  • Two brothers named Simon and Andrew were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. One day, Jesus Christ saw them casting their nets into the sea.
“Follow me,” he told them, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
The immediately left their nets and followed him.
Jesus walked on and found two other brothers, James and John. They were fishermen, too. He called them as well. They too left everything and followed Jesus.
What is the meaning of this calling to be “Fishers of Men”?
The gospels make it clear that the first disciples were not expert theologians and elite leaders. They were ordinary men doing ordinary jobs. These first disciples were fishermen.
Instead of calling these disciples to become something they were not, he called them to be who they already were but in service of him.
They were fishermen, but Jesus called them to be fishers of men, fishers of people.
So, Simon (later Peter), Andrew, James, John, and the rest of the Apostles were sent out to catch people for Christ. This is not to enslave them or catch them against their will. That takes the analogy too far. Instead, it is the goal of the disciple to go out and cast nets with faith in God that he will provide people to join them.
    In Summary:
The first disciples embraced their identity in service to the Lord rather than trying to become someone new.
The first disciples were not among the wise and learned leaders of the time.
All disciples are called to catch people for Christ.
