    Clearly Marr was one of those kids who did nothing else after school, but play the guitar. He doesn't appear to be that kid who learned all the lead guitar licks of the 70s guitar heroes. Instead, he learned how to "write melodies," throw in the chords and write interesting "music," not leads. He and Peter Buck are my favorite guitar players of all-time. I have to say I did not care for much of what Marr did after The Smiths broke up. I just don't see that he found that "right mix" for a band that he did with The Smiths. Wahi' Valleys

    • @richardrouth4790
      @richardrouth4790 3 года назад +8

      I feel like he should have kept playing with Andy Rourke - their chemistry together is so incredible and while I give Marr the lions share of the credit because he wrote all this stuff, Rpurke’s basslines highlight and complement his playing so well. These songs were all created as great instrumentals and from there Morrissey probably couldn’t help but be brilliantly inspired. It seems like the songwriting process for Marr’s later projects was really different, he tried to fit in with other bandleaders instead of leading the way like with the Smiths. I don’t blame him given how the Smiths went, he took on too much responsibility during those years for it to be sustainable, but it was definitely his golden period as a songwriter.

    Most of the genius behind this lies in the rhythmic patterns. Tap out the second layer over the first and you can see what it does. The shapes over top are also very pretty

    It looks like Johnny's playing G (E shape), D, Am, C & D. I'm guessing he uses a capo on the 2nd fret on the Smiths recording.

    • @NickH81
      @NickH81 4 года назад +12

      7 years ago eh? Oh well it may enlighten someone... he tuned the guitar up a whole step on the recording, equivalent to a capo on 2nd fret but tonally different. Never tried it myself, scared of snapping strings. Capo works well enough.

      @@NickH81 Indeed. I was just watching the video of The Killers playing This Charming Man at Glastonbury where Marr joined them. He plays this with the capo on II. I can't begin to imagine how he got that high E string tuned up a full step without breaking it. It makes me cringe thinking about twisting that sucker...

      If you run lighter gauge strings e.g super slinky’s, it is relatively easy

    • @rafaelcabralwilliams
      @rafaelcabralwilliams 3 года назад +2

      @@Majerly_Annoyed shorter scale lenghts like gibson's 24.75'' les paul (which Johnny used at the time) allow you to achieve a whole step up tuning with 009 or 008 gauge strings. Jaguars are 24'' so it's quite easy to get that tuning, but i guess musicians don't do that anymore by fear of breaking the strings when beding them. The Chameleons used to tune in the same manner.
