  • This week we're touring another sailboat that's on the opposite end of the spectrum of what we normally look at, but in a different way this time. This is an Outremer 45, which is the same boat model as the famous La Vagabonde.
We're not touring it simply because it's famous, but because recently we've become very interested in performance cruising catamarans. The reason for this is because they just work better as platforms for electric boats. They have a lot to offer including but not limited to better sailing performance, lighter displacements (but still just as strong), more efficent hulls, more living space, and more room for equipment related to cruising.
Buying a complete performance cruising is a long way from possible for us in the near future, but we've pretty much decided we're going to DIY our own performance cruising catamaran from scratch, starting a year or two from now. Yes it will be expensive. Yes it will take a long time. Yes, we will film it ALL.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

Very cool to see this Outremer. It hard to believe that a boat like this, made for fast passages, can be made to be comfortable.
Building a Cat sounds like a great adventure but as Nick (Ruby Rose) said when with the Wynns - You shouldn't plan for a "forever boat" - you should look at a bout that will meet your needs for the next 5 years.
Thank you for another fantastic video :)

Yep ... as a loonnnng time "Multihuller" .... there is nothing like "boat speed" ... the "zoom" factor of doing +20knts is ... Awesome!!!! The neat thing is the "hissing" of the water on the hulls as they cut through the water ... then there is the "humming" ... like a swarm of angry bees ... (from the boards). As we say ...." We sail flat ... and we sail fast!!!" ( ... also makes cooking much easier when sailing too ...)

Thanks for the videos, I grew up sailing monos but at twenty I discovered Catamarans and it profoundly changed the way I like to sail. I only sail catamarans with boards because of speed and safety. You can anchor in shallow areas where skeg cats can't enter. Board cats go upwind almost as well as monos but you arrive days or weeks ahead of mono hulls. More room, less draft and in my humble opinion much safer if you respect the ocean. Keep the videos coming please.

Nice review guys, the Outremer 45 is a world class boat but has some issues, Elayna and Riley did a whole video on stuff that had to be repaired on The Vagabonde, we actually raced against them last year, the Outremer 45 is fast, but it was no match for our Privilege 615, Before you guys even start to build a cat, maybe look around for one that is a salvage boat, there are quite a few in the Florida Keys up for sale, and some are not that bad off that you could pick up at a decent price, there are a few at Indian Town Marina on the hard that are up for sale, and the best place to get one is a real good price is Green Cove Springs Marina just south of Jacksonville, Florida.........

I'm also following another sailing channel, sorry. They are sailing an Outremer 51 around the world. It is a pretty impressive boat and pretty quick. Not quick like an AC75 with foils, but still quick and very stable. Finance it, travel around the world and then sell it on your return. Then move up to a Gunboat. Hmmm

  • @ApprenticeGM
    @ApprenticeGM 5 лет назад

If you guys are serious about building a performance bluewater cruising catamaran, put Schionning on top of your list. They are rocket ships that will eat an Outremer for breakfast, simply no comparison for sailing speed. That speed also equals much greater safety as you can detour or outrun a storm, choose to reef deeper & earlier on passage yet still maintain excellent VMG / SOG which in turn reduces tipping potential, and run lower aspect ratio rigs in general further reducing tipping leverage. You end up with cat stability unparalleled yet performance the envy of all others. They have great versatility for layout to suit your preferences, and as you are self-building can fitout the boat for your budget and preferences. They are amazingly light and strong built in durakore and duraflex composite strips & panels with epoxy / glass / carbon skins and re-inforcements. They don't seem to have much recognition in North America but are well known and admired Down Under where a lot of self-build catamarans are constructed (due to costs of importing and dis-satisfaction with poor performance from major production cats) and many regard our catamaran construction and design technology as world-leading.
Whatever boat design you end up building, strongly recommend you go with balsa core / glass or carbon / epoxy method - the foam / glass / epoxy is significantly inferior in most aspects but seems to have popularity on the basis that some 1980's poorly-built balsa core boats soak water whereas foam does not; whatever you build must be built well / properly so you may as well go with the best construction method to achieve superior weight, strength & stiffness outcomes. Composites do take a bit longer to build than some methods but what a return on some extra hours.
Some other ideas to consider - daggerboards a must imho to improve windward progress & reduce draft, also reduces rudder strain at speed, go a single diesel genset and electric motors with a large battery bank & no engines (save weight & maintenance), make your own carbon wing mast, use dyneema rigging not stainless steel cable except the front mainstay for furling genaker.
Good luck with your project, look forward to watching you build & document.

Long trampolines area is for reducing chance of capsize when on fast speeds and on beam reach especially and with large swells. (Also weight aft mostly ). What happens on fast speeds and going over a wave on beam reach is that on top of wave specially the wind will catch boat from beneath as one ama goes air lifted. Large trampolines or not solid areas let the wind from beneath to go thru and not help capzising boat. Wonderful cat for light trades .

I built a 33 foot gaff schooner in the 80's and 90's. I would not recommend the practice. Yes, it was fun, yes the boat was great. The true problem is: you have no idea how much time, money, and energy such a project extols. And, here is the truth: you cannot walk away halfway through, when you most desperately want to - there is simply too much invested. You can't sell a half-built boat for anywhere near its true value. You'd get a 'scrapping' price for it. Buy something, improve it, sail it, sell it, and do it again, until you are aboard the ship you want to keep.

Maybe you could mention your opinion on build quality & fit and finish. Also how weight sensitive the boat is. 👍

Do the rudders kick-up for going dry on the beach. And is the hull bottom reinforced enough to go dry on the sand.

Great video. I really enjoyed it. I did note that you failed to mention the biggest safety issue with cats vs monohulls. That is capsize risk in very heavy seas. Monohulls, if designed properly will self right themselves if hit broadside by a huge wave while cats do not. That’s why the escape hatches were placed under the stairs below deck on this boat. In the unlikely event the catamaran is capsized the stairs drop and facilitate access to the escape hatch. I must admit this looks like a very well designed cat.
    Thanks for the video.

Yes you are correct that there is always a risk of capsize with a cat. There's also always a risk of a monohull losing it's keel or rudder, taking on water and sinking. Both designs have unique risks really. Safety really comes down to the skipper, the quality of the design, build of the yacht, the weather, and how well prepared the boat is.

      Learning the Lines
True true. I agree. But in terms of blue water boats, an overbuilt monohull vs an overbuilt cat, regarding safety I will go with a full keel, skeg rudder monohull. Those keels NEVER FALL OFF. But they are heavy and slow. That said with a cat it’s always argued that a cat can outrun the storm.
Of course to your point concerning the skipper, you are of course correct. It’s up to the captain off the vessel to know its strengths and limitations and adapt accordingly.

I strongly agree, in both scenarios.

This 45 OUTREMER is also light weight with a displacement around 10t. which, with speed, participate to safety.
For comparison, the lightest version of a Lagoon 45 (450S) is at 15t. of displacement.

If youre seriously going to build a catamaran then i will share something.
In australia they have kit boats that a 47 foot cat ships in a 40 foot container. All meterials needed to build the complete boat are in the container. The boat fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.
I met a guy who built one in 2 years just he and his son. It was beautifull and i was totally impressed. The kit will take years off building youre dream boat
    The boat designer is shionning.
Google it you will be impressed with the web site The kits are pre cut full length fiberglass balsa core composits. Put together like a jigsaw.
Full support from shionning as you build?
I am not anything to do with this company. But i have seen 3 of his cruising cats. They all were impressive.
    Give it a look.
If i were to build a cat i would do this type of build.

I really like the Outremer line, especially the most recent decade of boats designed by Barreau/Neumann. But they are very pricey, even if used. The Danson era boats (older pre-2009??) are nice also and much more affordable but they aren't as spacious/livable. With any of these high-performance cruisers (Outremer, Schionning, Chris White, Dazcat, HH), keeping the weight off the boat and especially out of the ends is critical.
Have you ever noticed that the Vagabond crew is regularly low on food supplies? They make a big effort to take as little weight as possible and don't even have a washer. I want to go fast and have a great time sailing a responsive boat but I want my wife to sail with me. If I give up too many creature comforts for speeds sake, it won't be as fun for her so it won't be as fun for me... (Well, maybe it'll still be fun for me!!).
Damn boats are always loaded with compromises...

Do your research before committing to a HUGE project like a boat build. I built a 31' tri (F-9A Farrier design) in the 90's. It's a great design with great plans and great technics refined by Farrier. Still it was way more work than I initially thought it would be (triple the time and double the money). I was very happy to finish it in 2 years because any longer would have become brutal (I also had a 50 hour/week job throughout the project).
There are alot of unfinished boat hulls out there where the builder ran out of money or steam. Often it takes so long that boat technology or materials have improved (especially true for multihulls) or the builder has gotten age, health, marriage or money problems.
Do some serious soul searching before you start. Boat building will test you like few other things in life. And don't expect to end up with the perfect boat because it does not exist. Resale on homebuilt is typically not as good because results vary so widely.
On the other hand, it will be a great source of pride and you would know the boat inside and out. You could also do things that factories cannot. I built with 100% Carbon Fiber skins and raised the deck slightly to accommodate my height.

the Schionning boat is by Craig Schionning (he is related to Jeff Schionning) a Spirited 470--look at Roam on RUclips. An amazing boat that comes in a kit , sails beautifully and is about a 5000 hour build--but expect to pay at least $400000k by the end of it. I built a Pescott 11.7--had professionals build the hulls to lock up stage and I did the interior--it is a huge job and not cheap. And, you never get your money back

If you are planning on building your own, after the hull is complete, you are only about 20% done.....
Then, there is the years of dealing with all sorts of toxic materials. And the space and logistics required to launch.
There are a lot of boat projects out there, in various stages of completion, most project owners either ran out of money, or died during the process....
Then by the time the vessel is finished, will you be healthy enough to enjoy it???
    Good Luck and Fair Winds!!

Keep reading, keep asking. I think you will find that building a production quality offshore boat, of any kind, will eat two to five years of your lives AND money. Ask MJ Sailing how long their refit consumed. Ask Uma how long they've been at it. And those are just refits.
And when you ready to move on, you'll be lucky to get back 25c on the dollar.
Better to buy a compromise boat and GO, unless you want to start a boatyard, building and flipping boats?

I think part of the difference with us and other channels is we don't want or need to be cruising full time indefinitely. We want a home base. We want to build things, but we also want to cruise. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. It can be work on a catamaran 6 months out of the year, and cruise six months out of the year on Freebie, for example. Vlogs would be a variety of everything boat related we do.

How much to air con the boat?. And will ask again. Why no approx price of boat?. Houses are priced, cars, cars, food, clothes etc. Are boats a big secret price? i.e. negotiable?.

Cruising cats just have a different feel than a mono. The heal of the boat when going to wind can be quite addicting. There are also performance oriented cruising monohulls capable of cat like speed. Check out Steve Dashews Beowolf series.

    Now you're thinking kiddo's!
The key to doing your own boat is the hull;very time consuming and very expensive to do.Find an older 'death bed' boat and meticulously check out the hull [moisture content, core layup.free floating catalyst %] and buy cheap.Strip out everything and you have your hull.I bought a 44 footer for 4 grand to get my hull as apposed to 35 grand for lofting, mold building and layup [a two year process]. From there you should concentrate on creative resource procurement,re-purposing,and refurbishing. If you do it right ,building your own boat will be fun, rewarding, and an education by Fire LOL.
