This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Plato's Republic, book 4, and discusses Plato's analogy between the ideal city and the human soul. Both the city and the soul turn out to have three main parts, each of which has its proper function.

You're very welcome
Heyy
I appreciate the last sentiment -- but I don't really do fake laughs
very interesting, reminds me of the teachings of Gurdjieff and his three drives of the enneagram. It is also come to my knowledge that Plato was "initiated" in esoteric teachings. Most of his work goes back to Parmenides someone told me (don't know it that is so) but it makes the pieces of the puzzle more interesting :-)
I wouldn't read any of that in. And, it's not the case that most of Plato's work goes back to Parmenides
That's an interesting question -- can a vice ever get so bad that it basically kills or decomposes the soul itself? I would say that the answer for Plato seems to be No -- though it can get pretty, pretty bad! There's always a soul in existence, so there'd still be a vice as well, but some people are so incorrigable (in the Phaedo) in their vices that they get sent to Tarterus, and never get back out.
the students are all caought up in the traffic light and stupid drivers and the the teacher is like yeah yeah yeah fake laugh fake laugh lets get on with the class.... i wish i had this guy as my teacher just buisness and no bs
yeah seriously what is up with this class lol - they all seem really annoying

new Core Concept video
I assume everyone in the comments section was a completely attentive learner who was never once distracted in college.
Anyway, another great video Professor Sadler.
Some people just like to complain, I think. Fortunately, they're in the minority
according to plato how education can be a means of liberation?
How can shopping take a whole day? It takes me about twenty minutes to walk to the supermarket, about twenty minutes to buy my grocery's, and twenty minutes to walk home again. That is about an hour.
So what?
But what are the similarities or differences between justice of the individual and that of the city? Couldn't pick that up
The one maps on to the other. Watch it again, or if you like, read the actual text. . .
They are very much related
Plato explains this to show that the just city is composed of just individuals.
I just find it funny everyone is hating on the students in comments...like these are the weirdest hate comments I've read
Yep. RUclips is good for that
Ah... the problem with teaching undergrads.
Which one of the many did you have in mind?
Gregory B. Sadler the main one is that they often don’t read their assignments :P
