  • Episode 5 of my SOBO thru hike of the Pacific Crest Trail takes me through 98 miles of Washington wilderness! We hike together from Snoqualmie Pass to White Pass. I try to avoid norovirus and get to see many stunning views of Mount Rainier!
    A heat wave hits and I have to figure out how to stay hydrated, while avoiding the water sources with potential norovirus contamination. It proves to be challenging!
    This section really tested me and I'm feeling stronger than ever going into the next one.
    I really hope you enjoy this section of my hike! Thanks for being here!

    Thank you for also sharing the less appealing moments with us. It's so impressive how you face all these challenges, overcome your own fears, the pain and frustration whilst still appreciating every single bit of beauty around you and focus on the good things. You are a really brave woman Krysta, with the heart of a true explorer. You got all of my respect and amiration. ❤

    Nice videos. Norovirus is easily killed by the water tabs. The real thing to worry about is touching commonly touched surfaces in shelters and public bathrooms. Just wash your hands a lot in areas you’re worried about infection.

    • @KrystaNorwick
      @KrystaNorwick  3 месяца назад

      That’s great to hear about the water tabs! I didn’t have any with me, but a good idea to have some as a backup. I avoided all common surfaces, like the cabin, completely for that exact reason! Not worth the risk!

    What a difficult segment! This is a really good example of how to overcome heat and hydration issues. I also love the idea of the paper maps with the handwritten notes. They will be fantastic mementos in the future.

      I agree! It will be fun to look back on them :). It really was a difficult segment! It reminded me a lot of the hot section on the CLDT!

      I agree on the maps. I have saved the maps from several longer backpacking trips and they are really good ways to remember where you camped, the terrain you had on each day, etc. Even a decade later, looking at a map can really put me back into a trip and call back a lot of the memories.

    I live 20 miles west of White Pass (Packwood) so you were able to see the amazing area I get to train for my 2025 PCT! I always think it’s funny when I watch people’s videos because I feel like we really get to know that person, but yet they don’t know anything about the people watching them.

    You really gutted it out on this section -- it must have been really stressful trying to dodge contaminated water sources while dealing with 90-degree heat. Still, the views of Mt. Rainier were epic. Speaking of epic, I can't wait to see the next episode with Goat Rocks! BTW/I really like how good you are with narrating where you are and what we are seeing. I am into geography when I hike, so the use of maps, connecting them with the visuals in the video, is really cool and helpful. Washington looks amazing.

      Oh wow! I’m glad you were able to get out safely! Yes it was definitely very challenging weather conditions! I had a lot of practice hiking in really hot weather when I did the Croatian Long Distance Trail in 2022, so I think that helped me know what to expect and how my body responds.

    You are cranking out some serious mileage young lady- I would say maybe a little too ambitious, but then again maybe you are a serious athletic type yo, but really, wow just saying- we understand if you need an easy or maybe even a zero day here and there. Impressed at how well you’re doing. Hoping the weather will be ok- just heard California got some serious snow. Best of luck to you- 😊and also to your husband!🏃‍♀️🌿🧘🏼🙏

    Hiking through burn areas is hard and not having views for rewards is tough. It's so good you were able to get to have a shower at the end of a hard section. That was the reward you needed after that.

    Don't stress about not waking early. I did the PCT 2022, only woke up naturally, usually only hiking by 8am. I still averaged 40km per day. There's PLENTY of day light, so don't worry☺️ sleep is crucial, enjoy it!

      Yay! So glad!! Yes the hot and boring sections definitely are rare on the PCT. I think it’s really good seeing the variability and getting to experience it. Gives me lots of time to think and lots of time to listen to podcasts! I think it was on this section I thought of like 3 different book ideas haha!

    I love your style of video. Well done on this section, it seemed really tough. Wondering if water treatment tabs kill noro? Might be worth packing a few in your first aid back as back up to the filter.

    • @KrystaNorwick

    So awful that you had to hike during the heat of one of our climate change summers. You are probably seeing Mt Adams in the distance (2nd tallest mountain in WA). The toad is a Western Toad. Yes--seems like there is always a debate among PCT hikers of which is more awesome Goat Rocks or North Cascades.

    • @KrystaNorwick
      @KrystaNorwick  3 месяца назад

      Okay great thanks for the insights! Love the toad!! I think I'm biased towards North Cascades, but only because the wildflowers were blooming more strongly when I was there.
