I experienced this while camping in the Sonoran desert. They call to each other over pretty long distances. It can feel like you're surrounded and be a bit unnerving, if you're not used to it. You learn to enjoy the free concert.

Another vote for the outdoor vitals stretch pillow! I got it free with an order or else I probably wouldn't have scraped up the money but it's well worth it. It's slightly lighter and doesn't move around as much as an off-brand one I had previously got from Amazon. I also use a buff over it for easy cleaning.

First let me say I camp 90% in a hammock now! Back in the day I used my sleeping bag sack and filled it with clothes and tent bags, I was young and thought it was macho not taking a silly pillow. I now own three camp pillows, Sierra Madre Research Pufflo older version (two parts in one) inflatable inner chamber and an outer soft insulation, the Nemo Fillo pillow (similar to the Pufflo) and a Wise Owl Medium Camp Pillow (similar to a regular home pillow with 100% polyester fill). All three are close in size with the Pufflo the largest and thickness, but it is the softest and most luxurious of the three. Your head actually falls into this cloud with ease, and the insulation keeps in quiet compared to the pool float noice of air pillows. My personal preference is Pufflo, then the Wise Owl and last the Nemo. But I could not use the Wise Owl type in my hammock, neck break! All 3 Pack down about the same, but the Nemo is the smallest and lightest by 2 ozs. But the Pufflo can be compressed a lot more, Winter camping, I put the pufflo, extra clothes and my quilts in a light compression sack to ensure I have plenty of room for the additional winter gear. Good luck buddy!

The forest that you visited something remotely reminds some types of forests in Russia. In October or November there is about the same. There are no snow yet, but there are no leaves on the trees. Coyote is certainly no, these animals are missing from us, but once I have ever heard a cry of lynx. The sound of her cry awesome. Terribly at night in the forest to hear such sounds. I was pleased that you are allowed to arrange a fire. I know that in England and other European countries, as well as in South Korea, it is often prohibited. In Russia, they are also trying to ban fires, but it is technically difficult to implement. Territory is too huge and many wild places. Nevertheless, a fine from this year is about 100 dollars. And the journey without a fire does not bring pleasure at all. As a pillow, we most often use packaging from sleeping bags filled with clothing. Also, part of the clothes can be placed under a sleeping bag. Alcohol burners are not much distributed. More often use gas, sometimes gasoline. There is a stereotype that the alcohol is sinful to burn, as it is used as a drink. Personally, I do not drink alcohol, but this phenomenon in Russia is really common widespread. This is a serious problem, unfortunately. Many do not pose fishing or visiting the forest without alcohol. Therefore, bottles of vodka and beer are often located in the wildest places.

Pillow: Sea To Summit small if your a back sleeper. Large if your a side sleeper. Felt on one side is very comfy. They both deflate down to a package smaller than a tennis ball, like the size of a racquet ball and about 2oz. Sometimes it's nice to have a "known" spot to camp at. Less pressure to find camp more time to relax. Allegheny national forest is good for coyotes too. Sounds like you're due for an exhaust overhaul.

Best budget pillow - Trekology ALUFT 2.0. I also love the Nemo Fillo Elite. There's also a luxury version so depending on how much weight you're looking to carry, you can get something with a better pillow feel. The most "normal" pillow is the Thermarest compressible but it's quite large pack wise.

I used a Hammock Gear Pillow which is great for hammock but not ground. I used the S2S Aeros for my Thru Hike both in the hammock, shelters, and hostels. However it leaked and I had to replace it. When the 2nd one failed, I went with the cheaper Trekology. Love it best of all. I let out a lot of air for hammock, but blow pretty full when in a shelter or tent. It is larger and more versatile plus softer than the Aeros. Still lighter than Dan Beckers bulky pillow! Love the Waist Pack!

I've used three pillows, Sea to Summit Aeros Deluxe, Outdoor Vitals pillow, and Trekology Aluft 2.0. I love all of them for different reasons, but I would say the Trekology is my favorite for the strap on the back that goes around the sleeping pad to keep it in place. It's also light and packs down really small, think soda can. The sea to summit one is really nice for colder trips because its got a felt case and keeps my head a bit warmer. The OV one is really nice for hammock camping since its so light and is really comfortable when partially inflated.

Sometimes at the end of a day (at home) I could have 2 or 3 rubber bands on my wrist, but if I find something open, there they are. Rubber band tip back atcha. Hey Bryce. Thanks for taking us along! When I worked in New Mexico for the Forest Service, the locals would call that a white man fire. Too big to stay close to stay warm. Have you ever considered a small twig stove or even a medium sized twig stove. Maybe a firebox or the nano. Emberlit original. You can use pretty much all twig stoves as pot stands for alcohol stoves. Just wondering. Tons more people are heading into our outside escapes and burning tons of firewood and not always putting them out all the way. A lot of the Canadian utuber canoers i follow are actually including LNT lessons in their vids. It’d be great if the newbolds, beckers and kyle hates backpacking folk would include LNT lessons. I’ve seen dogshit bags hanging in trees, ive dug up another’s shit with my boot and packed out lots o garbage. This pandemic has brought havoc to our wild places. Just a thought. ✌🏽

I ride off road motorcycle in NM and AZ, I always make small fires because I only have so much water and hate to waste it extinguishing a big fire.

No complaints about my Sea to Summit pillow. Hardly weighs a thing and it’s pretty comfortable.

Love the sound of Coyote in the night. Never been to the Marrietta district of Wayne. I'll have to check it out sometime.

I hated using my clothes as a pillow. It was miserable. I got a Trekology pillow and I like it. I'm also going to get a STS Areos down pillow.

Bryce when that hiker ran by you, I could hear him on video before seeing him. I thought what the hell was running through your camp. Your face was funny as shit! Very funny. One of these days I hope to run into you and the Schill Bros.

I tried the Outdoor vitals pillow, it just isn't thick enough for me, but if you don't need a thick pillow it is great.
I got a pillow off Amazon that is actually for a footrest for short people on airplanes. It's the same weight as the outdoor vital pillow, but cheaper and thicker..it's my forever backpacking pillow.
