We’re getting major magpie problems, we never had them and now they are always around, we think this has caused major illness in our dog as the vet thinks he has caught giardia (a test is yet to be made but that’s the suspicion our vet thinks). My dog has not been himself for a week and I really need to get rid of these damn birds if it turns out that they are responsible.

OH DARN! Poor pup :( The first thing is to get rid of anything they can possibly eat or drink. That's the first step for sure! Not sure if you feed your dog outside, but it's the first thing they will look for. If you feed other birds I would take that down too (temporarily) to speed up their departure.

@@habitatYEG garden is usually pretty clear though we have berry’s in a bit of land over our fence which the council has yet to give permission for us to cut down. We don’t really feed outside only the odd treat which always gets eaten by our dogs because... well they are treats 😂 no treat gets left behind with my dogs. We don’t feed birds as I was always worried bird feeders may drop some bird food that my dogs might eat. Our old neighbour used to have bird feeders but this was way before the magpie problem. Not sure if our new neighbours have any tho. They hang out a lot on a large tree and I’m wondering if they’ve nested up there but the tree is on someone else’s land.

@@tvshowedits2383 hmmm if they were nesting the babies would have fledged by now. Maybe hang all the cd's you can as close to that tree they are in as you can from your side of the fence. How are the neighbour's with garbage? Does it get busted into by the magpies?

Great information! About migration info too. I loved “Keep them guessing” Do the shining things scare the the songbirds? Does it take time for them to get used to them? It’s almost may here.
I’m going to get the “dead” crows or magpies. Ok to put them out now?
Since crows came into our neighborhood, bringing grackles-and the very worst, parasitic cowbirds-our songbirds have been declining. I have personally witnessed 3 parasitic invasions of cardinal nests for 3 seasons now. Heartbreaking! There is little to no singing from my backyard songbirds. I hear them in your video. I really miss them. I hear mostly the grating sounds of these awful birds. Thank you. I’ll try the shiny things and fake crows.

Yes! It's a total challenge game. You have to keep upping your creativity! The magpies were liking our new wildlife pond way too much. I put the decoy magpie out and move it to a different spot every day. The occasional super brave magpie comes through but it has really helped. It is legal here for trapping, not sure where you are but it is an option to get the situation kick started into control. Metallic "bird scare tape" does not scare my little birds at all, or Downy Woodpeckers but I haven't tested it on the bigger birds yet. The robins just built their nest so I am going to wait for eggs and then hang some cd's.

Thank you for your reply! I’m originally from Detroit and Windsor was my favorite place to be. I love Canada. But sadly I’m in Texas now and though killing cowbirds is legal, as far as crows, I’d really have to prove they were menaces to go that far. Wish I could though! I’m going to get the tape and hang some. I’m so glad it doesn’t scare the small birds.
I usually go outside and clap my hands at the crows and I wonder if I’ve scared some of the songbirds off. We don’t have magpies here but I am going to give the fake crows a try. For three years I’ve watched crows bring in other black birds. And some neighbors who don’t know or don’t care are feeding the crows. Sigh. But thank you for affirming the tape and cds and fake birds. I will try that right away. Your backyard is so lovely. What a peaceful habitat you’ve made. Thank you again for your help and for sharing your insights. 😊

Magpies and crows are very smart....decoys donothibg to deter them in my yard. I changed bird feeders and timing of feeding jays. I feed jays early in the day a limited amount of nuts in hidden spots.

Use monition sensor sprinkler it sprays the bird when activated...if you have bird feeders use smaller or wire feeders they can't fit on
