The traditional instruments have a way of making you long for something familiar but seemingly lost. Some sort of wide open spaces, some feeling of a time and place that your heart remembers, even though your mind can't recall it. And so his voice does the same. It puts a human face on that feeling, and guides us through the landscape of emotions alongside him.
The song is a song of loss and longing in the face of events one can't control. It's about leaving your homeland, knowing you may never see it again.
You can hear the marching cadence in the song.

You are spot on with your comments! You are supposed to hear sound of nature in this song - water, animals, wind. You can totally feel all these elements with this music. Dimash presents us with an immersive experience. Thank you for your reaction.

  • @Kirkunik1

It’s not just the instruments. Dimash’s voice is the primary instrument. He sings straight to the soul. Beauty, strength, grace, passion.
The song is the passions of a young Kazakh being called to leave his homeland to go fight in the war. Not knowing if he will ever see it again. You can hear the wolves, the wind and water recalled from these instruments. The beauty of the land and his people. It’s the tragic time before Kazakhstan received their independence from Russia. Dimash loves his homeland as well. His new video expresses that quite poignantly. He wanted to make an album of traditional songs right away.
I adore the beautiful artistry and music of its culture. Dimash comes from lovely kind talented people. They are jewel. And Dimash is the sweetest pear.
Thanks for your heartfelt reaction. Hope you will do more.
    Greetings from the USA 🇺🇸

I cannot state how much I love Samaltau. In fact I often lose track of which reaction videos I've already watched. I've watched so many. It is a profoundly spiritual experience when he sings. I am very serious. The song is very sad. Written by a young man trudging toward a war that isn't his. Leaving behind his home, the stepps, the animals, the night sky. Leaving behind his elderly parents to their fates, and marching toward his own. Haunting.

Oh my... i had missed this song... Dimash... he is not only a master vocalist, he is also an artiste that knows how to perform and capture his audince. He is also incredibly charming and handsome snd with his voice this becomes magic. His voice penetrates you, makes love to you, make every atom in your body shiver and tremble. It opens every barrier you ever had and you cant stop it.. If I was a believer I would say its a gift from the Gods...I am not a concert-goer but I would pay through my nose to see him live.

Great reaction Derek, thank you. He was invited to perform at this years Tokyo Jazz Festival but due to the pandemic it was first cancelled (and he was very disappointed) then it was done as an online concert on Dimash's 26th birthday on May 24th 2020. So he took part by performing 2 songs, Samaltau and S.O.S which he live streamed from his home in Astana Kazakhstan, this is his music room/studio in his house. The instruments are a Kobyz, the stringed instrument a bit like a viola, it has two strings of horse hair and has a 5,000 year history, its played here emulating the sounds of the Kazakh steppe, the wolves, cattle, Cranes flying south and other wild animals. The flute is called a Sybyzgy and is emulating the Kazach Golden Eagle and other birds, the rainstick (bamboo filled with gravel or rice) is emulating the wind in the grass of the steppe, plus the water running off from the Samal mountain. The instruments on the wall are Dimash's collection of various Dombra, plus a shaman drum and a jetigen, a Kazakh zither, all gifts from Dears. I absolutely love this song, I first heard it at the Silk Road Film Festival last year and it stunned me. Here he is performing this powerful song sitting cross legged on a piano stool, he always makes it look so easy when in reality this is a difficult song to sing this well. Bravo Dimash 🌺🌹🌺🌹🌺
Here is the full story of what this terribly sad song is about. Dimash sings from the perspective of a 28 year old soldier who is thinking of his aging parents, his home country and the sacred mountain Samal Tau^ www.iias.asia/the-newsletter/ajíjticle/time-ordeal-story-1916-revolt-central-asia
( BTW the link on Fandom says nothing found, but try here

Its not Dimash's fan page just to be clear 💖)

At the beginning of the song, the sounds of the Great Steppe of Kazakhstan at night were masterfully imitated on the Kazakh ancient folk instrument KOBYZ. We hear howl wolves, barking dogs, the cries of cranes, the noise of water in the river... /// The song "Samal Tau" is considered folk. Its plot is connected with the events of 1916. That year, many men were mobilized for World War I, which was in Europe. /// The guy walks along the steppe road at night and sings a song about having left his native home and old parents, native mountains "Samal Tau". The guy doesn't know what lies ahead in the war. He doesn't know if he'll return from the war to his home. /// Dimash sings this song in Kazakh. The song premiered on October 20, 2019 in China at the closing of the 6th Silk Road International Film Festival ruclips.net/video/1NkoFc-bQ_s/видео.html

Hey, congrats! You're, I think, the first one that gets actually the song's feeling. It is a longing and sad song. Since it's in his mother tongue and we don't know the lyrics, many people say how peaceful it is or how happy and meditative they feel. But it is instead a sad song... I was starting to write what the song is about but then you started reading. Love your reaction, kiddo. Cheers!

I love this „reduced“ to the essential version of this song. Nothing distracting. Just Dimash and his voice with the instrumentation carries you away into another world. I appreciate that you took the time to get background informations to this song and that you attached the link. It would be top notch to attach the original video link. You know yourself how important it is that people come to your channel and for an artist like Dimash especially during the pandemic it is even more important.

Dereck, it is worth listening to an earlier version Dimash sang in concert with some background. The song was from 1916 or 1917 just at the end of WWI and just before the communist revolution, recording the longings for home of those drafted by the Czar to go off to war.
