John P. Kee - The Man Who Changed Gospel Music

  • John P. Kee doesn't always get his just due as the father of modern gospel music. He built on the legacy of pioneers like James Cleveland, Edwin and Walter Hawkins and Andrae Crouch, and leveled-up that innovation for a new era. He ushered in 90's choir music with an energetic sound and look that hearkened back to the innovative spirit of his predecessors.
Suddenly, choirs were cool again. Groups like Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ, Ricky Dillard and New G and Kirk Franklin and the Family soon followed, and presented their own version of this sleeker, streetwise ensemble. The golden age of gospel choirs was celebrated in film as well, with movies like Sister Act II, The Preacher's Wife and The Fighting Temptations.
This golden era would not have existed without the trailblazing efforts of Rev. John P. Kee. In this Breakdown, I'm taking a look at his circuitous route to become the modern-day crown price of Gospel music.

John P Kee is the only "Gospel" artist that I remember giving out money to the audience on all of his concerts!! No one else I remember doing that in the 80's and 90's

Yes he blessed me back in 1997 and then took us to play basketball and ride on his tour bus. He had and is still 100% genuine. They had just went fishing and the bus smell like fish bus somebody forgot to get all the coolers of fish off the bus. I’ll never forget that experience. After that I got to tour with him ministering for the next 3years. I learned how to operate within ministry and most importantly how to love and commit to God

Thank you so much for this documentary of Pastor John P. Kee He is definitely unsung And I don’t know why😮, in the 90s, he was a pioneer Christian music my generation that I could relate as a young believer before Kirk Franklin there was John P. Kee 💯☺️ John definitely needs to be recognized. He paved way for these younger artist and I don’t understand why he’s not recognized for his achievement. He worked 95 at all these big churches is there up and down the highway and selling his tapes his merchandise he was definitely a trailblazers, we definitely celebrated for bringing the word of God to so many people in that generation💯☺️💕,

Thanks for adding your thorough insight. That PBS documentary was so disappointing. I must say him "changing" gospel is a stretch, but he did add a good amount of season to what was a very crowded progressing artist field of the times. Good documentary you've assembled. It was indeed a blessing he would give out money to the most elder saints at any given musical. Shout out to San Antonio, where he frequently visited and performed. Shout out to the Legendary Edwin Hawkins bringing him to the fore on many 80s M&A seminars.

I think John P. Kee had a big hand in changing the sound of choir & ensemble gospel music, but as much as I love John (and I played with him in the early 200s after Hurricane Katrina/Rita), I think Fred Hammond & Commissioned had a larger hand in changing the sound of gospel music. Even though they were from Detroit, Commissioned had almost a New Jack swing sound that seemed to be copied by artists in New York & Philadelphia around the mid-80s. Fred broke away from Commissioned around 1991 when he wanted to start a new ministry sound called praise & worship, which Commissioned wasn't interested in at the time, leading to division and breakup of the group at the time. However, Fred did not introduce his choir until around 1994-1995. That being said, I see Fred as the father of praise & worship music, and John as the rebirth of choir & ensemble music.
