  • Some med school applicants waste a lot of money applying to out-of-state public medical schools that have basically no likelihood of accepting them. So today, let's discuss what kind of ties you should have to an out-of-state public medical school in order to be a strong applicant there.
As always on the OldPreMeds Podcast, our question this week is taken from our nontraditional premed forum. Ask your own questions at premedforums.com.
For an app that is changing the premed landscape, especially for nontrads, check out Mappd at mappd.com.
Our student this week asks the best way to narrow down locations on their list of medical schools they're applying to. This student has ties in Colorado and Florida. Does your state residence matter for med school apps? How can you show your strong ties to the states you're not a legal resident of?
In my answer, I touch on:
    • Public medical schools vs private medical schools and how many out-of-state applicants they typically accept.
    • What constitutes a strong tie to a state? Having family connections in the area? Having taken a vacation in the area before? Having grown up in that area?
    • The rules for Texas medical schools accepting max 10% out-of-state students.
    • Does a high MCAT score help your chances as an out-of-state applicant to med school?
    • Communicating your ties to an area in secondary essays and on your application.

The University of Kentucky is my dream med school! I have INCREDIBLY strong ties to the school and state as an out of state applicant. It's great to hear that they give that consideration

Omg same! I have a bachelors in Marketing from the University of Kentucky and have recently decided to get my post-bacc classes for Med School prerequisites. I love the whole UK atmosphere and I don’t want to leave the state. Hopefully we both get in! Best wishes!

Excited to watch this! I went to UC San Diego and still do research for a lab there, but am a Colorado resident now. I’m stressed this will impact my chances of getting back into a California school even though I lived there longer than anywhere else.

What should we look for in medical schools to tell if they have a good program? I have a competitive application I believe but I don’t want to end up wasting it by applying to a medical school with a meh program. Thank you for your time in helping me with this!

I'm an international student but I've lived in Cali for 13 years. All the schools I've applied to don't count me as a resident anywhere :)

Hello Dr. Grey, is it possible for you to do a video on International students who have done undergrad in the States? Thank you.

I’m a NY resident, will I have a lower chance of acceptance at a state school in NJ even though it is only a 40 min train ride ?

I’ve lived half my life in Iowa and my siblings and grandparents are in Iowa and I spent half my life in Nebraska and my parents are in Nebraska and I’m currently in Nebraska, so I could do both. I shouldn’t apply to California schools just because I like the weather. Plus I can live with family during school

What if you don’t have a strong tie, but wanted to apply to experience living in a different part of the country? I am from MA, but I have lived in New England my whole life and wanted to experience living somewhere else. Can’t medical schools understand that? I have traveled to many of the states I applied to for brief vacations, but that’s it as far as “ties” go. I also wanted to apply to a broad area, and to both public and private schools to increase my chances.

I'm in the same boat and told the interviewers that on my interview day. Got accepted so it's not a bad idea!

Well medical schools want to train doctors that will work and contribute to THEIR state, not for you to just go there, say psyche, and dip to another state. That is the rationale for the "strong ties"

What should do a student who comes to United States at the age of 19, and it is a Rhode Island Resident, RI just have 1 MD school Brown where I should apply?

You can consider applying to private medical schools, then in out of state is not that much of a concern

Are strong tie applicants looked as the same as a resident applicants

    • @Jes1919

Depends on where you want to apply. Some schools for example , University of Washington only accept in state, and region students.

So does this mean as a CA resident that I can get into Stanford med with a fairly less than average MCAT score?

Stanford is private though. They don’t go by the same rules as public schools.
