Jai Bhim and Indian Constitution: Perspectives on Dr. Ambedkar’s Vision

  • The webinar discussed Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s conception of social justice with reference to constitution and the legal system. Speakers in the webinar and the topics dealt with were: Thiru T J Gnanavel, Writer and Director, Jai Bhim on on " Inspiration in Making of Jai Bhim and its Contemporary Relevance"; Dr Nissim Mannathukkaren, Associate Professor, International Development Studies, Dalhousie University, Canada;on "Annihilation of Caste and Public Culture"; and Dr Kalpana Kannabiran, Distinguished Professor, Council for Social Development, India; on “Citizenship, Public Dialogue and the Constitution”.
    In the context of the movie Jai Bhim, the webinar discussed how art and cinema could be used to improve the awareness of people about the inadequacies of the current system of dispensation of social justice and how they could be improved. Speakers dealt on how caste could be annihilated, the need for assertion of rights of citizens vis-a-vis recent focus on citizen’s duties, and the need for continued affirmative action to ensure social justice.
    Unfortunately, owing to some technical glitch the live session could not be recorded on RUclips fully. Anek Dhara expresses profuse apologies to the speakers and the audience for this glitch. To remedy the situation we edited the video to minimise the discontinuities and presented it in a shorter version.
