I do not like to use erhua excesively but I pronounce things with standard accentuation and proper zhi chi shi ci zi r sounds.
I think my approach is different to most out there but I would say it is this way because I do not see learning a language as a race against time else as a life endevour. I do not need to pretend I will learn Chinese in 3 months, I do not need to think that XiaomaNYC is fluent just because he has no shame to pronounce everything wrong fast.
If one wants to learn any language well you'll be learning it all your life, Chinese is no different so why do we need to go for a subset of it? I choose not to.
It is British vs American English in terms of comparison.
Many people like learning american English rather than British One. And many taiwanese youtubers teaching mandarin, almost all of them , soeak with American accent.
Going back to taiwanese and mainla d mandarin, i think it is easier to understand Taiwan mandarin because they don't have Erhuà. Zh, ch, x, z, c, s are not enphasised, unless you want to sound like a northearner. Moreover, politics aside, many westerners had rather go to Taiwan to learn mandarin than to go to Mainland China.
I am from a portuguese speaking country. And i can certainly tell you that this also happens between Brazil and Portugal. When it comes to learning portuguese many prefer going to Brazil, because the Brazilian ACCENT is softer and more gentle than that of Portugal.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t grasp this. Generalizing and laziness gets you no where. Btw I love Brazilian Portuguese, I have a friend en de Janeiro 😊.
我觉得台湾国语是很有趣的，很有幽默感。每个中文学者也该试试学怎么听懂国语，会对听力这个方面有好多的帮忙。比如台湾人说 “好像是的”的时候，他们会发出 “好丧四的”。台湾人也爱讲形容词。一般在句子结尾的形容词被强调了。如果人没有接触过这样的说话方式就会糊涂好多。

我是学简体字的，因为马来西亚和新加坡都是用简体字，来台湾的时候，我还是看得懂繁体字，读是没问题，但写的话，我就只会写简体字。

首先，儿化音并不是只有北方才有，南方川渝的西南官话是有儿化音的（只是西南官话实际上应该是北方方言）
台湾国语也并不是没有翘舌和轻声，标准国语里是有翘舌的。。。

台灣也不是完全沒有輕聲，「的」、「得」、「地」當助詞同時，口語上都還是輕聲，電腦打字也要打輕聲才打得出來。

I studied taiwanese chinese since I was a child. I studied putonghua when I was in my 30s. I find that pinyin is easier than zhuyin even though I mastered zhuyin. But I prefer traditional compared to simplified mainly because that was my foundation. My brain can't seem to accept simplified when I see the characters.
Is there a drawback to trying to learn Taiwanese Mandarin alongside Mainland Mandarin?

As a foreigner living in TAIWAN I can tell you that learning TRADITIONAL written Chinese is much easier than the butchered / simplified version that has been not only stripped of pronunciation blue clues but also striped of meaning... And while he might think Taiwanese Mandarin lacks masculinity, don't worry... Real men use閩南語and I promise it has PLENTY of vigor 😅

I find the suggestion that men not learn Taiwanese Mandarin because it “lacks vigor”, and that women might prefer it because it sounds more soothing, to be very strange.

他以前講的比較像是對於台灣口音的刻板印象。 多多認識台灣的朋友會發現台灣男生講話的方式有很多種。連台灣裡面也會分北部，南部，外省人，原住民，等等。
